Michael Keaton To Play Villain In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

He's been Batman already, and Birdman, but now Micheal Keaton is going to try on a different kind of superhero movie role, and one that should get fans plenty excited. Read More: Sony's Standalone 'Spider-Man' Movie Will Feature Marvel Characters Variety reports that the actor is in early talks to play a villain role in Sony and Marvel's "Spider-Man: Homecoming." The solo movie, featuring the relaunched webslinger played by Tom Holland (who will be making his first appearance in "Captain America: Civil War" — our review) already has plenty of rumors swirling around it. Most recently, it was suggested that Vulture would be one of possibly a few villains in the movie. As fans know, Sam Raimi wanted to use the character in "Spider-Man 4" (played by John Malkovich), before the movie fell apart. The character was also rumored at one point for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" but that didn't bear out either. »

'Ain't Them Bodies Saints' Director David Lowery To Direct Live Action 'Peter Pan' For Disney

While audiences will have to wait until later this summer to weigh in on "Pete's Dragon," Disney has already made it clear how they feel about "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" director David Lowery's take on 1977 movie — they love it. And they are looking to keep the director in the fold at the mouse house. Read More: Watch: First Trailer For David Lowery's 'Pete's Dragon' Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, And More Deadline reports that Disney has reupped the "Pete's Dragon" creative team — Lowery and screenwriter Toby Halbrooks — for a live action redo of "Peter Pan." The character has been to the screen plenty of times, notably in Disney's animated 1953 picture, and in Universal's 2004 feature film, and on NBC as part of a recently live musical broadcast on NBC. There was also Steven Spielberg's underrated "Hook" in the 1990s, and Warner Bros.' ill fated attempt last year with "Pan. »

Review: 'Captain America: Civil War' Starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, More

Remarkably outshining both 'Avengers' films in its deployment of superhero pyrotechnics and credible, amped-up character conflict, “Captain America: Civil War” is finally the fully realized team-up movie Marvel has been striving to make all these years. Following their efforts on “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” directors Joe and Anthony Russo exhibit a rock-steady hand as they guide the Avengers through a stripped-down plot pitting former allies Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) against one another. With other heroes rallying around those two poles, the characters face the consequences of their super-powered actions and ultimately examine how their own personal histories influence their heroics. Somehow managing time to introduce both Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and a new version of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) without overstuffing the plot, the filmmakers maintain a consistent focus on their own particular exploration of the "with great power »

Discover The Tactile Cinema Of Steven Spielberg In This 11-Minute Video Essay

There are typically two ways of analyzing a Steven Spielberg film. At least, this is what Vimeo user Ken Provencher argues in his newest video essay, “The Spielberg Touchscreen.” Similar thematic interests, with recurring motifs like parent-child relationships, suburban culture, and important events in American-Jewish history play heavily in each of his films. But through this framework, there are two separate filmmakers that come into play: the escapist, the man who directed blockbusters like the “Indiana Jones” franchise, “E.T.,” “War of the Worlds” and this summer’s “The Bfg,” and the moralist, the man who conquers awards fields with sweeping dramas like “Saving Private Ryan,” “Munich,” “Lincoln” and this past fall’s “Bridge of Spies.” But beyond Spielberg’s name, these two sides rarely overlap — even if they’re both very distinctly associated with the veteran filmmaker. Jared Leto Says He Sent His 'Suicide Squad' Castmates Anal Beads & Used Condoms, David Ayer Talks Reshoots

In case you haven't heard already, Jared Leto went full method for his portrayal of Juggalo Joker in the upcoming "Suicide Squad." And while Daniel Day-Lewis may wear the crown for staying in character and heavily researching his roles, we'll bet he never did anything like this. Speaking with E!, Leto revealed that part of his process in creating the proper tension on set for his character involved sending them anal beads and used condoms, which doesn't sound intense, so much as gross and kinda unhygienic. “I did a lot of things to create a dynamic, to create an element of surprise, of spontaneity, and to really break down any kind of walls that may be there,” he explained. “The Joker is somebody who doesn’t really respect things like personal space or boundaries.” Read More: David Ayer Clarifies 'Suicide Squad' Reshoots, Says Warner Bros. First Look: Emma Stone And Steve Carell in Billie Jean King Tennis Movie 'Battles Of The Sexes'

Cameras have started rolling on "Battle Of The Sexes," and the first look of Emma Stone and Steve Carell in the picture, about the historic tennis match between the 29-year-old, number two-ranked Billie Jean King, and the retired, boorish champ Bobby Riggs, has arrived. Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Alan Cumming, Sarah Silverman and more join Stone and Carell in the film, and given the chemistry the lead duo had in "Crazy Stupid Love,” this seems like a solid ensemble all around. "Battle Of The Sexes" is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ("Little Miss Sunshine") and was penned by the talented Simon Beaufoy, known for writing Danny Boyle classics "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours.” Read More: 5 Films About Real-Life Sporting Controversies The 1973 "Battles Of The Sexes" tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs captured the imagination of not only tennis enthusiasts, but of the »

