Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)- Comedy
A group of college baseball players navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.
Director:Richard Linklater |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Rest easy, Dazed and Confused fans: The '80s are just as much fun. While Richard Linklater's latest coming-of-age comedy isn't technically a sequel to his incredibly popular 1993 classic, Everybody Wants Some!! looks to be a film very much in the same vein, this time set on a college campus during the Reagan era. The story follows a group of college baseball players, led by Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, and Ryan Guzman among others, as they feel their oats as young though not-quite-there adults. If Linklater's previous work is any indication, viewers should settle in for some sensitive storytelling, round and relatable characters, and a celebration of youth. - Bret
God's Not Dead 2 (2016)- Drama
When a high school teacher is asked a question in class about Jesus, her response lands her in deep trouble.
Director:Harold Cronk |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It's unknown whether this sequel will perform as well as its predecessor, which, for many people, seemed to arrive out of nowhere last year and pulled in $60+ million at the U.S. box office. Our colleague over at Box Office Mojo let us know there's a notable lack in movement in Google search trends for the release, which arrives at the tail end of a recent run of Faith-based movies. Distributor Pure Flix Entertainment has set the sequel to play in three times as many theaters as the first movie.
Meet the Blacks (2016)- Comedy | Horror
As Carl Black gets the opportunity to move his family out of Chicago in hope of a better life, their arrival in Beverly Hills is timed with that city's annual purge, where all crime is legal for twelve hours.
Director:Deon Taylor |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Congratulations to The Purge series for earning a parody movie. Good thing Mike Epps is surrounding by a cast of supporting players to help him survive the transition from Chicago to Beverly Hills. Down in the credits we see comedian Paul Mooney playing a Klansman, which, if you're familiar at all with Mooney's humor, might be the main reason to see this movie.
Miles Ahead (2015)- Biography | Drama | Music | Romance
An exploration of the life and music of Miles Davis.
Director:Don Cheadle |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Don Cheadle makes his directorial debut in this biopic about Miles Davis, one of the more enigmatic cultural figures of the last century. The film must have been a true labor of love for the acclaimed actor because Cheadle helped pen the script in addition to portraying the iconic trumpeter in the lead role. There have been plenty of movies in recent months that have brought to life some of popular music's most illustrious minds and personalities. But, perhaps because of the sizable figure that Davis casts on the history of 20th century jazz in addition to Cheadle's expanded role in developing the story, this film in particular seems worthy of a particularly close look. - Bret
The Dark Horse (2014)- Drama
A brilliant but troubled New Zealand chess champion finds purpose by teaching underprivileged children about the rules of chess and life.
Director:James Napier Robertson |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: This inspirational drama serves as a spotlight for the talented Cliff Curtis, who of course is one of the stars of "Fear the Walking Dead." The film hit the world stage back in September 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival, where Curtis was considered a potential Best Actor Oscar nominee. Just because the film ultimately didn't earn an awards push doesn't mean its appeal hasn't grown; it has done quite well on the festival circuit.
La tête haute (2015)- Drama
A juvenile judge and a special educator are convinced that they can save the young delinquent Malony from himself and his violent ways.
Director:Emmanuelle Bercot |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Catherine Deneuve starring in the César Award-winning latest film from director/actress Emmanuelle Bercot could result in Bercot's best Stateside showing to date, even if the critical consensus is supportive but not exuberant about its troubled-teen drama.
Kill Your Friends (2015)- Comedy | Crime | Thriller
An A&R; man working at the height of the Britpop music craze goes to extremes in order to find his next hit.
Director:Owen Harris |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Nicholas Hoult starring in a dark, violent comedy that sounds and looks like a smoosh-up of Nick Hornby and Irvine Welsh novels is probably best served up late at night on your TV? We mean that as a potential compliment. James Corden and Craig Roberts co-star. Woof.
Natural Born Pranksters (2016)- Comedy
YouTube's best pranksters, Roman Atwood, Vitaly Z, and Dennis Roady make the leap to the big screen.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: It's still weird to us that YouTube sensations such as these seek the validation of a theatrical release when it's pretty much known that the audience is going to consume this movie the new old-fashioned way.
The Girl in the Photographs (2015)- Crime | Horror | Thriller
A bored young woman in a sleepy community called Spearfish starts receiving photographs of brutally murdered young women. Are they real or staged? The culprit is either a serial killer or some creep with a sick sense of humour.
