I do wonder why the camera world is still driven helter-skelter towards more new camera bodies with a diminishing factor of extra-gorgeous features. It takes a while for the pell-mell rush to wake up to the fact that camera body technology passed the good enough for most barrier some time ago.

Some thought that megapixel growth on micro-sensors would go on forever but it did stop and those "superior" micro-sensor cameras that both were and were expected are nowhere now to be seen.

Presently we expect FF sensors to be the new horizon but there is no "official" horizon beyond FF. Furthermore I have seen a few reports that high megapixel FF sensors are not for the average shooter as such cameras magnify all faults made in captures. Therefore there is a happy limit where images caught can amaze your friends and still gloss over technical fault detail before the lerger chip with even higher resolution show that you were really not quite up to the game. The A7s is probably more popular than the A7r for this reason alone. As well as being able to cope with low light better - which is another factor begging the question on whether there will be a fairy tale ride into ever better and better FF sensor land.

This comparison of 3 cameras done by Steve Huff demonstrated that the 12 mp high ISO A7s fared poorly in most respects compared to some others.  An A7r II would have performed better.

E-M1, X-T1, A7s – 8 side by side tests
