Gotham Season 2 Episode 14 Review ‘This Ball of Mud and Meanness’

17 March 2016 8:05 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Martin Carr reviews the fourteenth episode of Gotham season 2…

David Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne might look like a preppy who needs to get on the Mars Bar diet, but don’t let that cover fool you. Because this week he gets to exhibit his kick ass colours facing off against Matches Malone. A somewhat less monstrous version of a cold-blooded killer thanks to Michael Bowen’s layered performance. Who gives Malone the humanity and regret which strips away the animal to show a man beneath.

In more ways than one Wayne’s expectations are his undoing which temporarily throws him off guard. Mazouz handles this delicate dialogue scene with skill holding his own against the seasoned veteran, who is holding all the aces dialogue wise. In many ways Bowen’s generosity here verges on the paternal, which is at once disturbing yet highly engaging from an audience perspective.

Lori Petty makes a wonderful guest appearance in this week’s dialogue-heavy delight from Gotham season 2…

This review contains spoilers

2.14 This Ball Of Mud And Meanness

Holy cupcake fight club, Batman! This week’s Gotham episode was quite possibly its best episode yet, due to the fact that it finally addressed the ‘who killed the Waynes?’ mystery head on. After two years of waiting, David Mazouz has finally got to portray Bruce Wayne with a real human dilemma – what to do now that he’s found the killer.

This Ball Of Mud And Meanness' centrepiece was the dialogue-focused showdown between Bruce and Matches Malone (impressive guest star Michael Bowen). In this scene, Mazouz delivered a nuanced and troubled performance which should serve to banish any lingering doubts that he isn’t perfect for the role of young Bruce Wayne.

Gotham Season 2 Episode 14 Review: “This Ball of Mud and Meanness”

14 March 2016 5:50 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

This week’s Gotham was one of the strongest episode of the second half for Season 2 so far as Bruce’s arc got to a very compelling point while Penguin continues to go through a hellish time at Arkham that takes a surprising turn of event at the end. We got introduced to a new character this week, Jeri, played by Lori Petty who I will always remember best as the DC villain Livewire on Superman: The Animated Series. As I knew that she was coming into this episode and was dressed up the way she did, I knew that Livewire

Female Joker Revealed in 'Gotham' Season 2 Photos

4 March 2016 8:59 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

During its first season, Fox's Gotham introduced fans to a character named Jerome, played by Cameron Monaghan, who many assumed was the future version of The Joker. However, this eccentric character was killed off early on in the third Season 2 episode The Last Laugh, and the producers later confirmed that Jerome would eventually inspire the character who would go on to become the real Joker. Since then, there have been rumors that the iconic villain may be a female. Thanks to new photos from this season's 14th episode, The Ball of Mud and Meannness, we have what may be our first look at this female Joker, played by Lori Petty.

We don't have confirmation that Lori Petty's character, who is listed as "Jeri" on the episode's IMDb page, is in fact The Joker in Gotham. However, her outfit and peculiar demeanor seem to indicate that she may actually be this iconic villain. »

This isn't the first time the series has teased a precursor to The Joker, Cameron Monaghan starred as a cackling potential version in four episodes of the series before his sudden apparent demise. This episode sees Alfred and Selina help Bruce on his quest to find his parents' killer Matches Malone (Michael Bowen), while Hugo Strange (Wong) continues his treatment to reduce Penguin's aggression.

Watch the New 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 4 Teaser

1 March 2016 12:25 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

A new teaser for the fourth season of "Orange Is the New Black" skewers the recent #OscarsSoWhite controversy, while also previewing the smallest bit of new footage from upcoming episodes.

The clip begins with Taystee (Danielle Brooks) and Cindy (Adrienne C. Moore) cracking wise about a boring awards show, and the equally milquetoast "white folks" behind it. Scenes from last season are then interspersed with a few glimpses at season four action, with Piper (Taylor Schilling) extolling the virtues of "talent, originality, [and] sense of humor," something our Litchfield ladies have in spades.

Unfortunately, they also have plenty of troubles, too, including a Swat team moving in on the prison (perhaps to wrangle the women who took a dip in the lake in the season three finale?), and some pat-downs for the likes of Chang (Lori Tan Chinn), Lolly (Lori Petty), and Gloria (Selenis Levya), the latter of whom is shoved »

The Grace of Keanu Reeves

Today's Must Read Elsewhere

Our sometimes contributor Angelica Bastien wrote a great piece for Bright Wall / Dark Room called "The Grace of Keanu Reeves" in which she argues against the common dismissals of his acting ability. As a longtime fan of Keanu (Point Break/Private Idaho being the peak era of devotion) this was a joy to read.

One of her greatest points deals with "the crossroads of virile and vulnerable, territory previously charted by actors as legendary as Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and Paul Newman. But there's a difference.

These actors often seem to fight against the lustful gaze of the camera, while Keanu supplants himself to it. Where they seem cynical, disinterested, or too wounded as a romantic lead, Keanu is utterly open.

In "Point Break," he’s a hotshot with a gun and a badge. But he’s also an object of lust for the camera (and »

It's no disaster, but there's still not much point to the remake of Point Break...

Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break was fairly successful when it hit cinemas back in 1991, pitting Keanu Reeves' rookie FBI agent against Patrick Swayze's impossibly cool surfing bank robber in a film that landed with audiences but was largely dismissed by critics.

Its uniquely sensitive spin on macho action movies has led to its reappraisal as a cult classic, thus making this remake pretty much inevitable. Few of us would have predicted that director/cinematographer Ericson Core would convert it into an extreme sports movie, but that's one of the only surprises to be had here.

After a tragic accident, former poly-athlete Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) leaves the adrenaline junkie scene behind and applies to join the FBI. He's still on probation when he discovers that a daring gang of bank »
