The Most Successful Ya Novel Movie Adaptations, Ranked

22 January 2016 11:20 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Even if you're not a big reader of young adult fiction, you may have seen the advertisements for the new Chloë Grace Moretz movie The 5th Wave and suspected that it looks like the kind of movie that was adapted from a Ya franchise. All the elements are there: a post-apocalyptic dystopia, a winsome female protagonist who stands up to become the world's champion, an imperiled younger sibling and the winning combination of light science fiction and teenaged angst. The 5th Wave is the first in a trilogy of books by Rick Yancey about a group of underage rebels fighting off an alien invasion. »

When to expect all the upcoming live action fairytale movies, including Dumbo, Beauty And The Beast and two Jungle Books…

You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films. (A whopping 21 by our count.)

Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success, »

Ride Along 2” and “The Revenant” will lead the U.S. box office again this weekend, fending off the sixth frame of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and a trio of newcomers.

Early forecasts have placed Universal’s “Ride Along 2” and Fox’s “The Revenant” at about $20 million each for the Friday-Sunday period with the seventh “Star Wars” movie in the $13 million to $15 million range. The openings of Lionsgate’s comedy “Dirty Grandpa,” Stx’s horror-thriller “The Boy” and Sony’s sci-fier “The 5th Wave” will battle for the fourth spot in the $9 million to $13 million range.

Ride Along 2” wound up the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with a solid $41 million at 3,175 locations — only $7 million short of the original’s 2014 launch in the same frame. Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” showed plenty of traction following its 12 Oscar nominations with $37.5 million at 3,559 sites. Disney’s “The Force Awakens” followed »

20 January 2016 5:11 AM, PST | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Our countdown of the 100 best films of the 21st century continues. This is Part 3 #50 through 26.

Click here for Part 2 (#75-51)!

The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. Movie attendance has fluctuated along with the economy, but that hasn’t stopped films from breaking box office records, »

What the Critics’ Choice Awards Can Tell Us About Oscar

By Patrick Shanley

Managing Editor

The Broadcast Film Critics Association handed out their Critics’ Choice Awards last evening in Los Angeles and is the first awards ceremony since the Academy released their official nominations last Thursday.

Those looking to the Critics’ Choice Awards in hopes of fleshing out their Oscar predictions will notice a few differences between last week’s Golden Globes and Sunday’s awards in the major categories. Most notably is the fact that Spotlight won best picture after being entirely shut out by the HFPA at the Globes.

Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Sylvester Stallone (Creed), and Brie Larson (Room) all repeated their Globes success with acting wins, but Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) took home the best supporting actress award in lieu of Kate Winslet’s (Steve Jobs) win the week before.

Giveaway: Win The Intern Starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Combo (3 Winners)

17 January 2016 8:02 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Writer/director Nancy Meyers' The Intern starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro is an ode to the lighthearted comedies of the 1940s and 1950s. It avoids the common tropes you might expect from an older gentleman returning to the workforce where he is befriended by a much younger, career-focused woman who happens to be the boss. As a result it was a critical and commercial hit this past year.

With The Intern making its Blu-ray, DVD and Digital debut on Tuesday, January 19, we have teamed up with Warner Home Video to offer three lucky readers each a copy of The Intern on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital combo pack. For a chance to win one, please fill out and submit the short entry form below. The odds of winning can be increased each and every day you stop back to enter for as many days as the contest is open. »

Jac Schaeffer penned the Blacklist script said to be tonally akin to "Attack the Block" and "This is the End". Schaeffer, Adam Shulman, Andrew Lauren and D.J. Gugenheim would also produce.

Catwoman now looks like Michelle Pfeiffer, completing the circle of art imitating life

14 January 2016 10:11 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Anne Hathaway tried to wrest away the crown, but Michelle Pfeiffer remains the queen of playing Catwoman…on film, anyway. After all, no one holds a candle to Eartha Kitt. But if you think “Catwoman,” you probably think of Pfeiffer slinking around in red lipstick and a skillfully sewed latex suit. Selina Kyle has gone through many transformations since Pfeiffer’s take. Since the New 52 revamped the DC universe, Kyle has been Catwoman, a member of the Justice League of America, and most recently the head of the Calabrese mob family. But in Catwoman #48, things go off the rails and Selina goes into hiding. In New York City and framed for a murder she did not commit, Catwoman is now on the run! And to uncover whoever is out to get her, she’ll have to ask for help from some unlikely—and untrustworthy—sources. Her hunt to uncover the »

Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2016: #57. Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal

9 January 2016 9:00 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Colossal

Director: Nacho Vigalondo

Writer: Nacho Vigalondo

We’ve been a bit underwhelmed with Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo’s two follow-ups to his fun 2007 debut Timecrimes, those being the alien invasion comedy Extraterrestrial (2011) and his English language internet thriller Open Windows (2014) with Elijah Wood. But we have high hopes for his current project, Colossal, which managed to score a cast including Anne Hathaway, Dan Stevens, and Jason Sudeikis. A minor hiccup occurred between the director and rights holder of Godzilla, which was thankfully settled so Vigalondo could return to doing something more meaningful. In short, Hathaway stars as woman discovering that severe catastrophic events are related to her own mental breakdown….which sounds a lot like The Brood (1979) meets forgotten Richard Burton thriller The Medusa Touch (1978).

Cast: Anne Hathaway, Dan Stevens, Jason Sudeikis, Tim Blake Nelson

Production Co.: Brightlight Pictures, Sayaka Producciones Audiovisuales

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. Tbd »
