Top Ten Tuesday – Top Ten White People Doing The Right Thing

30 August 2016 3:11 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I think everyone in this country should be aware by now that our race relations are at an all time low.  It seems every time we hear the news another black citizen has been shot by the police or police have been shot by someone angry about these shootings.  It cannot continue.  We as a nation cannot keep going down this road.

I have always sympathized with Black Americans.  In fact as a Scot and Irish American I have always sympathized with anyone who ever got pushed around, starting with Native Americans, Asians, Jewish immigrants, women of any ethnic group, Hispanics from any country.

I also sympathize with the people who are tasked with law enforcement.  It’s a tough job.  I had some training in that area.  A couple of years ago I was hired by a Security company and was trained in unarmed, and armed, uniformed security.   I »

Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. may join Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express remake

18 August 2016 7:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Now that Leslie Odom Jr. has finished his run as Aaron Burr in 2016’s much-talked about Broadway show Hamilton, the actor seems to be setting his sights on the film industry once again. Variety reports that Odom Jr. is in negotiations to join the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express remake.

Murder on the Orient Express is, of course, a classic Agatha Christie mystery novel, which revolves around Hercule Poirot, a Belgian detective, who must solve a murder aboard a stopped passenger train.

While Odom Jr.’s role wasn’t revealed in the write-up, the outlet confirmed that Branagh will be playing Poirot; as of now, these are the only two actors attached to the project,

Adapting the book for the screen certainly allows for having a wide variety of characters with different backgrounds and idiosyncrasies, so with Odom Jr.’s casting, Branagh seems to be »

Emmy-Nominated Actors and Their Directors on Collaboration

12 August 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Anthony Hemingway, who directed half the episodes of FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” recalls being on set with Cuba Gooding Jr., who played Simpson. They were filming a scene during episode four that showed O.J. behind bars, mentally unraveling.

“I literally just said, ‘Cry.’ And he, like a baby, started,” Hemingway says. “After we cut he started to curse me out: ‘Mother f—r. Only you can make me do this s—t.’”

An unusually close bond between actor and director is a bit of a throughline among those nominated for Emmys this year for lead performance in a limited series or TV movie. Idris Elba, nominated for “Luther,” has worked with director Sam Miller on eight previous episodes as well as the feature “No Good Deed.” Susanne Bier directed Tom Hiddleston in all six episodes of AMC’s “The Night Manager,” and could see a lot more of the »

Nate Parker leads a slave uprising as Nat Turner in the first trailer for “The Birth of a Nation.” Few words are spoken as evocative images from the film are edited together to Nina Simone’s haunting cover of Billie Holiday’s classic “Strange Fruit.” Parker not only stars, but directed and wrote the feature, based on a story by Jean McGianni Celestin, about the most successful slave rebellion in American history. “Submit yourselves to your masters with all respect,” Parker’s Turner tells a group of fellow slaves in the trailer. “The Birth of a Nation” premiered to raves back in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Fox Searchlight picked up distribution rights for a reported record-breaking $17.5 million at the fest. The film won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The Birth Of Nation Trailer Debuts – Directed By And Stars Nate Parker

15 April 2016 11:11 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Fox Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for director Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation.

Set against the antebellum South, The Birth Of A Nation follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

In his Sundance Film Festival review, The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy says the film, “offers up more than enough in terms of intelligence, insight, historical research and religious nuance to not at all be considered a missed opportunity. Far more of the essentials made it into the film than not; its makers’ dedication and minute attention are constantly felt, and the subject matter is still rare enough onscreen as to be welcome and needed, »

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, a.k.a. the hugely popular comedy duo Key & Peele, star in New Line Cinema’s action comedy Keanu.  The two play Clarence and Rell, cousins who live in the city but are far from streetwise. When Rell’s beloved kitten, Keanu, is catnapped, the hopelessly straight-laced pair must impersonate ruthless killers in order to infiltrate a street gang and retrieve the purloined feline. But the incredibly adorable kitten becomes so coveted that the fight over his custody creates a gang war, forcing our two unwitting heroes to take the law into their own hands.

Peter Atencio (“Key and Peele,” “The Last Man on Earth”) directed the film from a script written by Jordan Peele and Alex Rubens (“Key and Peele,” “Community”). Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Peter Principato, Paul Young, and Joel Zadak produced the film, with Ben Ormand serving as executive producer.

Francis Ford Coppola says it’s ‘a pity’ George Lucas made all those ‘Star Wars’ movies

3 February 2016 12:07 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

What’s happening in an alternate universe out there where George Lucas followed up Thx 1138 and American Graffiti not with Star Wars but with something else? If there were no Star Wars (or fewer Star Wars), what cinematic gifts would Lucas have given to the world instead? Would there be anything greater than Red Tails and Strange Magic left in him? That’s the perennial question Francis Ford Coppola has us thinking about again. In a Vanity Fair story published on Wednesday, the Godfather filmmaker said this of his American Zoetrope co-founder: “George [Lucas] is kind of a genius, but I think it’s a pity he got so [absorbed in that one franchise]. I hope George isn’t offended, but the truth of the matter is that Star Wars cost us 10 new George Lucas films that would have been wonderful.” What original work would we see if Hollywood weren’t so focused on sequels and remakes? »

Sundance: 19 Biggest Breakthrough Performances

Sundance has always served as a springboard to launch the careers of under-the-radar actors — just ask Michael B. Jordan (“Fruitvale Station”), Carey Mulligan (“An Education”), Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Ryan Gosling (“The Believer”) — and the 2016 edition of the festival was no exception. Variety’s critics Justin Chang, Guy Lodge and Geoff Berkshire and film reporters Ramin Setoodeh and Brent Lang weighed in on their favorite breakthrough performances at this year’s Sundance.

Babak Anvari’s wartime creeptacular has already drawn well-deserved comparisons to another Sundance-premiered horror hit, “The Babadook,” and along similar lines, Rashidi’s intense yet fine-grained work here deserves to be spoken of in the same lofty tones as Essie Davis’. As a fiercely intelligent, progressive-minded Iranian woman infuriated by the direction of her country since the Islamic Revolution, Rashidi plays her character like a musical instrument going slowly out of »

You can feel his blood pulsing through every frame." Now the film has set off the fiercest bidding war in Sundance history. And we're collecting reviews as they come in. » - David Hudson »
