Experience Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation with new live poster

Nate Parker's debut feature The Birth of a Nation shook the Sundance Film Festival when it premiered there earlier this year.

A topical film about a former slave who leads a liberation movement in 1831, and the violent consequences that are endured, The Birth of a Nation looks like it will fall in line with notable works such as 12 Years a Slave andSelma. While it's a historical drama, it reflects a prevalent problem in our society, and films like this are extremely necessary and relevant.

While we anticipate watching the film in October, there's a new "live poster" to get us excited. A new trend that envisions poster artwork into a stunning, short video visual, the live poster for The Birth of a Nation is extremely powerful.

Check out the poster below and see The Birth of a Nation in theatres on October 7th! »

Top 5 basketball movies

We don’t know about you, but we haven’t been this excited about the Raptors in a while. They’re having a record best-in-franchise season, and are representing Toronto well on the international basketball stage.

Tonight, the Raps are in Cleveland, playing the first game of the Eastern Conference finals against the Cavaliers. It’s likely going to be a tough game, as the Cavs are easily a worthy opponent of the Raptors.

If your home TV just doesn’t cut it for a game like this, then head on over to a Cineplex theatre where you’ll be able to catch the game on the big screen with other fans. We’ve already written about our top 5 reasons to watch the Raptors play on the big screen, and now we have our top 5 basketball movies to get you in the mood for tonight’s game.

Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph and Josh Gad on emotions and The Angry Birds Movie

Anger is one of our most natural emotions.

For some reason, however, we're lead to believe that it's a negative thing. If we're going to learn anything from The Angry Birds Movie, it's that anger is okay. It's an important lesson for both kids and adults, as everyone should let out their inner rage when they have to.

The film based on the popular game looks to be a hilarious adventure, with humour that is suited for all age groups. There's plenty of fun to be had with The Angry Birds Movie, because honestly, being angry can be pretty funny.

We sat down with three of the film's stars, Jason SudeikisMaya Rudolph and Josh Gad, to talk about their film and working with the all-star comedy voice cast, which also includes Bill HaderKate McKinnonKeegan-Michael Key and Danny McBride.

5 things we learned about Steven Spielberg's The Bfg in Cannes

They say to never meet your heroes for they’re sure to disappoint, yet sitting in a room with Steven Spielberg, a director that has shaped my journey through cinema like few others, was pretty darned cool.

Here at Cannes we’re used to seeing some big players, but the mega director/producer may be in a different league, at least in terms of the Hollywood contingent. Steven was here back in 1982 with E.T. and presided over the Jury a few years back that awarded Blue Is The Warmest Colour the top prize over the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. For some reason, I’ve managed to forgive him for that slight. »

Star Wars and X-Men with Stan Lee and Peter Mayhew at the Calgary Expo

16 May 2016 1:52 PM, PDT

Over 10 years ago, the Calgary Expo started in one building with one guest: Peter Mayhew. Since then, it’s become one of the biggest events in Canada with well over 100,000 attendees and now spans the entire Stampede grounds in Calgary. There are a lot of reasons these events are growing and thriving, but a large part of it is due to the rise in popularity of sci-fi, horror, and superhero movies. What used to be “fringe” has crept into the mainstream. This year was special for Calgary since that very first guest made his triumphant return! I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with everyone’s favourite Wookie when I hosted the “Spotlight on Peter Mayhew.”

Being a diehard Star Wars fan, I couldn’t resist hosting it as Han Solo! (Also I hoped that seeing Han and Chewie together again might be therapeutic for fans…) Peter, like Chewbacca, »

Check out Easter Eggs you might have missed in Captain America: Civil War

16 May 2016 1:46 PM, PDT

Captain America: Civil War is still making waves at the box office, as Marvel fans seem to be loving the Russo brothers’ take on the Captain and Tony Stark’s big face off.

The latest installment from Marvel Studios features a number of Easter Eggs: little references, jokes, and visual motifs that act as a sort of homage to previous movies, TV shows, comics, or other pop culture references. This is standard operating procedure for Marvel movies, as their source material is so rich.

Naturally, Captain America: Civil War has a ton of Easter Eggs that you may have missed, so check out our list below to catch up. We have to warn you, if you’re trying your hardest to avoid any spoilers at all, then you may not want to read on. However, these Easter Eggs don’t give anything too juicy away about the actual plot, so »

Looking at the amazing cast of Black Panther: Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael B. Jordan

16 May 2016 11:49 AM, PDT

This weekend's casting news around Black Panther has made it one of our most anticipated superhero movies ever.

We've already seen Chadwick Boseman in the role, as he made his debut in Captain America: Civil War and killed it. Diversity is a major problem facing Hollywood right now, and films like Black Panther are going to help solve this issue. That's only one of the reasons we are so excited for it. This weekend we learned that Lupita Nyong'o will be in the film, most likely as a love interest, while Michael B. Jordan has been cast in the film, and the rumour is that he'll be the villain.

2018 can't come soon enough. Director Ryan Coogler has blown us away with both of his films, and is one of the best emerging filmmakers out there. Between Fruitvale Station and Creed, Coogler has proven himself both with more independent features and »

Quiz: Bad movie neighbours

16 May 2016 8:30 AM, PDT

Consider yourself lucky if you’ve never had a bad neighbor. It’s not a fun time, and we’re speaking from experience.

However, we’ve never lived next to a sorority, as the main characters in this week’s Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising do. The first Neighbors film saw young couple Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne living next to a frat house headed by Zac Efron, and this time around a sorority has moved in.

Chloe Grace Moretz and Kiersey Clemons star as two sorority members intent on keeping their new house, while Zac Efron and Dave Franco return to help kick the girls out of the neighbourhood. The likes of Lisa Kudrow, Selena Gomez, Hannibal Buress and Christopher Mintz-Plasse have joined in on the fun this time around, and we can’t wait to see all the crazy stunts that will go down.

Of course, the Neighbors movies »

Giants are on the attack in the new trailer for The Bfg

16 May 2016 7:15 AM, PDT

A new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the beloved children’s story The Bfg has just arrived, and it has our inner child more excited than ever.

The Bfg, or Big Friendly Giant, is based on Roald Dahl’s story of a young orphan, Sophie, and her giant friend. Sophie is kidnapped by the Bfg, only to realize that he needs her help to keep the bigger, nastier giants away. Newly-minted Oscar winner Mark Rylance plays the Bfg, while Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, and Jemaine Clement also star.

The Bfg really is a childhood classic, so whether you read it in school or on your own, you’ll be understandably excited to see that the new trailer looks like it will give the book justice. If the story of The Bfg is new to you, then that’s all the more reason to look forward to its release! »

Ryan Gosling talks learning to dance and doing comedy for The Nice Guys

16 May 2016 7:00 AM, PDT

Ryan Gosling is having fun.

Wait. What? Alert the media!

Yes, the brooding actor born in London, Ontario, is all smiles these days.

Known for his difficult youth (which included a stint as part of TV’s "The All New Mickey Mouse Club") and for specializing in disturbed or unhappy characters, Gosling has been lightening up of late.

Light in Gosling terms, anyway.

Following his hilarious turn as a Wall Street scumbag in The Big Short, the actor comes roaring back this month in the period detective comedy The Nice Guys. His inept private eye Holland March spends most of the movie with his arm in a cast, courtesy of the rough enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), who forces March to take part in an investigation involving a missing girl, a dead porn star and the mob in 1970s Los Angeles.

There’s lots of shooting, bumbling and put-downs, including »