Director:Nick Simon |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: We're still trying to figure out how this movie nabbed Kal Penn for a starring role in this horror flick directed by one of the guys who wrote The Pyramid. Look, there's Skinner from "The X-Files" too! We might have to watch this?
April 8
Hardcore Henry (2015)- Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller
Henry is resurrected from death with no memory, and he must save his wife from a telekinetic warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.
Director:Ilya Naishuller |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: If Spring is a snoozefest so far, jumpstart the season with first-person action film Hardcore Henry. Director Ilya Naishuller is a "huge proponent of practical effects." So, he shot everything "as real as humanly possible," which makes the movie even more badass. Well, that and the fact that the psychotic villain also has telekinetic powers. - Chako
The Boss (2016)- Comedy
A titan of industry is sent to prison after she's caught insider trading. When she emerges ready to rebrand herself as America's latest sweetheart, not everyone she screwed over is so quick to forgive and forget.
Director:Ben Falcone |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: We love that Melissa McCarthy has become one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, and it seems like she might be getting into a rhythm where she alternates working with directors Paul Feig and her husband, Ben Falcone. With a few more months to go before Ghostbusters is released, Falcone and McCarthy offer up what looks to be a wickedly funny improvement on Tammy.
Demolition (2015)- Drama
A successful investment banker struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. With the help of a customer service rep and her young son, he starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
Director:Jean-Marc Vallée |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Jake Gyllenhaal dealt with losing his wife in Southpaw, and here he gives the same level of ferocious commitment to a starring role that should have earned, on paper at least, an elusive Best Actor Oscar nomination. Aiding the campaign is Wild/Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée; alas, the movie ultimately earned an inauspicious April release. Audiences might help keep the movie around for a while since it seems to be going over well with the general public.
The Invitation (2015)- Drama | Mystery | Thriller
While attending a dinner party at his former home, a man thinks his ex-wife and her new husband have sinister intentions for their guests.
Director:Karyn Kusama |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The indie world is happy to see Girlfight director Karyn Kusama back in genre mode. Joining her is the screenwriting duo of Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who worked with Kusama on both Crazy/Beautiful and Æon Flux.
Louder Than Bombs (2015)- Drama
The fractious family of a father and his two sons confront their different feelings and memories of their deceased wife and mother, a famed war photographer.
Director:Joachim Trier |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Norwegian director Joachim Trier's first two movies, Reprise and Oslo, August 31st rank as some of my favorites from the last decade, and he makes his English-language debut here with a story about, among other things, how a family constructs its collective and individual ideas of truth. We learn the truth of Isabelle Huppert's character's fate early in the story, and Trier then reveals how her death was processed as a memory by the members of her family. Along the way he also constructs some elaborate fantasy sequences that illustrate why he's one of the most promising directors working today. - Arno
Hatuna MeNiyar (2015)- Drama
Hagit, a young woman with mild mental deficiency, works in a toilet-paper factory. She lives with her mother Sarah, a divorcée who gave up her life for her daughter. Hagit strives for independence and Sarah is torn between her desire to protect her, and her own will to live. When a relationship develops between her and the son of the factory owner, Hagit hides it from her mother. The announcement of the closing of the factory shakes Hagit and Sarah's life and jeopardizes Hagit's love story.
Director:Nitzan Giladi |
|
The Buzz: Nitzan Giladi has been laureled by several film festivals for his feature debut, as have his co-lead actresses Moran Rosenblatt and Assi Levy. Prepare for a wallop in the third act.
Mr. Right (2015)- Action | Comedy | Romance
A girl falls for the "perfect" guy, who happens to have a very fatal flaw: he's a hitman on the run from the crime cartels who employ him.
Director:Paco Cabezas |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Surprising to see such a derivative story idea from Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis. Director Paco Cabezas, who handled a bulk of "Penny Dreadful"'s upcoming third season, gets dinged the most by critics from the reviews we've read, though. Destined for a short theatrical life, most people will probably catch a stream of this crime-caper that lured quite an appealing cast. Speaking of the cast, Sam Rockwell is overdue for a role that is worthy of his talent.
The Dying of the Light (2015)- Documentary
A documentary that explores the history and craft of motion-picture presentation through the lives and stories of the last generation of career projectionists.
