Watch the Chilling Teaser Trailer For Sundance Hit 'The Birth of a Nation'

15 April 2016 12:00 PM, PDT

"The Birth of a Nation" captivated audiences at the Sundance Film Festival and set a record when it was sold to Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million. The movie, which has been compared to "12 Years a Slave," is set to open during awards season this fall, and now has a new teaser trailer.

The teaser is more of a mood-setter than an outline of the plot, which is based on true events during the slavery era. Writer/director/star Nate Parker plays Nat Turner, a literate slave who is also a preacher. His master (Armie Hammer) directs him to quell unrest among his fellow slaves, but Nat ends up orchestrating an uprising.

Set to Nina Simone's haunting cover of "Strange Fruit," the teaser is stirring — it's easy to see why the movie won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance. And just as the movie won acclaim from the festival circuit, »

'Fear the Walking Dead' Renewed for Season 3

15 April 2016 10:00 AM, PDT

AMC will continue to double down on its zombie drama, and has renewed "Fear the Walking Dead" for a third season.

"Fear," which just debuted its sophomore season on April 10, will return for an additional 16 episodes sometime in 2017.

"What Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman have invented in 'Fear The Walking Dead' is to be applauded. Watching Los Angeles crumble through the eyes of our characters and seeing each make decisions and try to figure out the rules of their new world – it's fresh, eerie and compelling and we're all in for the ride," said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, in a statement. "As Victor Strand observed, 'The only way to survive a mad world is to embrace the madness.' We thank the millions of fans for embracing this mad world and look forward to sailing far into the future."

Caitriona Balfe Misfires Big Time in Tense 'Money Monster' Sneak Peek

15 April 2016 9:00 AM, PDT

Save Sassenach! George Clooney and Julia Roberts are the main stars of director Jodie Foster's new hostage thriller "Money Monster," but this exclusive clip puts "Outlander" star Caitriona Balfe in the line of fire ... or at least her face on a screen is in danger.

The financial crisis story plays out in real-time, and this clip shows a scene where an angry investor named Kyle (Jack O'Connell) has already taken over the TV studio where "Money Monster" host Lee Gates (George Clooney) and his producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) were filming a show. We see a piece of the tense standoff, which is also airing live to millions of viewers. Balfe plays Diane Lester, head of PR for a company whose stock has bottomed. Apparently she says the wrong thing to Kyle, 'cause he shoots the monitor while she's speaking. Then Diane, clearly shaken, says the wrong thing again, »

AMC Theatres Won't Allow Texting After Online Backlash to Proposal

15 April 2016 8:45 AM, PDT

The CEO of AMC Entertainment caused a stir this week when he suggested that the AMC Theatres chain could soon allow texting during movies in order to cater to a millennial audience. Now, following an online uproar, that proposal has been definitively dropped.

The hubbub began when new AMC CEO Adam Aron told Variety that the theater chain wanted to attract more younger viewers, and was considering devoting specific sections of screenings -- or even entire auditoriums -- to texting devotees.

"When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow," Aron told the trade. "You can't tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That's not how they live their life."

While the CEO acknowledged that there would have to be certain ground rules in place for such a proposal to succeed, since the »

'Game of Thrones' May End After Two Shorter Seasons

15 April 2016 7:20 AM, PDT

Season six of "Game of Thrones" still hasn't premiered yet, but showrunners are already mapping out the series's end -- and it may be a shorter goodbye than fans would like.

In an interview with Variety, "Thrones" executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said that their current vision for how the show should end entails two more seasons after the upcoming sixth, but only 13 episodes between them. Season seven would have seven episodes, they said, while season eight (the potential final season) would have six, down from the usual 10 that the show has produced each season so far.

"I think we're down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We're heading into the final lap," Benioff told the trade. "That's the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that's what we're looking at."

Variety also spoke to HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, who confirmed that he had »

James Cameron Claims There Will Be Four 'Avatar' Sequels Now, and They Have (Alleged) Release Dates

14 April 2016 1:00 PM, PDT

There's no denying the success of "Avatar," James Cameron's groundbreaking 2009 blockbuster, which still holds the record as the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, with a whopping $2.79 billion in the bank. But its long-planned sequels have been anything but successful so far: An ambitious shooting schedule has still not begun; the initially promised two follow-ups suddenly morphed into three; and the films' planned release dates have all been pushed back multiple times, before being abandoned altogether.

Will these films ever see the light of day? (Or better yet, even begin production at all?) Cameron still claims the answer is yes, and has revealed that he's now adding a fourth sequel to the mix.

