See Emma Stone and Steve Carrell as Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs In 'Battle of the Sexes'

just now

One of the things audiences look for in a biopic and other movies based on a true story is authenticity. They want to see actors transformed into the famous people they're playing. Sometimes they also favor exact replicas of actual photographs and film and TV scenes. Fox Searchlight aims for full interest with its first look, via The Hollywood Reporter, at the upcoming drama Battle of the Sexes. The movie, set in 1973, stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as tennis legends Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. The two faced off in a monumental, highly watched match, and the above picture is from a scene where they announce the event in a press conference. The well-documented appearance of King, who was ranked second for women players at the time, and the then-retired Riggs, can be...

From Birdman to The Vulture? 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' Wants Michael Keaton as a Villain

just now

There has been a lot of Spider-Man news hitting this week, so let's just run down an order of events and see what kind of a conclusion seems reasonable. 1. Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige tells us the next Spider-Man movie will have characters we've never seen on the big screen: "The great thing about the Spidey characters is that there are a lot of them. A lot of them have been in other films. A lot of them from the comics haven’t been in other films yet. We’ll do a combination of both." 2. Sony confirms the rumor that the next solo movie will be called Spider-Man: Homecoming. 3. Bmd reports a rumor they heard that Spider-Man: Homecoming will have The Vulture as one of its villains. 4. Variety reports former Batman Michael Keaton is...

Samuel L. Jackson on When Nick Fury Will Return to the Marvel Movies

just now

It's been awhile since we've seen Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury show up in a Marvel movie. Well, okay it's been one year, though his presence in Avengers: Age of Ultron is pretty minimal and not very integral to the plot, like he was in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Fans may be bummed to hear that Fury isn't in Civil War, but when we caught up with Jackson at CinemaCon, where he was promoting this summer's The Legend of Tarzan, he clued us in to when we'll see the eye patch-wearin' former S.H.I.E.L.D. leader back with his old friends. "I think I'm in Avengers 3 and 4, but I'm not in Civil War," Jackson says, confirming Fury will be back for the two-part Avengers: Infinity War, which kicks off in 2018 and concludes in...

New 'Godzilla Resurgence' Trailer Stomps All Over Japan

Fans of 2014's Godzilla are going to have to wait for director Gareth Edwards to get done with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story before he can get started on his next Godzilla movie, which is currently scheduled for a June 8, 2018 release. But that doesn't mean we all have to wait another two years to see the giant monster rampage all over a city. Godzilla Resurgence is here to save the day...by destroying everything! Granted this movie from Japan's Toho Company has absolutely nothing to do with the story continuity of the American Godzilla, but we're guessing most people don't get excited for any new Godzilla movies because of their dense, intricate narratives or to explore the inner lives of their human characters. People just want to see giant monsters wreck...

Steven Spielberg and Mark Rylance Kick It Up to Four Movies With 'Ready Player One'

It took 24 years for Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford to make four movies together. It took 17 years for him to make four with Tom Hanks. It will only take 2 years for Spielberg to make four movies with Mark Rylance. Something must have seriously clicked between the two on the set of Bridge of Spies because Rylance has become his go-to guy for crucial supporting roles. Rylance went from that cold war drama (which would win him an Oscar)  to The Bfg, and then just the other day it was revealed that he would be one of the stars of Spielberg's The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara. But before they even make that movie together, Rylance is sliding into Spielberg's current production, Ready Player One. The futuristic sci-fi movie is about an eccentric billionaire who...

Spider-Man title revealed As previously rumored, Sony dropped the official title of their upcoming Spider-Man movie during its presentation, revealing Spider-Man: Homecoming to be it (see new logo above).  "Throughout the story Peter is trying to find his true identity and where he fits into the world," Tom Holland told the CinemaCon crowd. Original 'Star Wars' Trilogy Returning to Theaters This Summer

Did you see Star Wars during its original theatrical release? The movie opened in just 32 theaters on May 25, 1977, and was an instant success, inspiring long lines -- some of us remember waiting for up to four hours on the first Saturday of its release --and soon expanded into many more locations. The original run officially ended on July 20, 1978, but the first rerelease began the very next day and the movie remained in theaters until early November 1978. It returned to theaters for a limited run on August 15, 1979, in advance of The Empire Strikes Back, which smashed into theaters in May 1980, and returned again on April 10, 1981, with a notable addition in the opening crawl: "Episode IV -- A New Hope." Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope - Opening Crawl on Disney...

