'Jungle Book' Repeats, 'Huntsman' Falls On His Axe and 'Zootopia' Tops $900M Worldwide

13 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The Jungle Book remained in first place in its second weekend by a large margin over the weekend runner up as it tripled the opening weekend for Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War. Meanwhile, Pantelion's Compadres finished among the weekend top ten while Roadside's release of A Hologram for the King finds itself in a battle for tenth position. With an estimated $60.8 million, Disney's The Jungle Book dropped only 41.1%, the fourth smallest second weekend drop for a film that opened over $100 million as its domestic cume now climbs to over $191 million. Internationally the film took in an additional $96 million this weekend as its global take is now over $528 million, fifth largest for the year so far. In second place, Universal's prequel The Huntsman: Winter's War struggled out of the gate. With an estimated $20 million it brought in only 36% of the opening weekend total of its 2012 predecessor Snow White and the Huntsman. »

‘Jungle Book’ Tops Foreign Box Office With $96 Million

9 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Jungle Book” dominated the global box office, racking up $96 million this weekend and pushing the Disney film’s worldwide haul to $528.5 million.

The live-action version of the Rudyard Kipling stories played particularly well in China, where it has earned $97 million, and in India, where it has become the highest-grossing Hollywood release with $28.8 million. India tends to be dominated by Bollywood releases, so it’s rare for Western films to do big business in the country.

Universal’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is trying to bolster its revenues overseas after falling flat in its domestic debut. The fantasy adventure started playing in select foreign territories earlier this month. It added 37 additional territories to its footprint, including China where it opened to $11.1 million. The $115 million film is a prequel to 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman.” It earned $32.1 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its global total to $100.3 million, and »

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Premiere: ‘The Red Woman’ Breaks from the Books with Style

3 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This post contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 6, Episode 1, titled “The Red Woman.” See where we left off with our Season 5 finale recap.

Game of Thrones” has never been afraid of spilling blood, and the Season 6 premiere is no exception — even as Jon Snow lies dead in the courtyard of Castle Black, at the other end of Westeros the Sand Snakes are living up to their deadly legacy, with Ellaria Sand and the daughters of Prince Oberyn quickly dispatching the last of the Martells, murdering Prince Doran and his heir Trystane to assume power in Dorne for themselves.

The Dorne storyline often felt like an excuse for narrative wheel-spinning last season, with Jaime and Bronn’s expedition to retrieve Myrcella proving to be one of the rare deviations from George R. R. Martin’s books that didn’t quite land, so choosing to trim the fat from that plot »

Game of Thrones: Here's the deal with Melisandre

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones, Season 6, 'The Red Woman' follow. It's back! At long last. And while Game of Thrones dropped some interesting reveals by the close of the episode, it left the show and book's biggest question left unanswered. So, we'll be free to speculate about the ultimate fate of Jon Snow for at least one more week. However, we were granted a fascinating look at Melisandre's true face, which is very, very, very old. The Red Pristess' age is something that book readers have been talking about for some time, as there are several hints in the text that she is either immortal or very near.  In the world of the show, Melisandre famously survived poison and has frequently faced what appears to be mortal danger with no fear. Additionally, as Vanity Fair points out, the show's creators as well as the actress who plays the Red Priestess, »

Review: 'Game of Thrones' sets the season 6 table with 'The Red Woman'

2 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Game of Thrones is back for a new season, and I've got a review of the premiere coming up just as soon as I demand some mutton... "Seeing a beautiful woman naked for the first time, what is better than that?" -Khal Moro Someone may need to slip Khal Moro their HBO Now login to see if his feelings on this issue have changed after watching all of "The Red Woman," which ends with us truly seeing its title character naked for the first time. The revelation that Melisandre isn't nearly as youthful or lovely as she appears was a great shock — and, because the episode first presented us with the better-preserved nude version, a case of the show getting to have its sexy cake and eat it, too — at the end of a premiere that, by design, didn't have room for many other surprises. Other than Brienne and Podrick »

Steven Seagal Plans Production Venture in Thailand

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

1990s action film star, Steven Seagal (“Under Seige,” “On Deadly Ground”) has unveiled plans to launch a production company in Thailand and produce at least two movies in the country.

Seagal last week visited the parliament building in Bangkok and held meetings with members of the National Reform Steering Assembly. The Nrsa is an advisory body reporting to the National Council for Peace and Order, the official name for the military government that seized power in 2014.