Director:Peter Flynn |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: We hear there's a rather charming series of interviews to be enjoyed once you get past the chilly and dire title of Peter Flynn's documentary on cinema projectionists and the switch from film to digital projection in theaters. Shot mostly around the Northeastern United States, we're looking forward to meeting this cast of eccentrics.
A Space Program (2015)- Documentary | Adventure | Drama | Sci-Fi
The artist Tom Sachs and his team of bricoleurs build a handmade space program and send two female astronauts to Mars.
Director:Van NeistatStars:Hailey Gates |
|
Watch Trailer |

The Jungle Book (2016)- Adventure | Drama | Family | Fantasy
After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther, Bagheera, and free spirited bear, Baloo.
Director:Jon Favreau |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz:
This just in: After a successful first weekend overseas -- Mowgli and co. brought in just under $30 million -- Disney has greenlighted a sequel with Jon Favreau in place to develop and direct.
Bring on the bare necessities! The Jungle Book has always been one of my favorite childhood films, and I can't wait to see Jon Favreau's interpretation of the Disney classic come to life on the big screen. From all of the trailers I've seen so far, this film looks great! - Akimi
Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016)- Comedy | Drama
As their surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, the crew at Calvin's Barbershop come together to bring some much needed change to their neighborhood.
Director:Malcolm D. Lee |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Calvin made a wise decision some time ago to bring some female staff members into the barbershop, which could help lure a wider than expected crowd for this threequel, which arrives 12 years after the last chapter. We're not knocking the appeal of these movies -- it's more about how we've seen movies such as Zoolander 2 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 perform lately. Out of all of these long delayed sequels, we think The Next Cut might perform the best. Also, it was great timing on the part of New Line/Warner Bros. to schedule the release soon after N.W.A.s induction on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Criminal (2016)- Action | Crime | Drama | Mystery | Sci-Fi | Thriller
In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative's memories, secrets, and skills are implanted into a death-row inmate in hopes that he will complete the operative's mission.
Director:Ariel Vromen |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Lionsgate specializes in direct-to-VOD thrillers, but when you make one starring Deadpool and Wonder Woman in the cast, you sorta have to release it in theaters, right? The gist here is that CIA agent Reynolds is a goner, but his consciousness was implanted into criminal Kevin Costner in order to bring down a terrorist plot. When he's not killing or close to being killed, Costner gets to be Gal Gadot's lover by proxy. The release comes at a tough time for the studio, which has been hammered by industry-watchers for the collapse of the Divergent franchise and other box-office disappointments.
Green Room (2015)- Crime | Horror | Thriller
A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.
Director:Jeremy Saulnier |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Jeremy Saulnier's Blue Ruin truly was a revelation, the kind of movie that will continue to accrue devotees over time. Saulnier was offered Hollywood work after Blue Ruin proved to be more than a festival darling. So, I love him even more for choosing to direct another one of his scripts as his next project. Also, I've been hoping for a director to cast Anton Yelchin in something that coaxes out more of the young actor's talent. Casting Patrick Stewart as a neo-Nazi is a guaranteed way to grab headlines, but I sense that just as much attention is being paid to Saulnier as one of the most promising writer/directors around. - Arno
Fan (2016)- Action | Drama | Thriller
Gaurav, a huge fan of movie star Aryan Khanna, heads to Mumbai in order to wish his God a happy birthday. When things don't go according to plan, Gaurav's obsession with Aryan crosses the line.
Director:Maneesh Sharma |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Shuddh Desi Romance director Maneesh Sharma will see his worldwide profile rise with this innovative movie, which cast Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role and became the first Bollywood production to shoot in a different country (Croatia, in this case).
Sing Street (2016)- Comedy | Drama | Music | Romance
A boy growing up in Dublin during the 1980s escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress the mysterious girl he likes.
Director:John Carney |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A movie about a band of young talented Irishmen coming together to make some tuneful music? No, it's not The Commitments but looks to be just as charming. It's Once director John Carney's latest offering, which follows the story of a young band of pop-singing Dubliners. If the trailer is any indication, expect some winsome characters and earworms aplenty. - Bret
Vergine giurata (2015)- Drama
Years after declaring her eternal virginity and opting to live life as a man in the mountains of Albania, Hana looks to return to living as a woman as she settles into a new existence in modern-day Milan.
Director:Laura Bispuri |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Laura Bispuri raked in serious awards and accolades on the festival circuit for her feature debut as director and co-writer of this adaptation of Elvira Dones's 2006 documentary and 2007 novel. Star Alba Rohrwacher makes an appearance in Tale of Tales, which is also being released this week.
