Set Up Parental Controls

Turn on Parental Controls to restrict access to certain features on your Fire tablet, such as web browsing or purchasing from the Amazon Appstore. Help for Fire HD 6 (4th Generation), Fire HD 7 (4th Generation), Fire HDX 8.9 (4th Generation), Fire (5th Generation), Fire HD 8 (5th Generation), and Fire HD 10 (5th Generation).

From the Parental Controls screen, you can choose to create a profile in Amazon FreeTime, or create a parental controls password. With Amazon FreeTime, you can create a personalized profile for your child, set daily time limits, and subscribe to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited to gain access to exclusive kid-friendly content for a monthly fee.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Parental Controls.
  3. Tap the switch next to Parental Controls.
  4. Enter a password, confirm your password, and then tap Finish.

Note: Your Parental Controls password is different from your lock screen password.

  5. After you've set a password, you can restrict one or more of the following:
    • The Amazon store
    • Web browsing
    • Email, Contacts, and Calendar apps
    • Social network sharing
    • The camera
    • Specific content types (for example, Books or Apps)

You can also password protect one or more of the following:

    • Purchases from the Amazon stores on your device (for example, the Amazon Appstore)
    • Playing movies and TV shows from Amazon Video
    • Connecting to Wi-Fi
    • Enabling location services

After you turn on Parental Controls, a lock icon appears at the top of the screen.

To schedule when your child can use their Fire tablet, you can create a daily curfew. Tap the switch next to Set a Curfew to turn this feature on, then tap Curfew Schedule. Choose the days and times that the child will not be able to access the device. To unlock a device in curfew, enter your parental controls password. The curfew will be disabled afterwards and you will be returned to the Parental Controls screen.

You can tap the switch next to Monitor This Profile to collect activity information from the device, which you can see in Activity Center from your account on the Amazon website. A monitored profile will show a parent and child icon at the top of the screen.
