British cinema probably isn’t the main cultural wave that most people associate with the ’60s, but New York City’s own Film Forum is seeking to rectify that with their upcoming film festival, The Brit New Wave. Spanning over 16 days with 30 films on the slate, the festival is honoring an eclectic and varied time in film history.

The festival will screen films such as the Beatles classic “A Hard Day’s Night,” Laurence Olivier’s “The Entertainer,” Michael Caine’s “Alfie,” Anne Bancroft’s “The Pumpkin Eater,” as well as films from Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Burton, and the debuts of Albert Finney, Julie Christie, and Alan Bates.

Additionally, the theater will also give a special run to the new restoration of John Schlesinger’s debut feature, the rarely-seen kitchen sink drama “A King of Loving, »

Vertigo Screens at The Hi-Pointe Saturday Morning – Here are Alfred Hitchcock’s Ten Best Movies

7 March 2017 5:59 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo screens at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater this weekend as part of their Classic Film Series. It’s  Saturday, March 11th at 10:30am at the Hi-Pointe located at 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117. The film will be introduced by Harry Hamm, movie reviewer for Kmox. Admission is only $5

This gives us a perfect excuse to re-run this top ten list so here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are Alfred Hitchcock’s ten best films:

Frenzy

Frenzy, Hitchcock’s next to last feature film from 1972, represented a homecoming of sorts since it was the first film completely shot in his native England since his silents and early ” talkies ” in the 1930’s. By dipping into the then somewhat new territory of serial killers, he took full advantage of the new cinema freedoms and truly earned his ‘ R ‘ MPAA rating. »

Kong: Skull Island review – only de-evolution can explain this zestless mashup

2 March 2017 2:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Tom Hiddleston’s talents are lost in this jumbled jungle caper that repeatedly indulges in anti-climax and silliness

Deep in the distant jungle … the undergrowth stirs, the lagoons froth, the branches shake and a huge monster rears terrifyingly up on its haunches, blotting out the sun. Run for your lives! It’s a 700 ft turkey, making squawking and gobbling noises and preparing to lay a gigantic egg.

This fantastically muddled and exasperatingly dull quasi-update of the King Kong story looks like a zestless mashup of Jurassic Park, Apocalypse Now and a few exotic visual borrowings from Miss Saigon. It gets nowhere near the elemental power of the original King Kong or indeed Peter Jackson’s game remake; it’s something Ed Wood Jr might have made with a trillion dollars to do what he liked with but minus the fun. The film gives away the ape’s physical appearance far too early, »

Inside No. 9 series 3 episode 3 review: The Riddle Of The Sphinx

Louisa Mellor Feb 28, 2017

Inside No. 9 series 3 pays homage to Sleuth in a delightfully nasty, slippery story themed around cryptic crosswords…

This review contains spoilers.

3.3 The Riddle Of The Sphinx

With its single location, limited cast and playful, macabre twists, the 1972 film Sleuth starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine is a godfather of sorts to Inside No. 9. This week’s especially slippery episode pays homage to Anthony Shaffer’s warped story of revenge between two rivals in love.

It’s the most complicated tale Inside No. 9 has ever spun. As co-creator Steve Pemberton told us at the series three press launch, “If you missed two sentences in a row, you’d be like ‘what?’ Even I was thinking how are people following this? »

The recognisable future of Children Of Men

25 February 2017 1:04 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Mark Harrison Feb 27, 2017

Alfonso Cuaron's Children Of Men is a film from a decade ago that very much stands the test of time...

“Last one to die, please turn out the light.”

The tenth anniversary of Children Of Men came at the end of a tumultuous year in politics. You don't have to look far on the web for thinkpieces about how the results of the Brexit referendum or the election of Donald Trump as Us President have brought us closer to the grim forecast of Alfonso Cuarón's superb dystopian thriller, but rewatching it now, the film feels a triumph of preparation rather than prescience.

