www.fgks.org   »   [go: up one dir, main page]

Our teams have been working on a few new features and Charts on IMDb (like the new Most Popular TV Chart, for instance) and as part of that effort, we’re re-naming several menus and Chart-page titles.

The intent of this re-naming is to make our menus and page titles clearer to all users, and to standardize naming across the multiple places users view IMDb  including desktop computers, mobile phone browsers, and in our Android and iOS apps.  A more consistent, easy-to-navigate experience is our goal.

We will rename our Top 250 Charts for Movies and TV to "Top Rated Movies" and "Top Rated TV Shows." The "Bottom 100 Movies" Chart will be re-named "Lowest Rated Movies."  All of these Charts are generated by users' ratings, and we hope the new names reflect that.

Our current MOVIEmeter Chart will also be split into two new lists, one for TV and one for Movies, and renamed as "Most Popular TV Shows" and "Most Popular Movies" to better reflect the composition and purpose of the new Charts.

The re-naming will not apply to Charts or titles on IMDbPro.

As we always enjoy hearing from our users, please take the time to share your thoughts regarding these changes by commenting below. We look forward to reading your feedback.

Thanks for using IMDb!

There were so many posts here when the TV list rolled out, about which shows IMDb left out, it was clear users were not understanding how tbe titles were chosen. I think this is a good change!

Thanks!

Scottie,

it's a 6 episode tv mini-series.  not a film.

Ben,

This thread is an announcement is about the title of the page being re-named.  No one's individual vote matters...the lists are based on how users vote.  What you'd need to do to get higher on such a list is to be thought of as being better than titles above when voting.  They re-named the charts to make it clear that it's based on votes, not staff favorites or Ben's favorites and the titles included would not be something a debate over it would change. I thought it was a good theory...I guess people still aren't connecting those dots?

The TV shows ratings are NOT true to form. The highest rated show that I found was an episode of the Showtime series Dexter. Season 4, episode 12 was rated 9.8 out of a rating system that had a maximum score of 10. Dexter also has several episodes that rank higher than 9.5. stated as highest ranked TV shows.

Where is "Lost"!?
At the time of this reply,  Lost  is listed at #220 on the "Top 250".

(Back in 2015,  Lost  was once as high as #181
but it has been pushed down since then.)

Providing both a most popular and top rated list for both movies and TV should reduce the confusion for these lists.

IMDb Charts
Box Office
Most Popular Movies
Top Rated Movies
Most Popular TV
Top Rated TV
Lowest Rated Movies

However, regardless of how carefully IMDb defines the criteria for these lists, there will be people who complain that a specific film or TV program does not appear on these lists.

IMDb currently also provides these lists:
Popular Movies by Genre Each one of these genre pages, includes additional links to advanced searches for that genre. For instance, the page for Action "Most Popular Action Feature Films", provides these links:

Refine By: Highest Rated Action Feature Films With At Least 1,000 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=action&title_type=feature&num_votes=1000,&sort=u...

Highest Rated Action TV Series With At Least 1,000 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=action&title_type=tv_series&num_votes=1000,&sort...

Top-US-Grossing Action Titles
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=action&sort=boxoffice_gross_us,desc

Lowest Rated Action Feature Films With At Least 1,000 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=action&title_type=feature&num_votes=1000,&sort=u...

Action Lists
See all 152 lists
Create a Action list  »

It would be helpful to indicate in the "Top Movies by Genre" section on the Charts page (http://www.imdb.com/chart/), that additional information is available by genre. Maybe this phrase would be sufficient:
Each Popular Movies by Genre page provides links to additional genre related charts.

= = =

Being able to assign a tag to a list is a poorly documented feature. It appears that such a tag can only be assigned when the list is created.

= = =

Three or more years ago, IMDb also provided Top Movies and Most Popular Movies by gender. These lists were manually created. It would be useful to be have this information available again along with adding Top Movies and Most Popular Movies by IMDb demographic group:
  • Males
  • Females
  • Aged under 18
  • Males under 18
  • Females under 18
  • Aged 18-29
  • Males Aged 18-29
  • Females Aged 18-29
  • Aged 30-44
  • Males Aged 30-44
  • Females Aged 30-44
  • Aged 45+
  • Males Aged 45+
  • Females Aged 45+
  • IMDb staff
  • Top 1000 voters
  • US users
  • Non-US users

1. I'm not sure I was aware of these lists before the renaming as I didn't use them, but I was led here today by your front page announcement, "IMDb Launches Most Popular TV Show Chart Ranking the Week's Hottest TV Shows."
2. When I followed the links, I saw that it ranks only current shows, which is okay, but how can it ranks shows which haven't even debuted yet (e.g., Netflix's /Jessica Joens/ and more to the point, shows you're not even taking votes for yet, e.g., 2016's /Vinyl/?

