Cannes Film Review: ‘Dog Eat Dog’

20 May 2016 4:11 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

They say prostitution is the world’s oldest profession, but that’s only because crime doesn’t pay, or else robbers, murderers and thieves would surely come first. Their exploits have been the stuff of cinema since the medium’s earliest days, to the extent that the crime genre has become all but calcified — which surely explains why director Paul Schrader goes so far out of his way to break all the rules with “Dog Eat Dog.” Coming off the indignity of having “Dying of the Light” taken away from him, the “Taxi Driver” screenwriter-turned-director seems determined to try out some new tricks. He means for the result to feel fresh and electric, but instead, his anarchic approach (one could even call it “criminal,” considering how it deliberately disobeys genre laws) frequently verges on incompetent, as most of the time, rejecting the obvious choice leads to choosing a worse one. »

Deadline is reporting that Ed Harris (The Rock) and Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad) have been cast in The Last Full Measure, the new film from director Todd Robinson (Lonely Hearts).

In addition to the casting of Eastwood and Harris, Laurence Fishburne (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Morgan Freeman (Now You See Me 2) are also in talks to join the cast.

The website states that the film is based on “the true story of a present-day cover-up investigation and follows young Pentagon investigator Scott Huffman (Eastwood) as he battles the political machine in Washington. He reluctantly teams with veterans of Operation Abilene to convince Congress to award the Medal of Honor to a courageous Air Force medic, William Pitsenbarger, who sacrificed his life saving more than 60 soldiers ambushed by Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.”

Filming is set to start this Autumn.

‘USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage’ Trailer: Nicolas Cage Faces Death by Sharks in the World War II Drama

Over the past few years, Nicolas Cage hasn’t been making very good choices when it comes to the movies in which he chooses to star. It’s a bummer that the man who starred in the likes of Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, Raising Arizona and Face/Off has stooped so low as to star in a […]

The Magnificent Remake: How and Why Remade Movies Succeed and Fail

22 April 2016 6:40 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tony Black on remakes, and how and why they success and fail…

Harking back to the days of big stars headlining even bigger films, The Magnificent Seven trailer exploded online this week showcasing the always A-list Denzel Washington alongside, among others, Hollywood’s newest megastar Chris Pratt, in a remake of the legendary 1960’s Yul Brynner headlining Western. It’s just one of a flood of remakes we’ve seen over the last decade, a tide that shows no sign of slowing down with dozens more either about to land, or in production and pre-production. Edward Gardiner here on Flickering Myth recently argued how it’s fine to enjoy remakes of the classic movies we enjoyed as children or younger adults, and while many never recapture the glory of the original they do at least bring great pictures back into the public consciousness. Criminal Review – Costner And Crew Posit Psychological Action To No Effect At All

18 April 2016 3:52 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Kevin Costner is in a strange place in his career, though his odd choices have managed some wins in the last few years, and Criminal is either the result of an overly powerful actor being too interested in a film’s theory, or an actor who just has a bucket list of roles he’s checking off.

Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a special breed of psychopath who fits in well for an experimental medical procedure that hopes to transfer memories from one person to another. CIA operative, Bill Pope (Ryan Reynolds) is the only person who knows where he stashed “The Dutchman” (Michael Pitt), but Pope gets killed before he can tell anyone, and the CIA is scrambling now, because if the Dutchman falls into the wrong hands, he can hand over the U.S. military arsenal.

After Jericho undergoes the procedure, more than Pope’s memories infiltrate his brain. »

Movie Review – Criminal (2016)

15 April 2016 7:50 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Criminal, 2016.

Directed by Ariel Vromen.

Starring Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Gal Gadot, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Pitt, Amaury Nolasco, Antje Traue, Alice Eve, Jordi Molla, Scott Adkins, Natalie Burn, Robert Davi, and Ryan Reynolds.

Synopsis:

In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative’s memories, secrets, and skills are implanted into a death-row inmate in hopes the he will complete the operative’s mission.

At least Criminal makes it clear what kind of illogical, loopy brain-dead experience will unfold, as it begins with protagonist (more like sociopath recruited for a government experiment to do some good) Jericho (Kevin Costner in what is easily the most ugly, gruff, and violent role of his long-running acting career) narrating to the audience his creed, which is literally “You hurt me, I hurt you worse”. That’s the kind of screenwriting (one of its writers actually penned Michael Bay »

Film Review: ‘Criminal’

7 April 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Considering the number of bad high-concept action-movie ideas that have passed all the way through development, the notion of adapting “Flowers for Algernon” into a Luc Besson-style hyperviolent spy pic really isn’t a terrible one. That’s the basic thrust of Ariel Vromen’s “Criminal,” which casts Kevin Costner as a brain-damaged, sociopathic convict implanted with the memories of a dead CIA agent, giving him a three-day window in which to unravel an international conspiracy, and perhaps also learn the meaning of love, before the effects wear off. Unfortunately, the film ends up in a position best described as the top of the bottom of the barrel: a tetchy, pummeling experience devoid of any real wit, invention or suspense, but boasting enough of a professional sheen and a sufficiently stacked cast to carve out some niche space overseas and on VOD. Domestic box office should be a different story. »

WWE Buy Out Interest? In Ring Argument on Raw! – WrestleTalk News

WWE Buy Out Interest?

Our top story today is a potential buy out of the WWE.

The New York Post is reporting that there’s a “strong rumour” that media mogul John de Mol – which I believe translates into John The Mole – wants to buy the WWE outright if Vince McMahon ever decided to sell. He’s one of the guys behind a bunch of hit TV shows like Fear Factor, Big Brother and The Voice.

