Storyline

This costume drama features England's splendid Renaissance dynasty under King Henry VIII. Beginning in Season 1 when Henry VIII was growing desperate for an heir and growing distant from his first wife, the series moves quickly to the period when Anne Boleyn became his obsession. During this time Cardinal Wolsey rose to become the power behind his throne, ruling ruthlessly and nearly absolutely while Henry (played by Johnathon Rhys Meyers) for the most part followed the Cardinal's advice, maneuvering through a series of betrayals and plots against him. When Anne Boleyn plays much harder to get than any woman ever has, Henry begins to search for a way out of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, so that he can make Anne his wife. Needing a divorce, Henry turns to Wolsey, who promises to help him create waves of backlash from the church, as well as the Spanish Habsburg dynasty and its overseas empire. Against this background gyrate the private lives and political intrigues of several ... Written by KGF Vissers and Ayla Slessor

Goofs

As the series is set between 1491 and 1547, the fiddler is a major anachronism for several reasons. His instrument appears to be a Stradivarius design, the basis for most modern violins. Antonio Stradivari was born in 1644. The violin was held against the chest or stomach, not under the chin, until the 18th century. Finally, violin bows looked like small archery bows until the 19th century, when Francois Tourte invented the reverse curve bow. See more »

very interesting
30 November 2011 | by (Bulgaria) – See all my reviews

I would recommend "The Tudors" to everyone who likes stories about medieval times and about politics in personal and international affairs.

I would say the series revolve around personal choices and relationships involving individuals, international affairs and the church.

I am not sure how historically correct the series are, but they definitely convey the spirit of that time in terms of the King's figure and the Court life.

I find the series unpredictable and intriguing.

King's acting is excellent and convincing.

In my mind it's a YES.