With aberrations like this, IMHO such a list isn't worth following.

Was looking for Longmire on your list but I didn't see it. Its the best thing on TV and has been for the last 4 years. Looking forward to more seasons and The Longmire Posse is trying very hard to see that happen. I'vee used this site before to vote on both the Longmire show and its cast. I am not alone in my wanting more Longmire, we need this show.

You are dead right Longmire was a terrific series and l if remember rightly got a very high rating from IMBd (who give merit for the best movies/ TV series). However it is unbelievable that Longmire does not appear in this list. It is very strange that the series has had little fanfare...promotion of this wonderful series was sadly lacking. I came across it by accident. I am sure there must be many viewers who do not know it exists. Which is a great shame.

Hi Hailey Shannon,

Until IMDb implements a "Lowest Rate TV" list like their Top Rated TV, this Advanced Title Search will give you similar information.

Lowest Rated TV Series With At Least 5,000 Votes
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?at=0&num_votes=5000,&sort=user_rating,asc&title_type=tv...

You may find these two searches entertaining:

Need to OVERHAUL WHOLE PAGE AND CHANGE MORE THAN YOUR CHARTS. I have no clue who will if anyone will see it but when I saw the Rankings of TV Shows I laughed because of the list and what was deemed as 9.5 by IMDB users? Alone? Or is there other elements that go into it. Some algorithm? Every show or movie for that matter is voted on by a different # of users. So if a show - for example Preacher had one person rate it a 10 then how would that work when another show has 5000 Users rate it. Mini Series like Band of Brothers or shows like Breaking Bad are not the same as The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Family Guy etc. And even then shows that still are running and making new seasons need to be in a different Category as well as say Seinfeld, Cheers, etc. Another thing that I see to be a problem is that IMDB supports garbage because most people are stupid sheep. 2 and a Half Men and How I Met your Mother and the worst of all The Big Bang Theory people know about. IMDB tends to follow or report on stupid shows based on film and superheroes. Like Canadian Radio - or all radio now that DJ's have music directors that pick the music - because of some bribes by A&R people that happened so long ago (funny how radio, TV, Video Games & film are more regulated then Wall St. & we keep bailing them out and still no regulation - thanks USA) My point is when I found out about the Preacher and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's connection - w/ a great actor from The Devil's Double Dominic Cooper as the Preacher. I did not see anything on IMDB and I am always on the site checking out movie titles and actors names and work history etc. A great new Show like Mr. Robot is never on the site. Another is Rick and Morty. You have failed at being proactive and opening people up to great Film and TV. I tried to edit something that was clearly a sloppy post about a mistake on High Rise and it was not accepted. I was not told that I need to fix certain things and it was so confusing and time consuming if I had resorted to using Help. It was like searching the internet before Google. IMPOSSIBLE. I am all over the place but who actually runs the site and decides what is news worthy. I rarely see a link that is. Anything that is gossip or not about film or TV and about someone''s personal life is irrelevant. Again I think you need a cult movie section and TV as well. I need to research you to see who really owns and operates. You could favour certain networks and that is why I never see proactive writing or links. In fact I would re-vamp the whole website. It could really do so much more then it does. Part of the problem is how it is set up when you 1st open it. I haven't given it too much thought because I very rarely deviate from my own searches and or watchlist.

That version uses a minimum 5,000 ratings. So in your question, they would not compare as a title with one rating won't be on that list. You can create your own using advanced search with whatever minimum/maximum you choose.

They should revamp the whole entire site? Certainly you could just create your own more easily. Then it will be just the way you want it. There's no reason they should redo the whole thing so it's how you like, though.  That's a little nutty, don't you think?

There is nothing in the mission of IMDb that says they aim to open up people to anything...so to say they fail at it is odd. That said, just using the database opens me up to things I otherwise wouldn't notice, pretty much daily.  So I see no fail there.

