The AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G is a premium standard lens for Nikon's full frame SLRs, which is designed to give the best possible imaging performance even when shot at maximum aperture. Nikon says it's highly corrected for coma, meaning that point highlights are rendered correctly right across the frame at large apertures. The lens is also specifically designed to give an attractive rendition of out-of-focus regions of the frame. It can also be used on Nikon's DX format SLRs, on which it will behave like a classic 85mm 'portrait' lens. This image quality all comes with a hefty price tag, though.

Our review

The AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4G is an unusual lens, both in terms of its slightly eccentric focal length and its optical design philosophy. It's not especially sharp for a lens that's designed to be used at large apertures, but this is offset by the excellence of its images in almost every other respect. Its audience will naturally be limited by its sky-high price, but we suspect many owners will fall in love with the images it can create.

Good for: Low light photography, and selective focus shooting

Not so good for: FX photographers looking for a general purpose 'normal' prime - the 50mm f/1.4G is likely a better choice