So what? You say. What makes The Mole different from any other crazy billionaire wanting a new vanity purchase? The fact that The Mole’s company, Talpa Beheer, already acquired a 6% stake in the WWE last August.

OctaFinance reported back then that Talpa »

A second clip for the upcoming Criminal movie has landed online. Kevin Costner leads the impressive cast of the movie, which arrives in cinemas on April 15th. Check out the Criminal movie clip below.

We’ll be featuring Criminal a lot over the next couple of days, and we’ll even have a chat with the film’s director Ariel Vroman on these pages early next week, and of course, we’ll also have our review too. Here’s a bit more about the film.

Starring Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, The Proposal) and Oscar-winner Kevin Costner (Draft Day, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Criminal follows a CIA operative (Reynolds), whose memories and skills are implanted into an unpredictable and dangerous death-row inmate (Costner) in a last-ditch effort to stop an international terrorist plot. »

Exclusive Clip: Kevin Costner endures head games in 'Criminal'

5 April 2016 10:14 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Kevin Costner is a bad man…or is he? In the upcoming film Criminal, Costner plays Jericho Stewart, a death row inmate who has had the skills of a deceased CIA operative (Ryan Reynolds) implanted in his brain. The feds do this so that they can stop an international terrorist. HitFix has an exclusive clip of the first time Stewart realizes that something’s afoot. In one of the better collection of actors you’ll find, Costner (a two-time Oscar winner) shares the scene with Tommy Lee Jones (also an Oscar winner) and Gary Oldman (an Oscar nominee). As you can imagine, Costner’s character is none too pleased to find he’s basically had a hole drilled in the base of his head. It’ll only get worse when he finds out what this all means. Criminal was written by Douglas Cook and David Weisberg, the team behind The Rock. »

Sorry 'Justice League' Fans, Hans Zimmer Has Retired From Superhero Music

30 March 2016 4:30 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

It's rare that people who work strictly behind the camera on movies become household names. It happens to directors and writers if their movies either make enough money or stir enough controversy, but the household name status usually stops with those crew positions.  Unless you're a composer like Hans Zimmer. The German-born artist has been so integral to the music of some of the most popular movies ever made that even casual fans have come to associate his name with loud, epic music. Sure, Zimmer has been responsible for some quiet, restrained scores (Rain Man and The Ring come to mind), but it's his bombastic work on movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, The Rock, Sherlock Holmes and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy that really get most fans riled...

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi review – a barrage of noise and posturing

31 January 2016 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Director Michael Bay checks nuance at the door for this politically slanted take on the 2012 Us compound attack in Libya

In a Wall Street Journal article entitled Hollywood Goes to Benghazi, former security contractor Mark Geist (whose real-life experiences partially inspired this film) recalls testing the seriousness with which ’splosions enthusiast Michael Bay intended to tell his story. Noting that “he always has a girl’s butt in every Transformers, Pearl Harbor, The Rock”, Geist jokingly suggested a moment in 13 Hours that might accommodate such a shot. But Bay’s mind was on higher things. “He’s like, ‘No, we’re not gonna do it’,” Geist told the WSJ. “That showed me how serious he was about this movie…”

The absence of gratuitous butt shots aside, 13 Hours is very much business as usual for Bay; a barrage of noisy and largely indecipherable action, most notable for an Adhd visual style »

I admire Michael Bay as a director, I really do. He is a filmmaker without guile, his images transparent in their vapid grandiloquence. The qualities and values of maximalism, crassness and jingoism that have consistently garnered mockery and acrimonious distain by many are not ones audiences are cleverly exposing, but most often are simply accurate characterizations of the attitudes such films as the two Bad Boys, Pearl Harbor, and his solely-helmed Transformers franchise directly espouse. It may be hard to imagine a film more gaudily self-evident in its values and the force of its aesthetics as the sprawling effects goliath and techno-anti-humanist Transformers: Age of Extinction, but in fact Bay’s most tidily budgeted and CGI free films of recent years, 2013’s true crime Pain & Gain and this year’s true war 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi are his most honest and perceptive, and, because of this, his best. »

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review: “Bay’s best”

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review: Michael Bay tells the true life story of the 2012 attack on a U.S. compound – and it’s actually pretty good. 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi review

It would be quite easy to dismiss Michael Bay‘s latest effort after the damp squibs that were the overblown Pain & Gain, most, if not all of the Transformers movies and, not forgetting, the awful Pearl Harbor – but 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi could just be his best film – yes, better than The Rock and Armageddon.

Okay, so we’re not measuring this up against much, as Bay has not had the best of luck when it comes to critical reception, but his films have grossed a combined amount of $5.7 billion worldwide. With 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, Bay tells a true story about a group of six ex-miltary operatives who find themselves »

Michael Bay brings a true story to the big screen in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi. Here's our review...

This is a true story,” Michael Bay tells us via one of those military telex-style captions at the start of 13 Hours. Then he blows a lot of stuff up. It’s a misreading of the supposed impact of letting the viewer know they’re witnessing an account of true events. The point is that you then deliver something remarkable, stranger than fiction, leaving us shaking our heads in wonder that this really happened. But I can easily wrap my head around the premise that, in a collapsed Middle Eastern state with no government, overrun by mercenaries and Islamist extremists, a fair bit of stuff might get blown up. As early as the opening captions, Michael Bay has failed.

Some context: I think Michael Bay is great when »
