With Oscars Over, Hollywood Is Determined to Escape From Reality

7 March 2017 6:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

In the late 1990s, shortly before his death in August 2000, Sir Alec Guinness incurred the wrath of legions of Star Wars fans when he admitted he had concerns about the movie’s long-term impact.

“A refurbished Star Wars is on somewhere or everywhere,” he wrote in his memoir, A Positively Final Appearance. “I have no intention of revisiting any galaxy. I shrivel inside each time it is mentioned. Twenty years ago, when the film was first shown, it had a freshness, also a sense of moral good and fun. Then I began to be uneasy at the influence it might »

J.J. Abrams Believes Mark Hamill Could Win An Oscar For Star Wars: The Last Jedi

28 February 2017 8:02 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Fans spent pretty much every second of Star Wars: The Force Awakens waiting to see Luke Skywalker, but he was saved for the final few seconds of the film and didn’t say so much as a single word. Thankfully, he’ll return in Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December with a leading (speaking) role, but it sounds like the work the iconic actor will deliver is going to be even more impressive than any of us could have imagined.

During a speech given at the Oscar Wilde Awards, producer J.J. Abrams revealed that he believes Mark Hamill could win an Oscar for his performance as Luke in the highly anticipated release, which is directed by Rian Johnson.

“I think we are all going to be very upset if he does not win an Oscar, and no one more upset than Mark.”

J.J. Abrams Thinks Mark Hamill Will Win an Oscar for Star Wars 8

27 February 2017 11:38 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It may feel like a long way away, but in a sense, Star Wars 8 is just around the corner. There are a ton of reasons to be excited about the movie, but easily the biggest reason is getting to see Luke Skywalker in action, or at the very least actually saying a line or two of dialogue. As if we weren't already excited enough, J.J. Abrams has just further fueled the fired by saying that Mark Hamill's performance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is potentially Oscar-worthy.

The director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was recently in attendance at Oscar Wilde Awards in L.A., which is intended to support the U.S. Ireland Alliance. NY Daily News caught up with J.J. Abrams at the event and even though he isn't directing this time around, the subject of Star Wars: The Last Jedi came up. Here is »

Alien Star John Hurt Dies At 77

27 January 2017 6:35 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Alien star John Hurt has passed away today at the age of 77. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2015, but at this time we’re unsure if that was the cause of death. The actor is survived by Anwen Rees-Myers, his wife of 12 years, and his two sons, Alexander and Nicholas.

The British film legend was a beloved, Academy Award-nominated talent with an incredibly accomplished career spanning six decades. Notable credits include V For VendettaMidnight ExpressThe Elephant ManHarry PotterTinker Tailor Soldier Spy (a personal favorite of mine) and many, many more. So well recognized was Hurt that he even received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2014 for his tremendous work.

Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1940, he was the youngest of three children. Though he wasn’t allowed to see movies when he was younger, at the age of eight he was sent to »

Mark Hamill's Eyes Are Brightened With This Authentic Lightsaber

16 January 2017 1:32 PM, PST | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

I have a treat for you today! I must start this with the fact that I am fascinated with "Bearded Mark Hamill". As he has gotten older, he has become much more somber, his "Joker" voice has deepened, and he is a humble guy just glad to be where he is today. I think he likes the fact he can shoot more Star Wars films, and even moreso loves just how much the Star Wars fans damn near worship him. I am one of said fans, and I was so happy to see this new clip from Comic-Con HQ on an upcoming episode of Mark Hamill's Pop Culture Quest. You must check this out, and see his expression when he unveils his "gift" and realizes just what it is.

Greatness! Love it love it!

The interviewer did inject a nice little tidbit here, this was the same prop used by »

Mark Hamill Is Reunited with His Lightsaber from ‘Return of the Jedi’ — Watch

16 January 2017 11:55 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Between the election of Donald Trump and the passing of Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill has mostly been in the news for unhappy developments these last few months. He’s called the incoming administration a “who’s-who of really despicable people” and written an emotional tribute to his “Star Wars” sister, so it comes as a welcome reprieve to see him reunited with an old friend — even if it’s just a movie prop.

In an upcoming episode of “Mark Hamill’s Pop Culture Quest,” Luke Skywalker himself is shown a small suitcase and asked if he knows what it contains. Hamill has no idea, and so Alinger shows him: the original lightsaber he used in “Return of the Jedi,” which was also used by Sir Alec Guinness in “A New Hope.” Watch the clip below. »

Watch Mark Hamill Reunite with His Return of the Jedi Lightsaber

13 January 2017 3:21 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Collecting movie memorabilia has grown into a huge business, with fans eager to pay top dollar for some of the rarest movie props out there. One of the best places to find some of these rare props is a place known as Prop Store L.A., which is run by Brandon Alinger, who invited Star Wars icon Mark Hamill to visit his shop in a new episode of Pop Culture Quest, debuting on Comic-Con HQ Tuesday, January 17. A video has debuted that shows Brandon Alinger reuniting Mark Hamill with a very special prop from Return of the Jedi.

