From Titanic to The Revenant: why don’t movie stars learn from their characters?

10 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Leonardo DiCaprio’s experience at the end of Titanic helped him survive The Revenant. The Martian enabled Matt Damon to do what he couldn’t in Interstellar. Look and learn, Domhnall Gleeson

In the famous farewell scene toward the end of Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio treads water while speaking to Kate Winslet, desperately trying to stave off the effects of hypothermia. He lasts about eight minutes, which is probably a record for this sort of thing, as the glacial waters of the north Atlantic in February would normally be expected to kill off even the hardiest soul within three. But eventually the gallant DiCaprio succumbs, and drifts off to his watery sepulchre.

In last year’s The Revenant, DiCaprio had a similar bone-chilling experience, when he was forced to plunge into an icy river in the middle of winter to escape from vengeful Native Americans. The water must have been positively frigid, »

The Flickering Myth Team react…

Yesterday, we got our first look at the Mystical side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the trailer for Doctor Strange [watch it here]. It’s only a teaser, but we got to see a lot of Strange’s new and exciting worlds which will certainly act as a nice pallet cleanser following Captain America: Civil War.

But what did the Flickering Myth writing staff make of it?

Chris Cooper: Now I know what a Nolan Marvel film would look like. A mix between Batman Begins and Inception, with some Interstellar mixed in. Colour me curious.

Aj Black: Loved it. Feels like a superhero movie brewed with Inception. Fantastic. More excited about this than any other superhero film this year.

Rob James Kojder: I know nothing about Doctor Strange, »

Watch Extensive Cinematography Breakdowns For ‘Hail, Caesar!,’ ‘The Hateful Eight,’ ‘Fury Road’ & More

If supercuts featuring a director and — by extension — cinematographer’s predilection for a specific color or camera movement have watered down the field of video essays, today brings a series that reinstates an informative, technical approach to better understand what goes into crafting an image with light. Cinematography Database, coming from Dp Matt Workman, resembles something closer to a visual podcast as he takes anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour to break down each feature.

With a first batch including Robert Richardson‘s The Hateful Eight, Roger Deakins‘ Hail, Caesar!, John Seale‘s Mad Max: Fury Road, Emmanuel Lubezki‘s The Revenant, Matthew Libatique‘s Straight Outta Compton, and Dariusz Wolski‘s The Martian, he uses mostly behind-the-scenes stills to dissect the equipment and lighting techniques at play in each feature. While the series may not widely appeal to those looking to dive into how cinematography conveys the themes of a film, »

The Science of Failure in the Films of Alexander Payne

12 April 2016 11:33 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Following his small-scale, black-and-white drama NebraskaAlexander Payne has jumped to something with quite a large scope. He’s finally underway on production for what’s his biggest film yet, the Matt Damon-led sci-fi drama Downsizing, which is a social satire depicting a man who believes he’ll have a better life if he shrinks himself. Ahead of the shoot, Payne discussed his choice for a leading man. “Among contemporary leading men he is the closest thing we have to an Every Man. We saw it in The Martian particularly. More and more he is assuming the role that say James Stewart and more recently Tom Hanks used to play. At least you can relate to the guy and you can project some of your own fears, yearnings, aspirations onto his face. You understand him,” the director recently told Leo Adam Biga, author of a book on Payne.

8 amazing British sci-fi novels of the 1950s

From Brian Aldiss to Arthur C Clarke, 1950s Britain was rich in fantastic science-fiction novels. Here are 8 of the best...

It seems that every few years somebody announces science fiction is dead. In 2007 it was the turn of Ridley Scott, who then went on to make The Martian, so perhaps these claims should always be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly when we look back over the history of Sf writing over the years and find that it is a genre that is as much defined by current events than by any singular vision of the future.

For that reason, British science fiction in the 1950s was incredible stuff. Anxiety over the powers scientists had unleashed after the dropping the atomic bomb at the end of World War II obsessed many novelists, but so did a sense of despondency at poverty and suffering within a community »

The Huntsman: Winter’s War movie review: snow what?

It’s a prequel and a sequel! It’s got girl powerrr and lady-hating! It’s a mashup of Lord of the Rings and Frozen! It’s all these things, and less. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

I’m “biast” (con): wasn’t crazy about the first film

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It’s a prequel and a sequel! It’s full of girl powerrr and reflexive lady-hating! It’s a parody mashup of Lord of the Rings with Frozen and it’s a longform conceptual fashion shoot! The Huntsman: Winter’s War is all these things, and more, and sometimes less. It’s a story about the horror of child soldiers without the horror. It’s a love-conquers-all story with almost no genuine emotional content at all. It’s a comedy without any actual humor. It’s a movie in which, »