Brian De Palma To Direct Thriller 'The Truth And Other Lies'

It's been four years since Brian De Palma's last film, "Passion," but it's not been for lack of trying. "Happy Valley," set to star Al Pacino, fell apart at HBO, and last year it was announced that De Palma was in pre-production on the thriller "Lights Out," but that also seems to have gone away. But a new project has popped up for the director, and let's hope this one sticks. Read More: Retrospective: The Films Of Brian De Palma Deadline reports that De Palma will helm an adaptation of Sascha Arango's novel "The Truth And Other Lies." The black comedy, which will have a script from the author, follows a man, whose wife secretly authors his best-selling novels, who can't let go of his mistress. The 10 Best Cannes Film Festival Competition Lineups Ever

There may not be a red carpet or a bevy of Hollywood stars present, just a bunch of coughing journalists, but tomorrow will see one of the more momentous events in the cinema calendar: the announcement of the Official Selection for the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The general hubbub of anticipation has ramped up in recent weeks (here's our own 20 Films We Hope To See In Cannes feature), with speculation and rumor flying back and forth about everything from the readiness of certain titles, to the health of certain directors, to completely spurious fabrications about biases and beefs that might prevent the selection committee, headed again by Festival President Thierry Frémaux, from picking certain films. Tomorrow will see an end to, or at least a temporary ceasefire on, all that (you can read about the most recent speculations/confirmations here), but we will get to prematurely judge how "stacked" a lineup »

Watch: Make A Pledge With The New Trailer For 'Sworn Virgin' Starring Alba Rohrwacher

Cultural traditions, gender dynamics, and sexuality intersect in fascinating ways in Laura Bispuri's "Sworn Virgin." It's a film we saw on the festival circuit last year, and while it didn't make much of a wave, it's worth seeking this "tiny, understated and very authentic" film out.  Read More: Berlin Review: 'Sworn Virgin' With Alba Rohrwacher, A Subtle, Compassionate Study Of Gender & Culture Starring Alba Rohrwacher ("Hungry Hearts"), the story is set in rural Albania, where tradition requires that women, who already have few rights, unquestioningly submit to their men. However, a woman can escape this fate if she becomes a "burrnesh," but it requires becoming celibate, in addition to taking a man's name, and dressing as a man as well. Here's the official synopsis: Sworn Virgin follows a young woman named Hana who lives in an Albanian village ruled by men. She takes an oath of eternal virginity to live as a “sworn. »

Louis C.K. Says He’s Scrapped His Next Movie & There Will Be No More ‘Louie’ On FX For Now

Comedian Louis C.K. recently pulled a Rihanna and Kanye West with his new show “Horace And Pete”: It arrived finished, out of nowhere, and as a total surprise to all his fans. But he didn’t make the show through a network, paid for it out of his own pocket, and then just quietly slapped it on his website without much promotion (it was really just up to fans and journalists to notice, and of course they did). A recent guest on "The Howard Stern Show," the comedian didn’t fully explain why, but in the process of describing the evolution of “Horace And Pete,” C.K. explains how he essentially blew up his own creative life as a means to create something new. In the process, he canceled his next movie and decided to drop his Emmy-winning FX show “Louie.” At least for now. Read More: Louis C.K. »

Watch: Fly Through The Evolution Of Superman In 13-Minute Retrospective Video

For many cinemagoers out there today, Superman is nothing more than a brooding hunk of muscle caught up in the clunky CG world of Zack Snyder. While the filmmaker is only two films deep into his Justice League saga, he has managed to redefine the Man of Steel for the modern super-serious superhero era. The only problem is Snyder’s new iteration is less Christopher Nolan and more self-serious god with a grimace. Read More: 'Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice',' 'Daredevil,' And The Problem Of Tone In Superhero Stories But, while this writer may have struggled with “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” Superman has a much greater legacy than two bloated films. In fact, the Last Son of Krypton has been a staple of cinema for well over 80 years, first hitting the screen just a few short years after his comic book debut in 1938. Since then, »

Watch: The Rage Is Real In 3 Clips From Jodie Foster's ‘Money Monster' Starring George Clooney

While it’s arguably a few years too late — though movies do take a long time to make — we are finally seeing an echo of the rage and frustration that came out of the 2008 financial collapse where the U.S. government bailed out the banks for their own reckless mistakes. It’s the same anger you've seen in Bernie Sanders’ campaign and rallying cries about the lack of Wall Street oversight. We’ve seen “The Big Short” as a Best Picture Oscar contender tackle this subject, seen it on a more personal and human level in “99 Homes” and now we’re seeing yet another iteration of these frustrations in “Money Monster,” a thriller from director Jodie Foster starring George Clooney. The movie essentially centers on a loudmouth TV talking head expert on finance who is held hostage by a man enraged by his own personal misfortunes. Here’s the official synopsis: In the real-time, »