Based on Pd James' novel, the film takes place in the year 2027, in the midst of a global epidemic of infertility. Britain has closed its doors to immigrants and refuses to acknowledge the status of 'fugees' as human beings. The day after the »

Top Five Films That Influenced Change

24 February 2017 2:52 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I Daniel Blake

Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake (releasing on DVD and Blu-ray 27th February) lays bare the cruel realities for those who fall through the cracks of society. With the film resulting in much topical debate, we take a look at five films that have influenced change following its release to screen:

Alfie

In the 1966 original (not the remake), Julia Foster’s character Gilda undergoes a harrowing abortion – carried out in a back room in Alfie’s (Michael Caine) flat. At the time, abortion was illegal in the UK, and the procedure is seen to be carried out by a “back-street” abortionist.

“Backstreet abortions” were outlawed in the UK with the introduction of the 1967 Abortion Act. Although not openly stated, Alfie’s conscience when he saw the results of a botched operation is arguably a contributor to this, as – coincidentally – the film released months before the law began to change. »

Hollywood Shines at the BAFTA Awards

9 February 2017 10:15 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Prior to 1999, the British Academy Film and Television Awards were seen as the poor, but perfectly respectable, country cousin of their high-wattage American brethren. There were a number of reasons for this, chief among them the four-month time lag between U.S. and U.K. release dates, which saw a bizarre hike in prestige releases during April, when the BAFTA ceremony was traditionally held.

Until 1997, the event also included an extensive roll of television awards, which made for a long night, with the top film awards inevitably going to the same films honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences two months earlier. The BAFTAs felt stale.

In 1999, however, the BAFTAs stepped up the glamour offensive. Elizabeth Taylor was honored with a BAFTA fellowship, presented by Michael Caine, while the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, and Christina Ricci walked the red carpet outside North London’s dowdy Business Design Centre. »

Joan Collins and Pauline Collins star in Trailer and Poster for The Time of Their Lives

In 2015, Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel stuck two fingers up at the film industry with the Paolo Sorrentino directed Youth. It proved to the whole industry just because you’ve reached a certain age doesn’t mean you’ve lost your talent or appeal to the movie going public. In fact over the last few years we have seen actors such as Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro all prove they are all digging their heels in and not going anywhere.

Now it’s time for the ladies to get in on the act with Golden Globe-winner Dame Joan Collins – who we last saw make an appearance in last year’s Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie – Oscar nominee Pauline Collins (The Last Dragon Slayer, Albert Nobbs) and Italian heartthrob Franco Nero (Django, Django Unchained) all starring in the upcoming feel-good comedy, The Time of Their Lives »

Drive-In Dust Offs: The Island (1980)

21 January 2017 10:41 AM, PST | DailyDead | See recent DailyDead news »

Michael Caine had an interesting run of genre flicks starting in the late ‘70s. The Swarm (1978) was laughed off the screen, Dressed to Kill (1980) was enjoyed by audiences and critics alike, and The Hand (1981) dropped his batting average once again. Nestled in between all those was The Island (1980), a killer pirate movie from the author of Jaws and directed by the man behind The Bad News Bears. What could go wrong? Well, everything, according to most folk. It’s an odd one to be sure, but the wild tonal shifts that prevent the ship from staying on a clear course make it a fascinating treasure that gets better with each viewing.

Released in June by Universal, The Island had a surefire pedigree for success; the Jaws juggernaut of producers Zanuck and Brown and author Peter Benchley (here, adapting his own novel) promised a good time to be had by all. »

Simon Brew Jan 20, 2017

Anne Hathaway is set to join Rebel Wilson in the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake…

One comment from Donald Trump in last year’s Us Presidential debates appears to have gone a long way. When he called Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman”, the term was picked up by her supporters, and #nastywomen was soon trending.

The team behind the remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels clearly noticed too, as the new take on the story will now go by the name of Nasty Women.

We already knew that Rebel Wilson was in line to take one of the two lead roles. Now we get the news that Anne Hathaway is in talks for the other lead role. The most recent take on the story saw Michael Caine and Steve Martin in the leads.

Hathaway has to wrap up Ocean’s Eight first, and Nasty Women also still needs a director. »
