Civil War Star Daniel Bruhl Joins Bad Robot’s Hunt For The God Particle

10 May 2016 1:19 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

He drove a wedge between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Captain America: Civil War and now, Daniel Bruhl is bound for the stars via Paramount and Bad Robot’s mind-bending sci-fi flick, God Particle.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, confirming that Bruhl will don the space gear as an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, one who bears witness to a “terrifying discovery that challenges everything they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for survival.”

Early reports claim that a physics experiment gone awry – one that seemingly involves a particle accelerator in the vein of Europe’s Large Hadron Collider – is to blame for the sudden disappearance of Earth, and the Iss crew is left facing a terrifying dilemma when an unidentified space shuttle drifts into orbit. Friend or foe? That’s something that’s being kept firmly under wraps for now.

How to Wow on the Red Carpet on Festival Circuit

10 May 2016 11:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Venice may be known as the jewel of the Adriatic, and Berlin brings out funky fashionistas in February, but for the haute couture world, Cannes is considered the crowning glory of the film festival circuit. The call of the Croisette brings out the best from the French houses, as thousands of journalists from around the world are on hand to cover the sartorial excess of the red carpet — and the brands that are on the backs of the actresses. Despite each festival’s distinct sartorial flavor, there is a general rule of thumb for all three European destinations, says stylist Tara Swennen: “You want to make sure it’s really classy, it’s really elegant, and that you stand out.”

Cannes

“The beauty of Cannes is that you can go all out,” says Swennen, who’s dressing Kristen Stewart and “Money Monster’s” Caitriona Balfe for this year’s extravaganza. »

Colonia Review

15 April 2016 7:50 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Colonia is a romance/thriller starring Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl as a young couple caught up in the 1973 Chilean military coup, when General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the democratically-elected but left-leaning Allende government. The event launched a period of harsh repression during which thousands of people were “disappeared,” and torture and murder of suspected dissidents was common, a time that still haunts Chileans today. One of the dictator’s favor places for those interrogations was a remote compound occupied a shadowy religious cult with reported neo-Nazi leanings, known as Colonia Dignidad (Dignity Colony), whose leader Paul Schafer was an influential supporter of Pinochet.

This is real history and it sounds like a great premise for a gripping historical/political drama but Colonia fails to capitalize on that potential. Instead, we get a fitful thriller that focuses more on a romance between the lead characters and less on the history. With »

Colonia Review – Emma Watson And Daniel Daniel Brühl Nail Very Odd Roles

15 April 2016 7:17 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

“Inspired by true events,” can mean a lot of different things in the movie game, and in the case of Colonia, it seems to be working almost a horror-film spin on the idea. There is a country called Chile. 1973 saw a military coup there, and a place called Colonia Dignidad was a cult compound run by ex-Nazi Paul Schäfer, which served as a torture station for Pinochet’s secret police. After that we diverge from reality, though in a somewhat interesting way.

The setting is real, but the plot is something else.

Lena (Emma Watson) is a stewardess for Lufthansa, and her lover Daniel (Daniel Brühl) has fallen under the spell of pre-coup Chile, and those who struggle against the country’s harsh political reality. The pair are in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Daniel is taken to Colonia Dignidad. When no one will help her, Lena »

New to Streaming: ‘Inherent Vice,’ ‘Krampus,’ ‘Belgica,’ ‘Jane Got a Gun,’ and More

15 April 2016 6:58 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Belgica (Felix van Groeningen)

Writer/director Felix van Groeningen based Belgica’s script on his father’s experiences running a nightclub in Ghent. How closely the story hews to the real events is anyone’s guess, though the boilerplate “though inspired by true events, all persons depicted are fictitious” title card which opens the film suggests that it might hit too close to home for more than a few real-life people. »

Happy Birthday, Emma Watson!

15 April 2016 5:00 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

A happiest of birthdays to former blockbuster youngster and now indie starlet Emma Watson! In one of the most charming bits of movie programming serendipity, her new film Colonia is also being released today.

Colonia debuted at last fall's Toronto Film Festival, and is now in select theatres and on VOD. Set during the factual Chilean military uprising in 1973, the film stars Watson as a young woman going undercover within a cult to rescue her lover (Daniel Brühl) from its terrifying captivity. The film looks to deliver morbid thrills against a political background, with Michael Nyqist's variation on an actual cult leader looking like the stuff of nightmares.

While Watson is still beloved by Harry Potter fans for her long-haul performance as Hermione Granger, her post-franchise work in smaller films has steadily shown new shades to the actress. Her best work yet is her turn in Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, »

Emma Watson Risks It All for Her Man in Colonia

14 April 2016 11:41 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

When is a historically-based political thriller not a historically-based political thriller? When it only pretends to be one for twenty minutes or so before switching gears to become an action/drama about life inside a mysterious cult. This isn’t automatically a bad thing… Lena (Emma Watson) is a stewardess who arrives in Chile for a few days of rest, relaxation, and time with her boyfriend, Daniel (Daniel Brühl). He came to Santiago several months earlier to assist the people in their protests against a harsh and unfair government, but when a military coup sends the city into chaos he and Lena find themselves trapped. He’s taken prisoner and sent to a remote camp called Colonia Dignidad, and while she’s free to leave for safer shores she instead stays in Chile intent on finding him. Colonia Dignidad is, on its surface, a charity-based camp filled with people dedicating their lives to God through hard work »

Why fewer studio films needn’t be a bad thing

Warner Bros is set to be the latest studio to gamble on fewer blockbuster movies. But there's a big silver lining, Simon argues...