Rio, I Love You (2014)- Comedy | Drama | Fantasy | Romance
A series of short films set in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The third movie in this short-film city-loving anthology series finally gets a U.S. release, though it arrives with much less fanfare than its two predecessors.
Un tango más (2015)- Documentary | Musical
The life and love story of Argentina's famous tango dancers Maria Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes, who met as teenagers and danced together for nearly fifty years until a painful separation tore them apart.
Director:German Kral |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The cool-sounding aspect of this documentary finds María Nieves Rego and Juan Carlos Copes telling their story to a group of young dancers and choreographers, who in turn interpret their entwined history via performance.
Colonia (2015)- Drama | Romance | Thriller
A young woman's desperate search for her abducted boyfriend that draws her into the infamous Colonia Dignidad, a sect nobody has ever escaped from.
Director:Florian Gallenberger |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The Colonia Dignidad was already about a decade old when the Chilean military coup of 1973 occurred, and hopefully the best thing this movie, which is based on actual events, will do is bring more attention to the utopian experiment which until recently functioned completely outside of Chilean law.
April 22
Elvis & Nixon (2016)- Comedy | History
The untold true story behind the meeting between Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n Roll, and President Richard Nixon, resulting in this revealing, yet humorous moment immortalized in the most requested photograph in the National Archives.
Director:Liza Johnson |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: So, maybe it wasn't the Yalta Conference. But for most folks, the greatest meeting of the 20th century just may have been when Elvis landed in the Oval Office to meet up with Tricky Dick President Richard Nixon himself on Dec. 21, 1970. The meeting was memorialized in what has become one of the most memorable if bizarre photographs of the last century. This latest offering from Amazon Studios provides the story behind that photograph and reveals a little bit about two cultural figures who still command much attention after their deaths, precisely because beneath their carefully crafted public veneers lay some seriously idiosyncratic personalities, now on full display again on the big screen. - Bret
The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016)- Action | Adventure | Drama | Fantasy
Eric and fellow warrior Sara, raised as members of ice Queen Freya's army, try to conceal their forbidden love as they fight to survive the wicked intentions of both Freya and her sister Ravenna.
Director:Cedric Nicolas-Troyan |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Though Snow White and the Huntsman made $400 million worldwide, most people remember it as the movie set where Kristen Stewart stepped out on then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson with director Rupert Sanders, truly bringing an end to the Twilight saga. Though plans for the sequel didn't include Stewart, the addition of Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain might help audiences easily forget Snow White, one thing Universal might have let slip is the fact that the original movie didn't hold up well (currently it has a low 6.1 rating on IMDb), so as much as the idea of Charlize Theron's army facing off against Emily Blunt's Huntsmen appeals in general, this second chapter might face a steep drop off in ticket sales after opening weekend.
Purple Rain (1984)- Drama | Music | Musical | Romance
A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise.
Director:Albert Magnoli |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The movie that intensified Prince's fame (in the waters of Lake Minnetonka) is getting a re-release this weekend to commemorate the passing of one of our favorite all-time artists. Rest in peace, Purple One.
A Hologram for the King (2016)- Comedy | Drama
A failed American sales rep looks to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his company's product to a wealthy monarch.
Director:Tom Tykwer |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Novelist/occasional screenwriter Dave Eggers gets another one of his works translated into a movie, a story focused on the Great Recession that was developed as an indie project and initially launched into the world at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, where world sales agreements helped get the last bits of money in place to make the movie. We're still surprised that Eggers's best-known book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, has never been turned into a film, and we're unsure of the general appeal here even with Tom Hanks portraying washed-up salesman Alan Clay. Though there appears to be lighter tones in the story, its framework is rather depressing.
Tale of Tales (2015)- Drama | Fantasy
From the bitter quest of the Queen of Longtrellis, to two mysterious sisters who provoke the passion of a king, to the King of Highhills obsessed with a giant Flea, these tales are inspired by the fairytales by Giambattista Basile.
Director:Matteo Garrone |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: For his English-language debut, Gomorrah writer/director Matteo Garrone makes a wonderful decision to go even further out there than he did in his most recent project, Reality. At the heart of this decision is a tribute to the aesthetics and design of Italy's golden age of cinema, the sort of filmmaking that Garrone was compared to when he first hit the international film scene.