The clip, which comes courtesy of Geek Tyrant, shows Brandon Alinger pulling out a special prop from his personal collection, the real lightsaber Mark Hamill used in Return of the Jedi. Brandon Alinger also has quite a story behind the prop, revealing that this same lightsaber was used by Alec Guinness in »

‘Fargo’ Chapter 3: Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon on Dual Roles, the Accent and Those Character Names

12 January 2017 5:35 PM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

While “Fargo” Chapter 3 will blow “kisses” to past installments, expect a totally new story when Noah Hawley’s Coen-inspired series returns in April.

Stars Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, David Thewlis and Michael Stuhlbarg have only been shooting the third installment of FX’s Emmy-winning limited series for a week, but they, along with executive producer Warren Littlefield, still took the time to come by the TCA Winter Press Tour and reveal a little bit of information about what we can expect from this newest iteration.

Set in 2010, the show promises to take on issues like social media in the modern world, as Littlefield explained. (Hawley was scheduled to appear on the panel, but bowed out due to illness.) “Carrie has a scene where she’s on a plane and she looks around and everyone has their heads down,” he said. “No one’s talking, no one’s communicating. »

From Split to Psycho: why cinema fails dissociative identity disorder

12 January 2017 8:01 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

M Night Shyamalan’s new movie, Split, stars James McAvoy as a character with 23 different personalities. And, like most screen portrayals of the disorder, it is seen as dangerous and violent. But what’s the truth behind the stigma?

Tom Hanks played six different characters in Cloud Atlas, Eddie Murphy played seven in The Nutty Professor and Alec Guinness notched up eight in Kind Hearts and Coronets. But James McAvoy sets a new benchmark with his new movie, Split. He plays Kevin, a man with at least 23 distinct personalities – not all of them nice. This presents extra challenges for the young women Kevin has abducted and locked in his basement. Every time he walks into the cell, they have to work out who they are dealing with. Is it “Dennis”, the frowny, buttoned-up neat-freak? Is it “Patricia”, the prim, English-accented governess? Could it be “Hedwig”, the nine-year-old Kanye West fan? »

One Star Wars Star Warned George Lucas About Jar Jar Binks

11 January 2017 11:09 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

At this point, it is almost becoming needless to pile onto the hate parade that has been marching in the direction of the Star Wars prequels for more than a decade now. Disney is once again making quality Star Wars movies and hopefully, we can all move on from the prequel trilogy. Still, one of the worst elements of the prequels, Jar Jar Binks, is a thorn in the side of the epic saga that many fans can't quite shake. It turns out that actor Brian Blessed, who played Gungan leader Boss Nass in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, tried to warn George Lucas about Jar Jar during production.

YouTuber Jamie Stangroom has been tracking down some of the lesser known actors from the Star Wars universe across various movies, interviewing them on his YouTube channel. He recently had Brian Blessed on and the subject of Jar Jar Binks came up. »

Throwback Fyc: Carrie Fisher, 1977

4 January 2017 5:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

While the Star Wars franchise didn't become or stay a global phenomenon on the strength of its acting, it did received one Oscar nomination in that arena: Sir Alec Guiness as Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars (1977). Later Sir Ian McKellen would pull off a similar trick for the Lord of the Rings franchise proving that it really helps to be a knighted acclaimed male thespian to get respect for genre films.

But Star Wars's Oscar campaign in 1977 (which resulted in 10 nominations, 6 wins, and a special non-competitive Oscar) did include the then 21 year-old Carrie Fisher

It's insane that our beloved Carrie Fisher was never Oscar nominated but that insanity stems not from Star Wars, however iconic Leia is and will continue to be, but from her infinitely quotable and self-deprecatingly delicious screenplay to Postcards from the Edge  (1990). Her significantly reworked adaptation of her own novel put nearly all of »

Grab Some Tissues, Because Mark Hamill's Goodbye Letter to Carrie Fisher Will Make You a Blubbering Fool

3 January 2017 8:45 AM, PST | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Mark Hamill has much love for his Star Wars costar Carrie Fisher. While many celebrities were shocked by her death, the actor, who played her brother in the franchise, took the news especially hard. Aside from releasing a heartwarming statement about his "beloved space-twin," Hamill recently paid tribute to Fisher with a farewell letter in The Hollywood Reporter. "Carrie and I occupied a unique area in each other's lives," he wrote. "It was like we were in a garage band together that somehow hit it huge. We had no idea the impact Star Wars would have on the world. I remember we were out on tour right before the movie opened. By the time we got to Chicago, there was a crowd at the airport. I said, 'Hey look, you guys, there must be somebody famous on the plane.' I was looking around to see who it might be. »