'23 Jump Street' & 'Men in Black' Crossover Movie Gets A Title

What was once a harebrained lark of an idea is now an actual movie: yes, the franchise crossover of "21 Jump Street" and "Men In Black" is real and happening. And now it has a title. While their "Spider-Man: Homecoming" news hogged the spotlight, Sony had more to share about their upcoming slate, including the name of that aforementioned mashup: "MIB 23." James Bobin ("The Muppets," "Alice Through The Looking Glass") will direct the movie, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller still keeping their hands in the mix as producers. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will be back to reprise their roles, with production slated to kick off in June, but the connection to the "Men In Black" series seems to be in name only, with younger actors stepping in for Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. I'm still not sold on that concept, but then again, no one really figured "21 Jump Street" would turn out. »

Comments By J.J. Abrams & Todd Phillips Highlight Hollywood Divide About The Screening Room's Premium VOD Plan

Ever since Sean Parker's startup The Screening Room was announced last month, with plans to offer day-and-date blockbuster releases for viewers at home for $50, there has been lots of debate about what this could mean for the future of moviegoing. Surprisingly, Peter Jackson, J.J. Abrams, and Steven Spielberg have been among those who support the idea, while lining up against it has been James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, The National Association Of Theater Owners, and art house cinemas, who all see the plan as a real threat. And naturally, the conversation has continued this week at CinemaCon, where the divide in the industry was clearly felt. On Team VOD, Abrams sees The Screening Room as a chance for the industry to finally get ahead of the digital curve. “Much has been said of other technologies that threaten the theater experience — and of course I am no expert, and I’m »

“I’d Love To Play This Woman Again, Definitely”: Charlize Theron Is Ready For More Furiosa

Since the release of "Mad Max: Fury Road" last summer, the underlying subtext has been that Charlize Theron had no interest in coming back, given the rocky time she had shooting with Tom Hardy (something she recently elaborated on). However, time heals all wounds, and the actress has made it clear she's ready for more Furiosa if George Miller will have her. “I would love to bring her back to life! Are you kidding?” she told MTV at the MTV Awards. “I can see how people are kind of responding to her. I look at my little girl and I’m like, ’yeah, I’d love to play this woman again, definitely.' ” Of course, whether or not that will happen remains to be seen. Last fall, Miller said he had two sequel scripts for 'Fury Road' finished, but indicated that the story didn't involve Furiosa. But then, earlier this year, »

'99 Homes' Director Ramin Bahrani To Helm 'Fahrenheit 451' For HBO

Ray Bradbury's classic "Fahrenheit 451" was both perfectly of its time and chillingly ahead of its time. While books aren't literally being burned in the street, it speaks to the culture at the moment that we have an annual Banned Books Week. And with knowledge increasingly politicized (see the ongoing battle of evolution vs. creationism in classrooms), Bradbury's book still resonates, and now it's getting ready for a brand new cinematic treatment. HBO has tapped Ramin Bahrani ("99 Homes," "At Any Price") to write and direct a new adaptation of the novel. Francois Truffaut previously brought his vision of Bradbury's work to cinemas in 1966, telling the story of Guy Montag, a fireman tasked with burning contraband material, who suddenly has a crisis of conscience. Here's the book synopsis:  Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. »

Ben Affleck Confirmed To Direct Warner Bros. Solo Batman Movie, Will Be Released In Next 5 Years

It's been a long, often dull road to this moment. We've known for a while now that Ben Affleck and DC Comics COO Geoff Johns were co-writing a script for a solo Batman at Warner Bros. And last month we knew it was in the can. However, the ongoing variable has been whether or not Affleck will direct and reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. His agent noted that he's only contracted to do the next two "Justice League" movies, but it appears that after much thought, Affleck will indeed direct the superhero movie. While there are no exact quotes, multiple sources reveal that last night at CinemaCon that WB head Kevin Tsujihara confirmed that Affleck would direct the movie, and it would be released in the next five years. It was only last week that the studio set untitled DC films for release in 2018 and 2019, so it's probably a »

Solo Spider-Man Movie Will Be Titled ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ Logo Revealed, And Vulture Rumored

Well, the rumors are true. After eagle-eyed fans spotted Sony buying up domain names like “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” tonight that title has been confirmed. Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman and the new Peter Parker, Tom Holland, announced the title of their standalone Spider-Man movie this evening at CinemaCon in Vegas. Co-starring, so far, Zendaya Coleman and Marisa Tomei, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” will hit theaters July 7, 2017. Introduced in “Captain America: Civil War,” this week Marvel’s Kevin Feige reiterated the movie will have a John Hughes-like vibe. What villains will we see? Feige was vague. ”The great thing about the Spidey characters is that there are a lot of them. A lot of them have been in other films. A lot of them from the comics haven’t been in other films yet. We’ll do a combination of both,” he told Fandango. Though if the rumor mill is as »
