The Thing (2011)
Good movie. Definitely worth a watch.
Firt off, I just want to say that this movie is a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), NOT a remake.
So comparing this movie with the original (well, the original remake), wouldn't be right.
This movie doesn't try to be as good, or better. It's simply a homage to John Carpenter's movie, and a story made for all the fans who since 1982 wondered what really happened at the Norwegian Research Station.
We've already seen the Thing and what it can do, in the first movie, so of course we don't get the same element of surprise while watching this prequel. We know what to expect. The only thing left unanswered is what really happened. Does this automatically make it a bad movie? No, I don't think so.
The Thing (1982), is better than The Thing (2011)..but that's only because of Kurt Russel, and the fact that the concept of the "Thing" itself was something new back then, and never seen before.
Anyway: If you're a hardcore fan of John Carpenter's movie, you definitely should check out this one as well (if only for the back story).
For dagene er onde (1991)
Fairly decent.
Haven't heard of this movie? Don't be surprised. I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago. I had never heard of it before, and neither had my parents or anyone else I know. How come?
Well first of all this is a Norwegian movie from 1991. This is long before Max Manus and other "big budget" movies were made in Norway. Most likely For Dagene Er Onde was sent a couple of times on domestic TV (short time after its release 'cause it hasn't been on for years), so most people just haven't heard about it.
Except from an interesting plot and a few famous and known actors (not that there are many good actors in Norway), there's little interesting about the movie. The acting is decent but the film has a slow pace all through. There was one scene in particular that made me laugh, and that was the one where famous award-winning Bjørn Sundquist snaps of rage at the cows in the barn :P oh and the scene where he yells at his mother!
If you find this video on VHS (I doubt there is a DVD-release, I have the VHS myself), and you don't mind reading text since it's in Norwegian, you should watch this movie! If not for the thrill ('cause there ain't any), then at least for the fjord scenery.
I give this movie 5 stars out of 10
Ofelas (1987)
One of a few good Norwegian movies.
Many foreigners might be put off by the idea of watching a movie with subtitles, especially in countries like Spain, France, Italy and Germany where movies usually are dubbed into the native language (which is not the case in Norway). Even though the movie is produced in Norway, the cast is Sami and the Sami language is used throughout the entire film. Therefore most Norwegians find themselves watching this movie with subtitles anyway, which makes the plot in itself more believable.
Who else is better to tell a story from a Sami legend than a Sami writer/director? For its time the movie was, and still is, outstanding, only to be matched by "Orions Belt".
Personally I think the acting could have been better, but the plot was great, and so was the directing as well.
"Ofelas"/"Veiviseren" is truly a Sami/Norwegian treasure of culture! 9 out of 10 ~
Il capo dei capi (2007)
If you're a hardcore mafia-fan, watch this!
When I first got this 4 disc DVD-set as a gift from a sister I thought it wouldn't be as good as it was, but it turned out to be brilliant! The acting is truly outstanding, and there's enough action for those who require that. Almost everything in this series happened with few exceptions. It's important for the viewer to know that Biagio Schiro is a character made up in order to develop the plot through the timelines. The character probably represents all of the brave men fighting against the mafia.
I can't state enough that this TV-series is not the usual romantic view on the mafia you see in The Godfather etc etc.
I give this a 10 out of 10 because of actor performances, setting, plot, dialog, and the fact that someone actually had stones to make this TV-series in a more realistic way.
That been said you should buy this, it's definitely money well spent!