Cameron's surprising announcement came on Thursday during a panel at CinemaCon, in which the director proclaimed that the four flicks -- "Avatar 2," "Avatar 3," "Avatar 4," and "Avatar 5" -- would be hitting theaters around Christmastime in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023, respectively. »

Fox Officially Confirms 'Deadpool 2' With Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller

14 April 2016 11:50 AM, PDT

Though Fox was reportedly developing a sequel to "Deadpool" months before the offbeat superhero flick even opened, the studio has now officially confirmed that plans for "Deadpool 2" are indeed a go, and the entire original creative team will return for the follow-up.

Speaking at a panel at CinemaCon on Thursday, Fox brass revealed that titular star Ryan Reynolds would be back in his signature red and black suit, and director Tim Miller would once again call the shots behind the camera. "Deadpool" screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are also penning the script again.

The move was a no-brainer for the studio, since "Deadpool" defied box office odds to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, and broke a bunch of other records along the way. It didn't hurt that the flick was a critical and fan favorite, too, and Reynolds himself was front and center in a hands-on, »

'Game of Thrones' Fans Have the Weirdest Request for Maisie Williams

14 April 2016 8:04 AM, PDT

Say you run into "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams at a fan convention, or even a coffee shop in London. What, if anything, would you say to the actress who plays Arya Stark?

Maisie was just on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" to promote the return of GoT on April 24, and it turns out fans ask her two main things:

1) What's going on with Jon Snow? (Eye Roll)

2) Can you read Arya's kill list into my phone, and add my name?

If we were Maisie, we'd be most annoyed by the Jon Snow questions since, as she put it, "What about Arya, right? I'm like, no one wants to hear about Jon Snow, there's loads of other really exciting storylines that are going on on the show." Hint, hint. Seth said he hopes Kit Harington (who plays Jon Snow) gets questions about Arya when he walks down the street. »

Michael Keaton May Be the Villain in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

14 April 2016 7:37 AM, PDT

Batman. Birdman. Vulture? According to Variety, Michael Keaton is in early talks to play the villain in the Sony/Marvel movie "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Tom Holland is starring as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, after making his debut in "Captain America: Civil War." Marisa Tomei plays Aunt May, and Zendaya has a mystery role.

It's not confirmed that Keaton will play a villain, and it's possible there will be more than one villain no matter who is cast. Just the day before this report, Collider posted the rumor that the comics character Vulture would make an appearance, whether as the main villain or not. As they put it after the Keaton report came out:

"But boy is it hard to look at Keaton and Not think of Vulture, an older comics character by the name of Adrian Toomes, whose career as an electronics engineer gives way to a flight harness that gives him superhuman strength. »

Robert Downey Jr. on Spider-Man's 'Hot Aunt,' Nervous Chris Evans, His Iron Baby Girl

14 April 2016 7:07 AM, PDT

Considering Jimmy Kimmel just asked Robert Downey Jr., "Is there any chance you would adopt me?" it may be safe to say he's Team Iron Man in "Captain America: Civil War." Jimmy had Team Cap on his show the other night, and welcomed Team Iron Man on Wednesday. That meant Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, and Emily VanCamp all sat with Rdj, who was the star of the show.

The cast just watched the movie together at the big Hollywood premiere, and Rdj said Chris Evans, aka Cap, was a total stress case about it:

"All I know is, Chris Evans is such a nervous nelly. He gets all — I mean, he plays a real butch guy in the movie. I love Captain America — I hate to say it, I'm not supposed to say it, I love Chris, I love Captain America. Before the premiere, he's all nervous. We're supposed to drive in the Audis. »

Benedict Cumberbatch Is the New Grinch, Because Obviously

14 April 2016 6:11 AM, PDT

Benedict Cumberbatch and his silky, sinister voice born for "it was a dark and stormy night..." tales (and greedy dragons) is now going to voice the Grinch.

Illumination, the studio that made "Despicable Me" and "Minions," made the announcement at CinemaCon. Cumberbatch will voice the Dr. Seuss character in a movie simply titled "The Grinch." (Sorry, Cindy Lou Who, you'll have to wait for your own standalone movie.) Why Cumby? Well, it's probably obvious, but producer Chris Meledandri said he has a voice that exudes "comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability."

It sounds like it's early days for "The Grinch," but it will be adapted for the screen by writer Michael LeSieur and directed by Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney. According to Entertainment Weekly, the current release date is November 10, 2017.

You'll remember that the Grinch of the 1966 Chuck Jones animated TV short "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was voiced by Boris Karloff, »

'Scream': 15 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the Slasher Franchise

14 April 2016 6:00 AM, PDT

It's been five years since the release of "Scream 4" (on April 15, 2011), but like the Ghostface killer, the franchise refuses to die.

Since the first film's release nearly 20 years ago (on December 20, 1996), there have been four movies that have grossed $604 million worldwide, as well as a spinoff series on MTV whose second season begins May 31. "Scream" not only became the most lucrative slasher-film series ever, but it also revitalized the teen horror genre. Still, as inescapable and relentless as the "Scream" franchise has been, there are still a lot of secrets behind that mask. Here are 15 terrifying tidbits of trivia.