Watch: First 'Doctor Strange' Trailer Introduces a New Way to Save Lives

The first teaser trailer for Marvel's Doctor Strange just debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, introduced by its star, Benedict Cumberbatch, and it looks amazing. Near the end, Cumberbatch says two words that are probably key to the whole movie, but before that his presence as the titular character is felt in every frame as he strides through a variety of settings, both mundane and fantastical. What's even more surprising, though, is the appearance of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, a master who may be ready to teach Doctor Strange a thing or two. We also catch glimpses of Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and some spectacular visual effects. Watch the teaser below. Marvel’s Doctor Strange will open in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Today in Movie Culture: Alternate Ending to 'The Jungle Book,' the Inquisitiveness of Luke Skywalker and More

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Movie Takedown of the Day: In anticipation of the live-action remake, Honest Trailers pokes fun at the bare necessities of Disney's animated version of The Jungle Book, including all new song parodies:   Alternate Ending of the Day: See how the animated version of The Jungle Book -- and presumably the new live-action remake -- should have ended, quite quickly:   Supercut of the Day: Luke Skywalker is a very inquisitive character, and this montage of just him asking questions throughout the first Star Wars emphasizes this part of his personality:   Cosplay of the Day: This family cosplay photo depicting a scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens almost...

Ellen DeGeneres's Talk Show Was Basically the 'Finding Dory' Casting Couch

Pixar is known for their film literacy, evidenced in all their homages to classic and contemporary cinema, but apparently they're also heavily influenced by television. Just look at the casts of Toy Story and A Bug's Life and "you can tell what was on TV at the time," says studio staple Andrew Stanton. And now it's the same with his latest, Finding Dory, with its inclusion of multiple actors from Modern Family among its voice cast (never mind it also features two stars of The Wire, which went off the air eight years ago). One woman's television presence has been particularly influential to the casting of Finding Dory, as well as its predecessor, Finding Nemo. The first movie, released back in 2003, originally was to have a male sidekick for Marlin...

Kevin Feige Calls 'Black Panther' a "Sweeping" Movie That Will Show Off the Wonder of Wakanda

12 April 2016 8:00 PM, PDT

Captain America: Civil War has to pull off possibly the hardest Marvel mission yet. It not only has to work as a solo Captain America character story, but it also has to be a team movie with stakes so big they threaten to fracture the Marvel cinematic universe as we know it. They can't do that last part without bringing in the largest number of characters yet for a non-Avengers movie, but not only is it basically a role call for everyone we know so far (minus a few exceptions like Thor), it's also introducing us to two major characters who will also be getting their own solo movies in the not too distant future: Black Panther and Spider-Man. One thing Marvel Studios does incredibly well is keep an eye on what's just around the corner, which is why at a recent Captain...

New 'A Monster Calls' Trailer Introduces Us To 2016's Other Friendly Giant Movie

12 April 2016 6:30 PM, PDT

Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War is the cinematic rivalry everyone has been focused on this year. They're both two enormous, spectacle-packed movies about superheroes being forced into a scenario where their differing ideologies send them to blows. Even beyond the normal DC Comics and Marvel divide, the comparisons between the two are inevitable. But there's another smaller scale (though still CGI heavy) movie rivalry brewing between two 2016 movies that look like they're playing in very similar sandboxes. We're talking about Steven Spielberg's The Bfg and J.A. Bayona's A Monster Calls. Both movies are about young kids who have experienced loss and death too early in life. Both see those kids processing that loss through a world of...

Why 'Story of Your Life' May Be the Year's Breakout Sci-fi Movie

12 April 2016 3:00 PM, PDT

If you're not at all familiar with CinemaCon, it's this annual convention for theater owners in Las Vegas and kind of like a mini Comic-Con, just without the cosplay and wild fan-related outbursts. What it does have in common with Comic-Con is its footage presentations, and this year all the major studios are in Vegas with a preview of their upcoming slates. We'll be reporting on what we see and hear throughout the week, beginning with Paramount Pictures, who opened the convention with a presentation that included films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Ben-Hur, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Robert Zemeckis' Allied, Denzel Washington's Fences and our most anticipated of all these, Story of Your Life. (Yes, Star Trek Beyond was noticeably...

Steven Spielberg Sets 'The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara' to Direct Before 'Indiana Jones 5'

12 April 2016 1:30 PM, PDT

After Steven Spielberg's acclaimed historical drama Lincoln (above) opened in theaters late in 2012, the filmmaker decided not to move forward with his planned adaptation of action epic Robopocalypse. He then agreed to direct American Sniper, though he dropped out of that project in August 2013. Eventually, however, Spielberg moved on to Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, and since then he's been on a roll. Bridge of Spies received six Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and Mark Rylance won the Oscar for best supporting actor. After the film wrapped production last year, Spielberg moved on quickly to The Bfg, an adaptation of Roald Dahl's fantasy story for children that also features Rylance; it's due for release on July 1. While The Bfg is...
