Consider This: How Fisher Stevens Rebooted His Career and Joined Forces With Leonardo DiCaprio to Save the World

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In 2004, Fisher Stevens went to Ohio with a coalition of artists to help John Kerry get elected president. It didn’t work, but Stevens — an actor-turned-director best known for campy roles in a string of ’80s and ’90s films such as “Short Circuit” and “Hackers” — emerged a changed man. “It was a fucked-up time,” Stevens recalled over lunch near his offices in downtown Manhattan, “but this a whole other fucked-up time.”

Flash forward a dozen years and Stevens is enmeshed in a new stage of his career, as a prolific documentarian who moonlights as an actor. Six years ago, he won an Oscar as a co-producer of “The Cove,” photographer-turned-filmmaker Louie Psihoyos’ thrilling exposé of the Japanese fishing industry. By then, he had stepped away from GreeneStreet Films, the independent production company he started in 1996 with John Penotti. That same year, Stevens launched Insurgent Media with Andrew Kirsch and Erik Gordon »

Hollywood Film Awards: Robert De Niro, Natalie Portman Support Hillary Clinton on Eve of Election

6 November 2016 11:41 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

With the presidential election less than two days away, several celebrities used Sunday’s Hollywood Film Awards to stump for Hillary Clinton.

The event — which host James Corden jokingly called “the last awards show before the apocalypse” — honored some of the biggest names in film, including Matthew McConaughey, Natalie Portman, Tom Hanks, Mel GibsonLeonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro.

Despite the looming election, the mood inside the Beverly Hilton ballroom was light, not tense.

Corden opened the show with a few political jokes. “This year they brought back ‘Star Wars’ with a female lead. They rebooted ‘Ghostbusters’ with a female lead. And I pray to God they reboot the Clinton presidency with a female lead,” he quipped during the monologue.

Bernie Sanders is here tonight,” Corden announced. “I’m joking, I’m joking. I just wanted to see the look of terror on Clint Eastwood’s face.”

The Ivory Game Review

5 November 2016 11:39 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Just days after the Leonardo DiCaprio climate change documentary Before the Flood hit the airwaves over on the National Geographic Channel, another feature executive produced by the Oscar-winning actor – and centering on a troublesome global issue — has arrived. However, rather than offering a look at how humanity’s actions are taking a toll on the environmental, The Ivory Game captures the ongoing illegal ivory trade, which is quickly robbing the world of its elephant population. Co-directed by Richard Ladkani (The Devil’s Miner) and Oscar nominee Kief Davidson (Open Heart), the film travels across the world to unravel the struggle involved in protecting these animals from the growing threat of extinction.

Following wildlife activists, frontline rangers, intelligence operatives and high-level conservationists all combating the ivory trade in their own ways, The Ivory Game delves impressively deep into the trafficking ring surrounding ivory, shedding light on an underground global network that most are blissfully unaware of. »

5 November 2016 10:01 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

The Avengers stars are on a mission to get President Barack Obama‘s attention in support of protestors aiming to halt the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Protestors say the 1,172-mile conduit that is planned to cross the Missouri River would put their community’s sole water source at risk and destroy sacred Native American sites.

Among those joining the protesters in solidarity are actors Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans. In the past few weeks, all four Avengers stars took to social media to share their support — and encourage President Obama to join forces with them.

Hillary Clinton for President: 37 Filmmakers Reveal Why She’s the Best Choice

4 November 2016 2:10 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

It came as no surprise in October that Michael Moore’s secret documentary “Michael Moore in Trumpland” was a pro-Hillary Clinton film urging Americans to vote for the democratic presidential nominee on November 8. Moore has been one of the most vocal and politically active filmmakers of his generation, if not the most active, and he felt that too much of the election conversation was dominated by negativity.

“I just thought, I’m going to do something here and give people positive reasons to think about voting for her,” Moore said at the film’s premiere in New York on October 18. “What the country doesn’t need is to be told that Trump is crazy, dangerous, a psychopath and sociopath. He has written and produced that movie, and it appears daily.”

New to Streaming: FilmStruck, ‘The Terrorizers,’ ‘Sausage Party,’ ‘Tickled,’ and More

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Throw a dart at a map, and you can make a World War II movie set in whatever place you hit. Of course, pretty much any film about the Good War that doesn’t focus on the American (sometimes British) point of view of the conflict will probably seem “random” to the mainstream; one odd side-effect of Hollywood’s Oscar-baity love of the era. Leonardo DiCaprio made a surprise appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday to promote his new climate change documentary Before the Flood. The audience collectively (and understandably) loses their minds, screaming and jumping up and down as the actor walks out in a sharp blue suit. After the screams die down, Leo explains his passionate project and how important it is for people to become aware of the climate change crisis that is threatening our planet. After you stare into his gorgeous eyes in the video above, make sure to check out Before the Flood on YouTube until Nov. 6. Trump International’s response to the existence of “You’ve Been Trumped Too,” director Anthony Baxter’s follow-up to his 2011 documentary “You’ve Been Trumped,” was a lawsuit threat. Baxter’s response to that response is to show his movie for free on Facebook Live tonight at 8 p.m. Est.

“You’ve Trumped Too” follows those affected by Donald Trump’s golf course in Scotland, including a 92-year-old woman named Molly Forbes who claims her water supply was cut off during construction. It received a limited release late last month, and Baxter cites “the bullying” of Trump as his reason for making the film free to watch tonight. [Review] The Ivory Game

3 November 2016 12:38 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

If you went to a Regal Cinema during the month prelude to The Legend of Tarzan‘s release you will know the insane statistics depicting the sharp decline of living elephants throughout the world. Alexander Skarsgård told us about the problem — although I’d be surprised if you weren’t cognizant of the issue, if not the prevalence, beforehand — and the pitch to donate money for their conservation was in full force. Well, Netflix has taken the next step to ensure an even wider range of people acknowledge what could be mass extinction in just fifteen years thanks to their new documentary executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. But don’t think Kief Davidson and Richard Ladkani‘s The Ivory Game is just an all-educational sound-byte-fueled heartstring tug. This thing is feet-on-the-ground investigative journalism.

Their story follows three main activists doing what they can to save the animals as well as »

Newswire: You can now watch Leonardo DiCaprio’s entire climate change documentary online

2 November 2016 12:03 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Scientists have been widely acknowledging climate change as a real and pressing danger to our planet for a while now, but it seems pretty clear that none of us are actually going to do anything about it as long as we’ve got all-day breakfast at McDonald’s and another decade of Marvel movies to look forward to. Thankfully, we’ve got celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio to watch out for us. Not only is he producing a Captain Planet movie, but he and Fisher Stevens also made a climate change documentary called Before The Flood that was screened at President Obama’s South By South Lawn festival earlier this year.

For people who aren’t cool enough to hang out at the White House, though, DiCaprio and National Geographic have uploaded the entire film to YouTube. This gives everyone a chance to learn about how totally screwed we are, but »

MaryAnn’s quick take…

Leonardo DiCaprio’s abashed personal journey to learn about global warming, overcome his pessimism, and find hope that there’s still time to make a difference. I’m “biast” (pro): we need to take serious action on global warming now…

I’m “biast” (con): …but making more documentaries about the subject is not enough

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Are you tired of celebrities getting involved in politics and acting like experts in fields they know nothing about? Leonardo DiCaprio agrees with you! At the beginning of Before the Flood which documents the first two years of his ongoing stint as the Un Messenger of Peace on Climate Change, the actor admits that, despite his longtime philanthropic efforts on environmentalism, he doesn’t know much about climate science and wonders whether the Un made the right choice. And then, after »
