In the compulsively listenable follow-up to her widely acclaimed debut novel, You, Caroline Kepnes weaves a tale that Booklist calls "the love child of Holden Caulfield and Patrick Bateman".
Hidden Bodies marks the return of a voice that Stephen King described as original and hypnotic, and through the divisive and charmingly sociopathic character of Joe Goldberg, Kepnes satirizes and dissects our culture, blending suspense with scathing wit.
Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past 10 years, this 30-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he's heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.
In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can't stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don't always stay that way. They reemerge like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in Soho House, he's more desperate than ever to keep his secrets buried. He doesn't want to hurt his new girlfriend - he wants to be with her forever. But if she ever finds out what he's done, he may not have a choice....

"Approach With Caution, All Ye Who Enter Here"
At the start of this book, I had a lot of second thoughts, along the lines of "Why did I DO it? Why did I buy this sequel to a book that needed no sequel, and never should have HAD a sequel?" But only one hour in, just as in "You," I was completely hooked. Yes, it's sick, twisted, sexually explicit and violent, but that's because the reader is inside the head of a crazily smart, wickedly self-rationalizing serial killer. How could it be anything else? Let's just say that if you loved "You," you'll love (or at least become temporarily infatuated with) this book, but if you DISLIKED "You," you're making a HUGE MISTAKE. Turn back now, before it's too late. This book is everything "You" is, only MORE so. More of EVERYTHING. Along with even more laugh out loud moments and more wicked surprises.
Once again, many thanks to Audible and to Santino Fontana for the out-of-this-world, note-perfect narration. How does he DO it? He must absolutely spend WEEKS rehearsing to become this character. Highly recommended--but for mature, unshockable audiences only.
"I want Caroline Kepnes for my new best friend!"
Okay, I'm really beginning to worry about myself. I WANT a serial killer to evade the justice system. Joe's character works because he has many of the same thoughts about everyday life situations that we all do. The irritations of the idiots you meet everyday, but his thoughts are hilarious. Joe only works with the performance of Santino Fontana. His performance is perfection! If you can stand four letter words (an abundance of them, c-word included), and what to get into the charming mind of a serial killer, this is your book. Be sure to buy the 1st book before this one. It will set the stage.
To my new BFF-Tell me more about Joe's childhood.
"please please write a third!"
It's an excellent book -- I hope a series, is that kinda messed up?
Well, the narrator has a voice like butter. He kinda makes you root for Joe.
No particular scene is a favorite.
There were several moments I laughed out loud.
"Not You..."
I poured a bowl of cereal expecting to go Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs and instead all I found was a bowl of Frosted Flakes - and even though "They're Grrrrrreat!" they aren't F-ing Cocoa Puffs!!! This is how I feel except that You (the first book in this series) is the Cocoa Puffs and Hidden Bodies is the Frosted Flakes.
The original title of this book was Love and that is definitely a more fitting title. I'm not even sure why this is called Hidden Bodies. It doesn't seem to fit. But let's get to the real meat and potatoes of my 3 Star rating - I miss crazy Joe! I miss the "I'm-going-to-misinterpret-everything-the-girl-I-am-obsessed-with-does-and-turn-it-into-how-she-is-in-love-with-me" Joe. Trust me, Joe is still insane, but it is different. It isn't the kind of crazy that I found so endearing in the last book. I am let down.
Now, had I gone into this book not knowing how entertaining, funny, witty, and completely bonkers Joe was in You, then I probably would have enjoyed this book more because it really was good. BUT... knowing that the best parts of the last book were missing in this book lead me to disappointment. Again, not because the story wasn't good, not because I didn't enjoy the book, but because I missed the brand of crazy that Joe embodied in You.
"I will keep this my dirty little secret"
Ahhh tricky but up there among the top 20! Pure fun but I could never admit it to anyone I know.
I like that the protagonist is down right bad but yet someone you can relate too. Normally this would irk me I hate the bad guys that seem good, yet this guy is so clever.
The reader is awesome he may have made the book. I would rate him in my top five narrators!
Yes and I did. I listened while I slept rewound and listened again. Shame on me for loving this book.
Hmmmm I don't know I would have to say I don't rate a lot of books. This one was worth it I loved it, but shhhh it's a secret so bad it's good. Can't wait for the next one! Listen to the first one and then this one:) I won't tell if you don't;)
"Hidden Bodies"
It felt like I waited forever for this book to be released. I absolutely loved "You", and Hidden Bodies didn't disappoint. Definitely worth a credit.
"Im going to need more Joe and soon!"
I could not put down this the second book from Kepnes. This was another pager turner.
You cannot actually believe it is written by a woman
This is about an obesssive guy who if you get in his way may kill you..You find yourself rooting for this guy.
Cannot say what scene the whole book...I laughed, was stunned, was touched this book ran through all my emotions
No just the whole book
I have never read anything quite like this...I was dragged in and loved all of it and now I don't know what I will listen too...I dont think I will find anything this good for a very long time
"Freaking Awesome"
this book kept me interested the entire time, even better than the first one "You" which was still really really good. I think this Santino narrator is my favorite of all the books I've listened too which is well over 100. can't wait for the next one!!!!!
"Just as good as her first book You"
Way to go Caroline, You did it again. This book was just as good as her first book YOU, hard to put down, always wondering whats next. Waiting for a Third in this series
"American Psycho Lite"
What niche could this series of Kepner books fill, short of out-and-out pornography? The protagonist is a scarily charming psychopath who kills off those who cross him with dreary regularity. I got that in the first book. A diet of murder and frat-boy sex acts is too boring to propel me through book #3.