Nina (2016)- Biography | Drama | Music
The story of the late jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone including her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson.
Director:Cynthia Mort |
|
Watch Trailer |
Compadres (2016)- Action | Comedy | Crime
As former cop Garza seeks revenge on Santos, the crime lord who framed him, he forms an unlikely team with a young hacker who successfully stole $10 million from Santos.
Director:Enrique Begne |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Star Omar Chaparro got his start about a decade ago on the radio, where his character-focused comedy helped him make the tough transition into TV, where his celebrity status grew after winning a special edition of "Big Brother Mexico." Lots of voice-over work and movie/TV spin-offs followed (he appeared in Mexico's version of "Sex and the City" as well a the Fast and Furious parody Superfast!, and this action-comedy was created to help him cross over in the States, though you could say he's already a celebrity here, too.
The Meddler (2015)- Comedy | Drama | Romance
An aging widow from New York City follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband passes away.
Director:Lorene Scafaria |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World writer/director Lorene Scafaria offers up this mother/daughter comedy which, like so many others, seems to assert that the parent is more neurotic and annoying than their child. Really, though, it looks like Susan Sarandon's character is living mostly right to us since she always has a bag of fresh bagels handy, offers astrology-based advice, and has it going on to the degree where Harley-riding J.K. Simmons wants to spend the rest of his life with her, unconditionally.
April 29
Keanu (2016)- Action | Comedy
Friends hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen kitten by posing as drug dealers for a street gang.
Director:Peter Atencio |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Who doesn't love watching a cat video on the internet? But stretching out the idea into a 100-minute comedy seems like a risky prospect no matter who you are, so that's why we hope one of our favorite comedy duos, Jordan Peele and the suddenly everywhere Keegan-Michael Key, don't miss the mark with their first project since they consciously uncoupled from their successful TV show last year.
Mother's Day (2016)- Comedy | Drama
Three generations come together in the week leading up to Mother's Day.
Director:Garry Marshall |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Garry Marshall is back with another ensemble holiday movie. It's a subgenre that tends to alienate everyone but its core audience though this particular one, which features a nearly all white cast and Julia Roberts in a memorable wig, will probably become a perennial at-home favorite. Looks at Jason Sudeikis on the poster; he's grinding his teeth.
Ratchet & Clank (2016)- Animation | Action | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Sci-Fi
When the galaxy comes under the threat of a nefarious space captain, a mechanic and his newfound robot ally join an elite squad of combatants to save the universe.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: TMNT's Kevin Munroe teams with animation vet Jericca Cleland to tag-team direct this adaptation of the popular video game series that you already know really really really wants to become a franchise. What you may not know unless you're a fan of the game: Sony developed a version of the movie more than decade ago with Edgar Wright and Guillermo Del Toro coming and going from the project at different stages.
The Family Fang (2015)- Comedy | Drama | Mystery

Director:Bob Yari |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Veteran indie producer Bob Yari takes a second turn behind the camera to direct this sturdy-looking biography of Ernest Hemingway's friendship with journalist Ed Meyers. Deceased war correspondent Denne Bart Petitclerc, also a friend of Hemingway's, wrote the script, which Yari finally got into production after a series of delays. Fans of a slow burner will probably be satisfied with this story.
A Beautiful Planet (2016)- Documentary
An exploration of Earth and beyond as seen from the International Space Station. Narrated by Jennifer Lawrence.

|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Travel to space guided by the voice of Jennifer Lawrence in the latest documentary from Toni Myers, who has focused her career on the subject.
Viva (2015)- Drama
When his estranged father returns, a hairdresser is forced to quit performing at the local drag club.
Director:Paddy Breathnach |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Now that drag has fully come into the mainstream here in the U.S., what a better time to get a look at a culture where it's a little less easy for a man to teeter outside his door in a pair of heels? With senses of humor and drama that bring Almodóvar to mind, Irish director Paddy Breathnach dove into a Cuban subculture and emerged with a film that made the shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Oscar last year. - Arno
The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015)- Biography | Drama
The story of the life and academic career of the pioneer Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his friendship with his mentor, Professor G.H. Hardy.
Director:Matt Brown |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Polite reviews of this biopic indicate that Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel make it a worthwhile view despite shortcomings with the script and its direction. Writer/director Matt Brown is due to get more attention for his next project: he wrote the screenplay for London Town, a punk-rock memoir centered around The Clash that stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as frontman Joe Strummer.
