Understanding Royalties

Here's an overview of what you need to know about how royalties are calculated. You earn royalties every time a book is printed to fulfill a new customer order place on Amazon.com, Amazon's European websites, your CreateSpace eStore, or through sales channels offered with Expanded Distribution. A royalty is calculated based on the list price you set for the location where your book is printed. We take our share (which is comprised of a percentage of the list price for each sales channel, the fixed charged and per page charged based on the print location) from the list price and the rest is your royalty earned.

The following scenarios are meant to give you an example breakdown of royalty calculations for books.

Scenario A

For a 184 page black and white book, you set your USD list price at $8.99. A customer purchases your book on Amazon.com and a book is printed to fulfill that order.
Sales Channel % = $3.60
Fixed Charge = $0.85
Per Page Charge = $2.20
Your Royalty = $2.34

Scenario B

For a 184 page black and white book, you set your GBP list price at £5.99 and your EUR list price at €6.99. A customer purchases your book on Amazon.co.uk via the Amazon Europe channel and a book is printed in continental Europe to fulfill that order.
Sales Channel % = €2.80
Fixed Charge = €0.60
Per Page Charge = €2.20
Your Royalty = €1.39

How we calculate our share

We calculate our share by taking a percentage of the list price, plus a fixed charge. Some books may also have a per-page charge.