1. "Scream" was originally a screenplay by Kevin Williamson called "Scary Movie," inspired in part by the real-life killings of five college students in Gainesville, Florida in 1990. But Dimension studio chief Bob Weinstein didn't think the title reflected Williamson's blend of horror and comedy.

2. Inspired by the recent Michael Jackson hit, »

New Spider-Man Movie Titled 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'

13 April 2016 1:00 PM, PDT

Honey, Spider-Man's home!

Sony unveiled the official title and logo for their upcoming "Spider-Man" film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The movie, which is co-produced by Marvel in their first-ever collaboration, is titled "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Star Tom Holland made a surprise appearance to make the announcement.

"It really is a homecoming for the character because throughout the story Peter is trying to find his true identity and where he belongs in the world," Holland said.

The actor also played a clip from "Captain America: Civil War," which introduces Peter Parker as a high school student in New York City. The clip features Holland, Marisa Tomei (who plays Aunt May), and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Tony offers Peter a research grant, setting up their mentoring relationship, which leads to Spider-Man taking Iron Man's side in his big face-off against Captain America (Chris Evans).

'Orphan Black' Showrunners Tease 'Dark and Twisty' Season 4

13 April 2016 12:00 PM, PDT

"Orphan Black" may be all about the clones, but it's never about repeating itself.

Following an ambitious and expansive third season in which Sarah Manning, her identically DNA-ed sisters and their extended, bizarrely functional family delved deeply into the clones' own sci-fi-tinged origins while still dealing with everyday day dramas like school board elections, series creators and executive producers Graeme Manson and John Fawcett are promising a more intimate tone for the fourth season while still offering up an abundance of out-there situations crafted to put star Tatiana Maslany's versatility even further to the test.

The showrunners sat down with Moviefone to preview what's ahead for the new season -- debuting on April 14 -- including new and returning products of Project Leda, new character combinations, and collaborating with Maslany to create unique and distinctive characters every time a new sister clone joins the family tree.

President Obama Will See 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Before You

13 April 2016 10:30 AM, PDT

As President of the United States you get more than access to nuclear codes and top-secret security briefings -- you also get advance screeners of "Game of Thrones."

During a Facebook Live stream from the show's Hollywood premiere, creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss revealed that President Obama has asked for early viewings of the HBO drama. And since he's the president, well, they said yes.

"I think, for both of us, finding out the President wanted advanced copies of the episodes was an 'ah-ha' moment," Weiss said, answering a question about when they knew they "made it."

"That was a very strange moment."

Benioff added, "When the commander-in-chief says, 'I want to see advanced episodes,' what are you gonna do?"

Obama is an avowed fan of "Game of Thrones," and even asked director David Nutter last year if Jon Snow was really dead. Since he is the leader of the free world, »

Here's the First Mind-Bending 'Doctor Strange' Trailer With Benedict Cumberbatch

13 April 2016 7:20 AM, PDT

Benedict Cumberbatch gets a trippy (multiple) reality check in the first full trailer for "Doctor Strange," another upcoming Marvel superhero movie. But unlike most other Marvel flicks, this one has a decidedly more psychedelic, mystical tone.

The trailer gives us the broad strokes of the story: Dr. Stephen Strange is a gifted surgeon whose hands become crippled in an accident. Then, he meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), who reveals that this reality is "one of many." Ever the doctor, Strange is skeptical at first. "I don't believe in fairy tales about chakras or energy or the power of belief." But after seeing some astonishing things — bending cityscapes, a la "Inception" — he's begging to learn.

"Doctor Strange," which also stars Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelson, hits theaters November 4.

Why Disney's Live-Action 'Jungle Book' Has Deep Roots in 'Bambi,' 'Lion King'

12 April 2016 4:00 PM, PDT

In anticipation of Disney's live-action adaptation of "The Jungle Book," Moviefone had the opportunity to chat with director Jon Favreau about what inspired him to re-imagine the beloved animated classic.

Opening this Friday, Favreau's movie takes us back into the jungle with Mowgli and friends using cutting-edge technology that renders an incredible, photo-realistic world in 3D. When you see it, you'll be shocked by the knowledge that "The Jungle Book" was shot entirely in Downtown Los Angeles using practical sets and Dolby vision laser projection. In other words, if you thought movies like "Avatar" and "Life of Pi" looked amazing, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

We also get some of what we love from the original musical Walt Disney production but fit to reflect the time and outfitted with a stellar voice cast. Newcomer Neel Sethi plays Mowgli and is joined by Sir Ben Kingsley (Bagheera), Lupita Nyong'o (Raksha), Bill Murray »
