Melissa McCarthy's 'The Boss' Narrowly Tops 'Batman v Superman' for Weekend #1

10 April 2016 7:20 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Melissa McCarthy's The Boss and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are in a tight race for the weekend number one with a mere $45,000 giving the edge to The Boss based on estimates. Also opening this weekend, Stx's Hardcore Henry fell short of expectations while Fox Searchlight's Demolition was all-too-apt a name for the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer as it managed to barely creep over a $1 million opening. Beginning with The Boss, its #1 finish is secondary to the proven star power of Melissa McCarthy as she top-lines yet another $20+ million opener. Excluding the limited release of St. Vincent and her small appearance in This is 40, McCarthy's streak of starring in a film that has grossed over $20 million in its opening weekend has now been extended to six, going back to 2011's Bridesmaids. Not even the overwhelmingly negative reviews or lackluster "C+" CinemaScore could prevent The Boss from posting a $23.48 million weekend, »

Barbra Streisand, Barry Levinson Reviving ‘Gypsy’ for STX Entertainment (Exclusive)

10 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Barbra Streisand may realize her dreams of bringing Mama Rose to the big screen.

STX Entertainment is in advanced negotiations to make Gypsy with the Grammy and Oscar winner taking the lead role, and Oscar-winner Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) directing. Production on the film hit a snag last fall after Universal Pictures put the project into turnaround. It had been developing “Gypsy” for several years, stretching back to STX Chairman Adam Fogelson’s days as the movie studio’s head.

Streisand will produce the film with Joel Silver (“Lethal Weapon”), with Richard Lagravenese (“The Fisher King”) writing the script. The actress is involved in developing the script.

It’s a meaty role for Streisand, one that will see her playing one of the most infamous stage mothers in history and belting out such signature numbers as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” Previous actresses who have put their stamp on Mama Rose include Ethel Merman, »

Daisy Ridley Doesn't Think Rey's A Jedi... Wait, What?

57 minutes ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Mystery, destiny, and surprise . these are key elements in the Star Wars toolbox, as well as the three best words that describe Daisy Ridley's Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the large mystery surrounding the scavenger turned Jedi is who her parents may be, there's apparently another question that's been staring us down this whole time: is Rey really a Jedi? The seeds of doubt were planted this weekend, as Daisy Ridley herself dropped the bomb at the MTV Movie Awards, while talking about the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer. In addition to clarifying that Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso isn't her character's mother, Ridley turned her mind back to the future and speculated about her own character's connection to The Force. This lead to the following remarks from Ridley: I don.t know if I am a Jedi. I don.t think I am. »

No ‘Silence,’ But Paramount Still Boasts Prestige Power at CinemaCon

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Las Vegas — The oddest note in Paramount Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation Monday night, kicking off four days of footage reveals and seminars at the annual motion picture exhibitors trade show, was the exclusion of Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The Oscar-winning director’s latest film, expected to hit theaters this fall, is a presumed awards hopeful on paper. But it didn’t even warrant a mention. Nevertheless, the studio had plenty of prestige potential to show off.

Beginning with a bit of a surprise, Robert Zemeckis’ “Allied” was previewed with a solid assemblage of polished footage featuring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. The World War II drama was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump”) from a script by Oscar-nominated writer Steven Knight (“Dirty Pretty Things”). It’s also producer Graham King’s first real play along these lines since his last collaboration with Scorsese, 2011’s “Hugo.” He won the best »

Jj Abrams on Screening Room: 'We have to adapt'

2 hours ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Jj Abrams on Monday evening hinted at his support for Screening Room as he collected the CinemaCon Showman Of The Year award from the very people who stand to lose the most should the disruptive distribution platform become reality.

The development at Caesars Palace during the Paramount Pictures presentation illustrated the relative impotence of the exhibition community faced with a tide of change that threatens to engulf the traditional releasing model.

Abrams had already made public his support for Sean Parker and Prem Akkaraju’s controversial proposal before CinemaCon and offered some insight when he took to the Colosseum stage.

“Much has been said of technologies that threaten the theatre experience — and I’m no expert, and I’m open to all points of view and good ideas to keep theatres thriving — but we need to do everything we can in this age of piracy, digital technology and disruption to be thoughtful partners in the evolution of this »

Apichatpong Weerasethakul: 'My country is run by superstition'

3 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Famous for lyrical movies featuring reincarnation and talking apes, the Thai director of Uncle Boonmee also has a political side – now he is taking on Thailand’s generals with a film about sleeping soldiers

Apichatpong Weerasethakul has just stepped off a flight from Bangkok and, while he betrays no obvious signs of jetlag or exhaustion, apologises for any potential lethargy. He has come to Tate Modern for a three-day retrospective of his multifarious moving-image work – feature films, shorts, promos – the bulk of which was screened continuously for 14 hours overnight on 9 April to mark the reopening of the gallery’s Starr cinema auditorium. Weerasethakul, a charming, unfailingly polite and very neatly dressed 45 year old, says he doesn’t mind in the least that his delicately composed, subtly atmospheric films should be exhibited in such an environment; it is, he says “a celebration, a big party”.

Tom Cruise Promises ‘Incredible Set Pieces’ for ‘Mission: Impossible 6’

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Last year, Tom Cruise took CinemaCon by storm, keeping theater owners enraptured as he spun tales of how he risked life and limb by strapping himself to the side of an airplane on “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.”

The actor behind the hit spy series couldn’t make it to Las Vegas this go-round. Cruise was busy filming in London, but he still taped a video appearance for the exhibition industry confab, promising that super spy Ethan Hunt will be back for more global espionage and gravity-defying world saving. Filming will begin next fall with “Rogue Nation” director and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie returning for another adventure.

The mission may change, but the formula will stay the same.  Cruise said that there will be “…more incredible set pieces, stunts…and what I think is a very entertaining and compelling story.”

CinemaCon: ‘Baywatch’ Overflows With Bikini Jokes, Raunchy Humor

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Dwayne Johnson is slipping into David Hasselhoff’s swim trunks in “Baywatch,” and while he may be patrolling the beaches of Los Angeles County saving lives, he’s not taking himself too seriously.

Based on footage screened at CinemaCon on Monday, this is a “21 Jump Street” style re-interpretation of a venerable television franchise, one that’s not afraid to send up its source material. In the very red-band trailer, Johnson and co-star Zac Efron drop a lot of four-letter words, while joking about taking orders from their balls. There’s also a bit about the wedgie-inducing swimwear sported by the beautiful female lifeguards who make it safe to go in the water (though no glimpse of legendary “Baywatch” beauty Pamela Anderson).

“Why does this suit ride so far up our asses,” asks one female lifeguard. “I designed it that way,” answers another.

Efron seems to be channeling his “Neighbors” slacker character, »
