I'd say we've pretty much covered it around here as it pertains to "Birdman." Interviews with Alejandro González Iñárritu, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Andrea Riseborough, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis & Amy Ryan, etc. I've banged the gong for Keaton this season (I have a favorite, sue me) and the Academy seemed receptive enough. We've even gone deep on the costuming of it and the creation of the iconic Birdman superhero suit. The movie is out there in the world now, though, dealing in the court of public opinion. This weekend the film expanded to 50 more locations, so it's certainly closer to some of you now that it was last week. And given that it's been such a hotly anticipated entry this season, I can't leave it without hearing your thoughts. So if you see it this weekend/week, head on back here with a note or two and vote in our poll. »

The supernatural thriller “Ouija” has summoned a box office win, ahead of Keanu Reeves’ actioner “John Wick.”
Universal’s séance pic scared up $8.3 million in the U.S. on Friday and has a weekend win in its future as it heads toward a $20 million opening. “John Wick” isn’t too far behind with $15 million, while Bill Murray’s comedy “St. Vincent” climbed into the top five as it expanded nationwide.
Directed by Stiles White and starring a crop of newcomers, including Daren Kagasoff and Olivia Cooke, “Ouija” centers on a group of teens who accidentally summon dark powers when attempting to make contact with a recently deceased friend.
It’s no surprise that the “Ouija” topped the box office, considering that Halloween is only a week away and that the film carries a PG-13 rating that broadens its appeal to its target audience of teens.

I love this time of year. The weather starts to cool off, football games start to matter and Hollywood releases some incredible movies that will be in play during Award season. That brings me to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s incredible new film, Birdman. Made to look like one long shot, Birdman stars Michael Keaton as an actor who once played an iconic superhero and now faces troubles with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory. While some movies have incredible performances or a great script, Birdman is one of those rare films where everything across the board is memorable. "Birdman" is the latest film from "21 Grams" and "Babel" director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Actually, that might not be the real title of the movie, as journalists received the following message prior to the screening: "Please use the film's full title, "Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance," the first time the film is mentioned in an article. " Meanwhile, on IMDb the title is listed with brackets: "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)."
If this seems a mix of confusing and pedantic, then that's in keeping with the tone of much of the film. There's a lot to admire about this work, but it also feels like it's trying too damn hard at times to be quirky and different, right down to the convoluted title.

“A thing is a thing, not what is said of that thing.” That’s a message on a postcard displayed on the dressing room mirror of Riggan Thompson (Michael Keaton) in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance). With that phrase in mind, I feel it’s best to simply say, “Go see the movie. Then we can talk about it.” I could leave this review at that considering the film brings into question the role of the critic when an actor, director, or artist puts their heart and soul on the line for his or her art. But just plainly urging you to see the movie is also counter-productive when there is so much love, effort, and ideas pulsating from this work of art. And it is just that. Birdman is a work of art. Don’t take my word for it though, go and see it for yourself. »

Chicago – There are parts of “Birdman” that are absolutely breathtaking, in dialogue, performance and visual acumen. Even its subtitle, “The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance” has a wonderful payoff. Michael Keaton provides an Oscar worthy performance as the title character.

“Rhythm is everything in cinema,” says director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
Making the unique choice for the Birdman soundtrack, Iñárritu went with an almost total drum score by four-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez.
Sanchez is considered by many critics and musicians alike to be one of the most prominent drummers, bandleaders and composers of his generation.
Sanchez will open the 2014 Hollywood Music in Media Awards with a special drum performance from Birdman. Held at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood on Tuesday, November 4, Sanchez will play his critically acclaimed drum score live to a scene from the film.

Ouija, another micro-budget pic from Blumhouse Prods., is likely to take the weekend, despite Universal keeping this one away from the critics (Danger, Will Robinson!). It opens tonight at 8 Pm in over 2,000 theaters before its Friday run of 2,857. Universal is thinking it could do high-teens, but the horror crowd comes out in force the first weekend and this one is appealing to teen girls and the Hispanic and African American sectors which tend to come out in groups to see films. Good news for this one, so if that happens, figure it could do anywhere from $20M-$24M. The audiences for horror films always seem to come out in force and then the drop-off comes the second weekend. But this second weekend will be Halloween.

Once Birdman starts it doesn't stop until the film runs out and even then its energy seems to bleed into your veins as you exit the theater. It's a story of actors and the stage, artists and their critics. It's about the desire to be somebody as much as it's the fear of being a nobody. It tells of a world where artists are no longer recognized for their talent, but instead for the larger-than-life characters (literal and figurative) they play. Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is one such artist. Years ago, Riggan played Birdman in a trilogy of big budget, billion dollar blockbusters. The franchise was a massive hit and he turned down a lot of money for Birdman 4. Now he finds himself at his wits end, quite literally haunted by the character that made him famous while at the same time attempting to become the actor he's always dreamed of being. »

The Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill buddy comedy hit 22 Jump Street is being re-released by Sony on October 24, in a distribution and marketing move that is kind of odd, given that the film is now at $191M domestically and $137.4M internationally. Usually this is done to reach some kind of box office benchmark, but given that it’s already at $328.4M worldwide and is unlikely to make another $9M domestically, it has us scratching our heads. The DVD comes out on October 28th so why would you re-release it into theaters four days before?
According to one Sony exec, “It’s essentially a promotional run, a chance for audiences to see the No. 1 comedy of the year on the big screen before its home entertainment launch. Not trying to hit any milestone per se. Always good for audiences to enjoy together before home entertainment kicks in.” Okaaay. I still don’t get it. »

But already Fox Searchlight has sealed the deal, putting their faith in the Canadian-born filmmaker once again. Brad Pitt's "Fury" war movie took first place at the domestic box office this weekend with $24 million, which is one of the best openings of all time for a World War II film behind "Pearl Harbor" ($59 million), "Inglourious Basterds" ($38 million) and "Saving Private Ryan ($31 million).