Seagal did not provide details of the company or the planned movies, though hinted that they would each use different locations and feature Thailand’s ‘muay thai’ form of martial arts.

Alongkorn Ponlaboot, Nrsa VP, said that the venture could boost the country’s creative economy, notably its film industry, economy and tourism, all of which were in line with the Nrsa’s reform plans.

Seagal stressed his veneration of Thailand’s King Bhumibol and his own Buddhist beliefs. »

'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Premiere: TV Review

4 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

In retrospect, the fifth season of Game of Thrones was neither as so-so and disappointing as I often felt it was when episodes were in progress, nor as spectacular as the show's semi-random across-the-board Emmy coronation indicated. The lengthy "Previously on ..." reel preceding Sunday's sixth-season premiere was a reminder of the mixture of great stuff (anything involving Cersei, Tyrion, Arya, Brienne and the rise of the White Walkers) and inconsistent (most things involving Meereen, Dorne and an over-reliance on underexplored rape themes) we received in 2015. With Thrones finally moving ahead of George

'Game of Thrones': Liam Cunningham Weighs in on Season 6 Premiere's "Remarkable" Ending

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from the season six premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones.] Winter is coming, but few people in Westeros are preparing for the storm. Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) is one of the rare exceptions, more aware than most of the ice-cold menace known as the White Walkers. The Onion Knight, a mainstay on HBO's Game of Thrones beginning with the second season, knows the true enemy facing the Seven Kingdoms — if not quite how to handle the threat. In Davos' defense, the man has a lot on his plate. First, he lost Stannis (Stephen Dillane) and Shireen Baratheon (Kerry Ingram),

‘Game of Thrones’ Premiere: Stars Weigh in on Shocking Melisandre Reveal

This post contains spoilers for the “Game of Thrones” Season 6 Premiere, titled “The Red Woman.” Refresh your memory of where we left off with our Season 5 finale recap.

The “Game of Thrones” Season 6 premiere featured plenty of memorable moments — including the long-awaited reunion between Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), after the warrior finally won Sansa’s trust by saving her and Theon (Alfie Allen) from the Boltons’ soldiers — but executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss saved the best for last, ending the episode by letting the audience spy on the Red Priestess Melisandre in a rare moment of vulnerability — shedding her façade of beauty and youth to reveal an old, fragile woman before she settled down to sleep for the night.

China Box Office: ‘Jungle Book’ Holds Ahead of ‘Huntsman,’ ‘Sassy Girl’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A host of new releases this weekend failed to make any impact on “The Jungle Book”’s comfortable lead at the top of the Chinese box office. “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” opened in third spot with a $10.3 million take that was roughly half the size of its debut in North America.

In a slow weekend, “The Jungle Book” topped the chart on every day of the session. It had a narrow lead on Friday, but doubled that score on Saturday and Sunday, confirming its appeal to family audiences. That gave it a $29.8 million weekend and an $99.5 million cumulative after 10 days, according to data from Ent Group.

Youth skewing romantic drama “Yesterday Once More” came second throughout and finished the weekend with $14.7 million after three days.

“My New Sassy Girl,” a Chinese-Korean sequel to decade old Korean hit “My Sassy Girl” was a disappointment. It attracted only $3.81 million in three days. »

‘Waitress’ Broadway Review: Sara Bareilles, Jessie Mueller Bake Up a Musical Storm

5 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Keri Russell looks as though she wouldn’t spend her lunch hour, much less a full work week, at Joe’s Pie Diner in the 2007 film “Waitress.” The actress does, however, bring real spine to the role of a put-upon, pregnant waitress who finds herself under siege by a beast of a boss on the job and a thug of a husband at home. Russell prevents the film from turning into a pity party. To her credit, Jessie Mueller doesn’t look like a glamorous movie star slumming in a pink-collar role in the new musical “Waitress,” based on Adrienne Shelly’s movie, »

'Waitress': Theater Review

Jessie Mueller won a lead actress Tony Award two years ago playing the title role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. So it's fitting that her return to Broadway, with perhaps an even more transcendent performance, should be in Waitress, the thoroughly charming musical theater debut of composer-lyricist Sara Bareilles, a descendent from the same line of emotionally empowering singer-songwriters of which King is now a doyenne. "Sugar" is the first word in the show, and this adaptation of the 2007 indie film about a Deep South diner server who dreams of baking herself a better life doesn't