Last week, the news landed that Warner Bros was considering reducing its output of films, focusing its slate primarily on DC, Lego and Harry Potter movies.

The argument runs that it’s had a bumpy few years, with expensive films such as Pan, Jupiter Ascending and In The Heart Of The Sea leaving the office copy of Excel looking decidedly red and distressed. The box office tail off of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is said not to have helped, either. It actually looks like we're officially in the era where a movie will end up making just under $1bn and end up being called a commercial disappointment.

If and when Warner Bros follows such an approach – and it’s not confirmed that it will, »

Emma Watson Takes An Acting Break

21 February 2016 6:21 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

"Harry Potter" franchise actress Emma Watson is said to be taking a good year off from acting. In an interview with feminist bell hooks (via News.com.au), the young British star says:

"I'm taking a year away from acting to focus on two things. My own personal development is one. My own personal task is to read a book a week and also to read a book a month as part of my book club. One thing I am going to do that I've been working on for a while is completing my yoga Level 3 meditation for teaching."

Watson recently finished filming "The Circle" with Tom Hanks which opens late this year, and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" which opens early 2017. Her most recent film "Regression" opened in limited release a few weeks ago, but flopped. She also has "Colonia" which scores a limited release in April. »

'Harry Potter' Star Emma Watson Is Taking a Break from Acting

20 February 2016 12:23 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Can you go a full 12 month stretch without any new movies from Harry Potter star Emma Watson? Well, you're going to have to, as the fan-favorite actress has declared that she is taking a full one year break from acting. Though, in the scheme of things, we'll probably never know she is gone. As she has a number of upcoming films set to be released over the course of the next two years. We probably won't feel the sting of this Emma Watson drought until at least 2018.

Emma Watson wants to go on an acting hiatus so that she can focus on herself. She also plans to give more energy to her work with the HeForShe campaign, which targets gender equality. Here's what she had to say in a recent interview with Paper Magazine.

"I'm taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really. My own personal development is one. »

Emma Watson infiltrates a cult to rescue Daniel Bruhl in new Colonia trailer

19 February 2016 5:31 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

There's something about cults which has always interested me, the idea that a person can ignore everything that makes them who they are and completely submit to a most likely insane person who seeks to bend their will in service of their own beliefs. In addition to being both fascinating and terrifying, cults also make for great movie fodder. Florian Gallenberger's Colonia delves... Read More »

U.S. Trailer For ‘Colonia’ Starring Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl

19 February 2016 6:52 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall was the Chilean drama Colonia starring Mikael Nyqvist, Emma Watson, and Daniel Brühl, which follows a young couple who become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Directed by Florian Gallenberger, it was picked up for a U.S. release by Screen Media Films and now we have the first U.S. trailer.

We said in our review, “Colonia ultimately falls prey to a desire for a concrete happy ending in the face of adversity. While the film’s exact conclusion works well in Argo because it’s the goal from the beginning, the airport chase here plays as an afterthought. We invest so much time in the compound and its oppression that turning the emotional drama of love into against-the-clock action feels disingenuous. Especially since not everyone survives the initial fight for freedom. How can we experience what should be »

Emma Watson's Colonia Trailer Is Creepy And Fascinating, Watch It Now

18 February 2016 12:58 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Emma Watson’s quest to prove to people that she’s more than just Hermione Granger continues with Colonia, which premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Based on real, and rather horrific events, Watson has teamed up with some almighty cinematic talent for Colonia, and the first trailer suggests that it will go a long way to putting the world of Hogwarts and wizardry behind her.  Based on the real Colonia Dignidad, which was a cult in the South of Chile that was led by the German preacher Paul Schafer, Colonia’s trailer, from Yahoo, makes it clear that it will be a dark and brooding thriller, one which sees Emma Watson’s charcter put through quite an ordeal.  Colonia is set in 1973, and has at its heart Emma Watson’s Lena and Daniel Bruhl’s Daniel, a newly »

New Trailer: Emma Watson In "Colonia"

Screen Media Films have released the first trailer for "Colonia," Florian Gallenberger's upcoming 1970s Chile-set true story drama in which "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson plays a flight attendant who disguises herself as a religious devotee to infiltrate the Colonia Dignidad and rescue her activist boyfriend (Daniel Bruhl).

Said boyfriend was taken there when he was caught campaigning in the streets for President Salvador Allende. Though a religious cult's base on the surface, the place doubled as a torture prison for dictator Augusto Pinochet. Michael Nyqvist also stars in the film which opens in cinemas and on VOD on April 15th.
