‘Dark Souls 3′ Review (PS4)

I’m always apprehensive about the Dark Souls games, but once I let myself accept that death was inevitable I taught myself to get used to it. I’ve not got to the end of Dark Souls 3 yet, so this is my first impressions of the game, but I will say this…I think I’m in love… I’m not going to mention areas I’ve made it to or which bosses that I’ve managed to pass, because I don’t want to spoil it for anybody. What I will say though is if you have a love for exploring then this is the game for you. Finding the shortcuts to a new area, or discovering a door that makes getting from one place to another is often a highlight. The true rush though comes from defeating enemies and bosses that pose a challenge.

‘Flight 7500′ Review

Stars: Ryan KwantenAmy SmartJerry FerraraScout Taylor-ComptonChristian Serratos, Leslie Bibb | Written by Craig Rosenberg | Directed by Takashi Shimizu

Whenever a movie sits on the shelf for more than a couple years before being released, it’s hard not to wonder if the reason is because it turned out poorly. But when you look through the history books, or run a quick Google search, you’ll realize that many exceptional horror movies have languished in pre-release hell over the years. Films like You’re Next, The Cabin in the Woods, and Trick ‘r Treat took their sweet time entering our lives, and the same can certainly be said about Flight 7500 (formerly 7500).

But was this one worth the wait?

Written by Craig Rosenberg and directed by Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge), and originally set for release way back in 2012, Flight 7500 centers on the passengers of a doomed flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo. »

‘Rivers of London: Night Witch #2′ Review

Written by Ben Aaronovitch, Andrew Cartmel | Art by Lee Sullivan | Published by Titan Comics | Format: Paperback, 32pp

The first issue of the Night Witch arc was slightly odd in that the main characters of the book, PC Peter Grant and his boss Inspector Nightingale, barely featured. A lot of time was spent in setting up the building blocks of the story, of Russians, Russian witches, and Russian supernatural beings. But all in England. A very rich Russian businessman had had his daughter kidnapped, apparently by a Leshy, a Russian forest demon, and had approached a seemingly ageless Russian witch, Varvara, who was living under protection in London, to help but she refused. He was, however, pointed in the direction of wizard trainee Lesley May, who just happens to be the ex-partner of…. PC Peter Grant. See what they did there, with that whole six degrees of separation thing. Very nice. »

‘Doctor Who: The 9th Doctor #1′ Review (new ongoing)

13 April 2016 6:21 AM, PDT

Written by Cavan Scott | Art by Adriana Melo | Published by Titan Comics | Format: Paperback, 32pp

Although by no means perfect, and admittedly coloured by more than a little nostalgia, I enjoyed the recent 9th Doctor mini-series (that’s the Christopher Eccleston incarnation of The Doctor of course) and am happy to see it did well enough to earn an ongoing series. The greatest compliment I could pay it, indeed to any of the many Who titles, is that it felt like the TV show, the characters and story were spot on, and so I am more than happy to see scripter Cavan Scott return to continue his take on the character. We do get a new artist though in Adriana Melo but hey, a little fresh blood never hurt anyone.

Writer Scott is pretty lucky before even writing a word in that he has three excellent characters to use. Although »

‘Better Call Saul 2×09: Nailed’ Review

13 April 2016 1:22 AM, PDT

“Who’s the guy who won’t pull the trigger?”

You can’t change the consequences of your actions. You can’t uncrack your brother’s skull or drag a kind-hearted stranger whose face you never saw out of his unmarked desert grave. Whatever joy you had before from the actions that led you to that one un-take-backable moment is tainted and that taint, that spoilage, will weigh on you for the rest of your days. You can see it in the way Mike slumps behind the wheel of his car after Nacho gives him the news. Mike spends the episode riding high after an opening sequence recalling Cormac McCarthy’s The Counselor nets him a quarter million in cash and the undivided attention of Hector Salamanca. He looks happy to be back in the game on his own terms, happy to crack wise at Nacho, to flirt with his favorite waitress, »

‘Vinyl 1×09: Rock And Roll Queen’ Review

12 April 2016 11:47 AM, PDT

“Stop covering your cock!”

A fistfight in an elevator, a rock ‘n roll threesome, an indoor bat hunt, and some literally balls-out photography gave ‘Rock And Roll Queen,’ this week’s swing-for-the-fences episode of Vinyl, more than its share of lustful life. It’s an episode that bucks blandly traditional band narratives, tossing aside the dull idea of Jamie Yoko-ing the Bits in favor of a genuinely sexy three-way, a believable tangle of limbs and lips ignited by hilariously randy suggestive looks and a little bit of pizza-based foreplay. The narrative punch and the thrill of honest-to-god sexiness there is a refreshing boost for the subplot, and Juno Temple as Jamie should get as much time center-stage as possible. In love with the rotten world of rock promotion and development and unwilling to acknowledge its fatal flaws, she exudes an aura of doomed enthusiasm.

The show’s dramatic moments still »

‘Dark Souls #1′ Review (Titan Comics)

12 April 2016 5:32 AM, PDT

Written by George Mann | Art by Alan Quah | Published by Titan Comics | Format: Paperback, 32pp

The link between games, comics, television and movies (and assorted merchandise and toys of course) is growing stronger by the month seemingly, and there seems to be fewer and fewer franchises left that haven’t embraced the age of multi-media cross appeal. Clearly Bandai Namco Entertainment, publisher of the cult computer games (Dark Souls and Dark Souls II) have decided the time is right to dip their toes in that particular pool. Which is interesting, as Dark Souls doesn’t lend itself as readily to comics adaptation as some other games, like Deus Ex, do.

While certainly no expert, I have played Dark Souls, and the game is set in a large open world environment, is insanely difficult, and has the main objective of utilising stealth to progress through various adventures. The game operates on »

‘Straight Outta Dudleyville: The Legacy of the Dudley Boyz’ Review

12 April 2016 5:24 AM, PDT

If you are an old school fan of Ecw there are certain factions and stars that tend to stand out. For me the Dudley Boyz were one such faction. In Ecw, WWE, and beyond they created a pathway to destruction that has made them one of the best tag teams in history. Straight Outta Dudleyville: The Legacy of the Dudley Boyz gives the WWE version of this history.

As is usual in these types of sets, we get a short documentary about Bubba Ray and D-Von looking at how they got into wrestling, all the way up to their return to the WWE. The documentary is fun, and even gives part of the history that some fans may be unaware of. While the documentary may feel a little short, it pays respect not only to their Ecw years, but even dares to mention Bubba’s success in Tna.
