The Secret Life of Pets beats Tarzan to the top of the tree at UK box office

11 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Family-friendly animation still at No 1 ahead of Lord Greystoke, the Now You See Me crew and Ab Fab’s still fizzing Edina and Patsy

With back-to-back declines of just 20% and 24%, The Secret Life of Pets has held up remarkably well, reaching £22.3m after 19 days. It will soon overtake Zootropolis (£23.8m) to become the biggest animated film of the year so far – a title it may concede to Pixar’s Finding Dory after it opens at the end of the month.

Second Opinion – Now You See Me 2 (2016)

10 July 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Now You See Me 2, 2016.

Directed by Jon M. Chu.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Dave Franco, Woody Harrelson, Lizzy Caplan, Morgan Freeman, Daniel Radcliffe and Michael Caine.

Synopsis:

The Four Horsemen resurface and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet.

2013’s Now You See Me was a surprisingly entertaining popcorn film with a ludicrous plot and obvious twists and turns. The sequel is no different when it comes to delivering a highly stupid and implausible script but it is a really fun film that’s easy to watch and entertaining as long as you don’t think too much about it.

This time around the Horsemen have been in hiding for a year after their dramatic getaway at the end of the last film. When they stage their big comeback it doesn’t go entirely to plan and they end up »

Now You See Me 2 review – probably best you don’t

10 July 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A second helping of the magicians-turned-criminal-masterminds wheeze proves a tricky sell

Cinema as an art form leans on deception and misdirection just as heavily as any stage magician. But a curious thing happens when you try and show performed magic in a movie – the illusion is cancelled out and the mystery evaporates. Sleight of hand means nothing when the real magic happens in post-production. This is just one of the problems with this sequel to the conjurors-turned-criminals caper movie, Now You See Me. Called out of hiding to steal a computer chip (handily the exact size and shape as a playing card), the Four Horsemen ( a team of maverick magicians) devise a needlessly complicated series of bluffs and double-bluffs, which is then unpicked during huge chunks of shouty, self-congratulatory exposition. By which point, the audience is longing for someone to saw the cast in half. Permanently.

Now You See Me 2 movie review: now you don’t

8 July 2016 11:19 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

The delicately balanced foolishness of Now You See Me gives way to impossibly supernatural magic tricks aimed at thwarting the least menacing villain ever. I’m “biast” (pro): liked the first movie

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It was delicately balanced foolishness that allowed Now You See Me to work. No such luck this time out: the second outing with the Four Horsemen, street magicians turned modern-day Robin Hoods, starts out dumb and illogical and rapidly descends into the fantastically idiotic.

Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Woody Harrelson (Triple 9), and Dave Franco (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) are joined by a new “girl Horseman,” Lizzy Caplan (The Night Before); Isla Fisher wisely chose not to return, perhaps because she realized that no matter how many painfully wannabe-ironic jokes the script makes about the token girl, “the »

‘Kung Fu Panda’ Knocks ‘Zootopia’ Off Top-Selling Disc Perch

It took another animated family feature with a huge box office haul to dislodge Walt Disney Studios’ “Zootopia” from the top spot on the national home video sales charts.

Kung Fu Panda 3,” the third installment in the series about bumbling panda Po and his mastery of the martial arts to save his panda peeps from adversity, bowed at No. 1 on both the Npd VideoScan overall disc sales chart and the Blu-ray Disc-only sales chart.

The DreamWorks Animation film, distributed by 20th Century Fox, earned $143.5 million in theaters and once again features an all-star voice cast that includes Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman and Bryan Cranston (of “Breaking Bad” fame).

“Zootopia,” the animated “buddy cop” film about a rabbit cop and a red fox con that earned $340.8 million in U.S. theaters, slid to No. 2 on both charts after three years at the top.

Now You See Me 2 Review

4 July 2016 1:36 PM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

With a cast that included Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman, one hell of a hook (stage magicians pull off daring heists as part of their shows), and some great visuals, 2013’s Now You See Me was a refreshing slice of entertainment that enjoyed massive success at the box office. Quadrupling it’s budget was always a sign that a sequel would come our way, and here we are. Now You See Me 2 sees the Horsemen (Eisenberg, Harrelson, Dave Franco and newcomer Lizzie Caplan) gone to ground after the events of the first film left them wanted fugitives. When their secretive handler Dylan Rhodes (Ruffalo) assigns them the task of exposing a corrupt businessman, they find themselves getting a taste of their own medicine, captured and forced to steal a revolutionary computer chip for reclusive technology prodigy Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe). Batman v Superman supercut tracks The Dark Knight’s Kill Count

One of the many controversial aspects of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was director Zack Snyder’s decision to overlook the “no kill policy” which has become synonymous with The Dark Knight in recent years. Ben Affleck’s Batman dispatches a number of bad guys throughout the course of the movie – 21 bad guys in fact, according to Mr Sunday Movies, who has put together a supercut featuring all of Batfleck’s kills. ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Tops Foreign Box Office

3 July 2016 1:33 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Independence Day: Resurgence” topped the foreign box office, racking up $40.2 million from 64 overseas markets.

Fox’s alien invasion sequel sputtered in its domestic release, making $72.6 million over its first ten days. By way of contrast, the first “Independence Day” racked up $135.4 million over the same period, and that was 20 years ago. But foreign audiences are helping to make up some of the shortfall.

The science-fiction thriller has earned $66.1 million in China, $13.5 million in the United Kingdom, $11.5 million in Mexico and $10.3 million in South Korea. There are still several foreign territories left to open, including Japan, Germany and France. Globally, “Independence Day: Resurgence” has generated $249.7 million. The film brings back original director Roland Emmerich, along with cast members Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, but the producers failed to convince Will Smith to return to defend Earth from extraterrestrial attack.

Disney’s “Finding Dory” swam to second place, adding $34.4 million to its haul. »
