Connect smartphone reviews are written with the needs of photographers in mind. We focus on camera features, performance and image quality.

The Huawei Mate S was launched at IFA 2015 and with its 5.5-inch full HD screen it is, in terms of dimensions, a compromise between the 5.2-inch P8 and the 6-inch Mate 8. Specification-wise it is closer to the P8; its 13MP 4-Color RGBW image sensor is coupled with an F2.0 aperture and an optical image stabilization system. Like the P8, the Mate S uses an image processor that is independent from the main system chip. The front camera comes with an 8MP resolution and a front flash that produces a slightly diffused light.

The Mate S's build quality firmly places it into the premium segment of the market. It comes with metal edges, a slightly curved back and a water-resistant body. There is a fingerprint sensor for added security and the octa-core chipset is combined with 3GB of RAM and either 32 or 64GB of storage. Huawei is also offering a premium version that comes with the same camera as the standard model but offers 128GB of internal memory and a force touch screen. Read our full review to find out how the Mate S performs when used as a camera.

The review doesn't say many good things about this phone's camera, but pictures are outstanding and not only because of your good eye, Lars, but technically too. Weird for me the review.

BAD: "Night mode requires a tripod..."
It's... a.... phone.

Huawei's marketing and product management teams are really living in dream land, and call me a Huawei basher all you want.

In Australia Huawei Mate S Grey stock $683.00, Panasonic CM1 local stock $599.00. Samsung S7 $809.29 Grey stock If I want a camera that can make calls I take the CM1. If I want a phone that can take picture I take the S7. It will be crazy for someone to pick up one of these China made premium models.

In Germany, on average, the Huawei is about twice cheaper than the Samsung. *Australian problems*

Seems like if you are buying this for the camera you will be disappointed.

I wonder how thick it would be if SONY designs a 1/1.7" or 2/3" sensor + 30mm f/2.0 lens module. Wasn't there something about a curved sensor that will reduce lens stack height?

I'd like to have a 1 inch Sensor, like the CM1, and 35mm/F2 prime lens, perhaps 28/F2.

But a curved 1/1.7" stacked Exmor RS Sensor would be way nice enough, too. ;)

Never saw the price listed. Why would anyone review a product and not indicate the price? The reviews on the main DP site are much better.

Has the iPhone met its match? New camera King?

Have to wait till September with the new iPhone, Note, LG big phone and 960XL.

iPhone is no longer camera king for a loooong time.

Technically iphone camera may not be king. However it's combo (software, OS and Camera) is still the best deployment currently in market. Advantage of a close system.

Just remember, there are many people who don't care about RAW, ISO, shutter speed....etc. Thry take their phone out and take snaps, upload to their FBI, Twitter.... etc. Tech geeks that do spec counting will not pick an iPhone in the first place.
