Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Drama | Fantasy

Metascore: 36/100 (10 reviews)
As a war between rival queen sisters Ravenna and Freya escalates, Eric and fellow warrior Sara, members of the Huntsmen army raised to protect Freya, try to conceal their forbidden love as they combat Ravenna's wicked intentions.

The Buzz: Though Snow White and the Huntsman made $400 million worldwide, most people remember it as the movie set where Kristen Stewart stepped out on then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson with director Rupert Sanders, truly bringing an end to the Twilight saga. Though plans for the sequel didn't include Stewart, the addition of Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain might help audiences easily forget Snow White, one thing Universal might have let slip is the fact that the original movie didn't hold up well (currently it has a low 6.1 rating on IMDb), so as much as the idea of Charlize Theron's army facing off against Emily Blunt's Huntsmen appeals in general, this second chapter might face a steep drop off in ticket sales after opening weekend.

The untold true story behind the meeting between the King of Rock 'n Roll and President Nixon, resulting in this revealing, yet humorous moment immortalized in the most requested photograph in the National Archives.

The Buzz: So, maybe it wasn't the Yalta Conference. But for most folks, the greatest meeting of the 20th century just may have been when Elvis landed in the Oval Office to meet up with Tricky Dick President Richard Nixon himself on Dec. 21, 1970. The meeting was memorialized in what has become one of the most memorable if bizarre photographs of the last century. This latest offering from Amazon Studios provides the story behind that photograph and reveals a little bit about two cultural figures who still command much attention after their deaths, precisely because beneath their carefully crafted public veneers lay some seriously idiosyncratic personalities, now on full display again on the big screen. - Bret

Certificate R   -   Drama

A failed American businessman looks to recoup his losses by traveling to Saudi Arabia and selling his idea to a wealthy monarch.

The Buzz: Novelist/occasional screenwriter Dave Eggers gets another one of his works translated into a movie, a story focused on the Great Recession that was developed as an indie project and initially launched into the world at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival, where world sales agreements helped get the last bits of money in place to make the movie. We're still surprised that Eggers's best-known book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, has never been turned into a film, and we're unsure of the general appeal here even with Tom Hanks portraying washed-up salesman Alan Clay. Though there appears to be lighter tones in the story, its framework is rather depressing.

U   -   Fantasy | Horror | Romance

Metascore: 80/100 (10 reviews)
From the bitter quest of the Queen of Longtrellis, to two mysterious sisters who provoke the passion of a king, to the King of Highhills obsessed with a giant Flea, these tales are inspired by the fairytales by Giambattista Basile.

The Buzz: For his English-language debut, Gomorrah writer/director Matteo Garrone makes a wonderful decision to go even further out there than he did in his most recent project, Reality. At the heart of this decision is a tribute to the aesthetics and design of Italy's golden age of cinema, the sort of filmmaking that Garrone was compared to when he first hit the international film scene.

  -   Action

As former cop Garza seeks revenge on Santos, the crime lord who framed him, he forms an unlikely team with a young hacker who successfully stole $10 million from Santos.

The Buzz: Star Omar Chaparro got his start about a decade ago on the radio, where his character-focused comedy helped him make the tough transition into TV, where his celebrity status grew after winning a special edition of "Big Brother Mexico." Lots of voice-over work and movie/TV spin-offs followed (he appeared in Mexico's version of "Sex and the City" as well a the Fast and Furious parody Superfast!, and this action-comedy was created to help him cross over in the States, though you could say he's already a celebrity here, too.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 62/100 (6 reviews)
An aging widow from New York City follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband passes away.

The Buzz: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World writer/director Lorene Scafaria offers up this mother/daughter comedy which, like so many others, seems to assert that the parent is more neurotic and annoying than their child. Really, though, it looks like Susan Sarandon's character is living mostly right to us since she always has a bag of fresh bagels handy, offers astrology-based advice, and has it going on to the degree where Harley-riding J.K. Simmons wants to spend the rest of his life with her, unconditionally.

Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 50/100 (5 reviews)
Friends hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen kitten by posing as drug dealers for a street gang.
Director:

The Buzz: It's been a long time since we enjoyed a trailer as much as this one while simultaneously wondering aloud whether the movie could sustain the laughter for 100 minutes. It seems to be a low-key challenge for Jordan Peele and his comedy partner, the suddenly everywhere Keegan-Michael Key, who consciously uncoupled from their successful TV show last year while making this movie.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

Three generations come together in the week leading up to Mother's Day.

The Buzz: Garry Marshall is back with another ensemble holiday movie. It's a subgenre that tends to alienate everyone but its core audience though this particular one, which features Julia Roberts in a memorable wig, will probably become a perennial at-home favorite.

Certificate PG   -   Animation | Action | Adventure | Comedy | Sci-Fi

When the galaxy comes under the threat of a nefarious space captain, a mechanic and his newfound robot ally join an elite squad of combatants to save the universe.

The Buzz: TMNT's Kevin Munroe teams with animation vet Jericca Cleland to tag-team direct this adaptation of the popular video game series that you already know really really really wants to become a franchise. What you may not know unless you're a fan of the game: Sony developed a version of the movie more than decade ago with Edgar Wright and Guillermo Del Toro coming and going from the project at different stages.

Certificate R   -   Biography | Drama

In 1959, a young journalist ventures to Havana, Cuba to meet his idol, the legendary Ernest Hemingway who helped him find his literary voice, while the Cuban Revolution comes to a boil around them.

The Buzz: Veteran indie producer Bob Yari takes a second turn behind the camera to direct this sturdy-looking biography of Ernest Hemingway's friendship with journalist Ed Meyers. Deceased war correspondent Denne Bart Petitclerc, also a friend of Hemingway's, wrote the script, which Yari finally got into production after a series of delays. Fans of a slow burner will probably be satisfied with this story.

Documentary

An exploration of Earth and beyond as seen from the International Space Station. Narrated by Jennifer Lawrence.

The Buzz: Travel to space guided by the voice of Jennifer Lawrence in the latest documentary from Toni Myers, who has focused her career on the subject.

Certificate R   -   Drama

When everything is for sale, what's the value of love? Jesus does make up for a troupe of drag performers in Havana, but dreams of being a performer. When he finally gets his chance to be on stage, a stranger emerges from the crowd and punches him in the face. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, Viva becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one another and become a family again.
Director:

The Buzz: Now that drag has fully come into the mainstream here in the U.S., what a better time to get a look at a culture where it's a little less easy for a man to teeter outside his door in a pair of heels? With senses of humor and drama that bring Almodóvar to mind, Irish director Paddy Breathnach dove into a Cuban subculture and emerged with a film that made the shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Oscar last year. - Arno

Certificate PG-13   -   Biography | Drama

Metascore: 52/100 (5 reviews)
Growing up poor in Madras, India, Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar earns admittance to Cambridge University during WWI, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy.

The Buzz: Polite reviews of this biopic indicate that Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel make it a worthwhile view despite shortcomings with the script and its direction. Writer/director Matt Brown is due to get more attention for his next project: he wrote the screenplay for London Town, a punk-rock memoir centered around The Clash that stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as frontman Joe Strummer.