Odd post.  However, if you have suggestions for change, perhaps you should post idea threads about them. This thread is an announcement of name change of the chart, not discussion of changes to the chart or site in general.  You imply they changed it, but the name was changed so people understand it better. There was not change (though they change things all the time around the site) implied in the message here. But if you want change, you should indicate and explain in "idea" threads as needed. Your comments are kind of lost in this announcement thread.

Good luck!

Using titles from across the whole spectrum on this list and saying this is the top choice was destined not to be met with agreement. And how is it that 'Longmire' which had been given a high rating by IMDb in the past, does not even appear on the list?

The list is ranked by a formula which includes the number of ratings each show received from voters, and value of ratings received from regular voters
and 15 others currently rank higher following that formula.

Why is it the only show that is ranked like that? I can't find any other shows that have a higher rating overall but are lower. I'm pretty sure you're right but just saying
Game of Thrones has more overall votes than Breaking Bad (both with a 9.5 ranking), but is ranked 4th -- not 3rd.  They both also have a 9.4 ranking on this list....doesn't make any sense, but we just need to accept it haha

You can create your own version of the list via "Advanced Title Search."

At the search bar, change "all" to "advanced search," then choose "Advanced Title Search."

You can choose from a wide variety of search criteria including setting the votes at whatever number you choose.  There's no need to keep changing the pre-set lists based on requests.  There will always be someone to come along and want it higher/lower, etc.

This thread is solely about the fact they re-named them so users might realize the list is based upon votes by users and not some just made up by someone or by staff.  It's to hopefully end the "you forgot this title," and "that title doesn't belong" debates.

Yes, but the thing is that if I do that, i won't be able to get the real calification of the show. I will only get the aproximated number of the arithmetic mean. The grace of the IMDB own ranking with a mark based on a formula is that they have the exacts numbers of the means and theirs own data and values (the weighted rating).

For instance I made my own ranking of Series aplying the formula with a minimal of 25.000 (like movies), the result is pretty good, I got a very similar order, with the difference of shows like Lost or TWD have a best position due to their greater amount of votes, and shows as the guy says above, are in lower positions. The only problem of my order is that I don't have the real number of the rating, I only have "8.1s, 8.2s, 8.3s, etc". I can add fake decimals accordying to the order, for example if I have 10 shows with 8.5 I can order them by giving decimals: 8.46, 8.47, 8.48, (...), 8.54. My ratings will be more accurate, but still not the exacts numbers that IMDB have.

So that's why if I say, "Hey, I think 10.000 will be more accurate", or "15.000", closer to the movies rating" is for advicing the IMDB own rating, in my case.

I really think 10.000 or more is better. In my ranking Lost is in 30 position. Prison Break and other well known series has a TOP 50 rating. In this 5.000 minimal ranking they aren't even in TOP 50..

Please delete one of the Dragon Ball's and Dragon Ball Z's from top rated movies. You have Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z both listed twice. I assume one is the Japanes Version, however it is still the same show and you would not do this for movies.

I think what needs to happen there is the two Dragon Balls need to be merged (since there isn't that much difference between the Japanese and English releases (compared to, say, Pokemon or Sailor Moon)), while at least one of the Dragon Ball Zs needs to be severely downvoted (ideally as a result of its highest voters realising the 1996 English broadcast was, frankly, a hackjob on Funimation's part. http://www.animecauldron.com/dbzuncensored/series/saiyajinsagamenu.html)

They have created the Top Rated TV Shows chart.

In the right hand column there is a list titled Top Rated TV Shows by Genre followed by a list of the Genres. Clicking on one of these will allow you to see only the subset of the Top Series that have that Genre attached.

You can also 'roll your own' listings at the Advanced Title Search.

I hate this change.

I really dislike how, like movies, the chart is now limited to only 250. IMDB used to be my most used tool in finding tv shows, because I could look at the top rated TV shows and not have it limited to 250 selections. Please, please bring back the ability to view ALL top rated shows with more than 2000 votes.

Also, Alex, the topic is a "re-naming" of the chart...not a change in number of titles on it.  As pointed out above, you can still do what you're describing, same as before, and the number of titles on the top 250 is still the top 250.

This needs its own discussion and has nothing to do with the announcement regarding the re-naming of the top films and shows features. Forked into its own thread to keep the topics divided and so this new topic gets attention.

Please reference the new conversation here: Watchlist chronological order by year, but out of order within the year...
