10 quick questions with Henry Rollins about ‘He Never Died’

One of my favourite films from last years Grimmfest was the stunning vampire movie come theological horror He Never Died, (review) which sees Henry Rollins play Jack, a social outcast, who is thrust out of his comfort zone when the outside world bangs on his door and he can’t contain his violent past. As it turns out, there are very few reasons to live when you can’t die…

With He Never Died coming to streaming service We Are Colony, we’ve teamed up with them (they know just how much I Love the film!) to bring you this special quickfire Q&A with Henry Rollins. And if you want to know more, you can see He Never Died, along with behind-the-scenes extras – like the one at the end of this interview – on We Are Colony at www.wearecolony.com/he-never-died

What was the first film that truly made an impact on you? »

This week’s theme: Keeping it 100! We are celebrating turning 100 and in honor of our celebration we are going back and playing our first and favorite game: Fact or Fiction! We dive deep into hard nosed topics like: Is any food a breakfast food if you eat it early enough? What is the best way to organize comics? And who really is ahead in the Comic book world? Before we get to that we also go over some Toy Fair news and speculate over if the release of new toys will help spoil upcoming summer blockbusters.

New horror/thriller The Samaritans, billed as “one of the most chilling stories set to fill your thoughts with permanent paranormal fear and fright” – from the minds of filmmakers Keith Collins (The Meat Puppet, Clean Cut), Doug Bollinger (Waltzing Anna, Mail Order Bride) and Cory Green (The Jersey Devil) – has started production in New Jersey.

Six friends having a weekly board game night are interrupted by a booming movie trailer voice from the sky. Inexplicably, they find themselves trapped in a horror movie. Who amongst them will turn into a homicidal killer? Who will be the sole survivor? And who will be the first to die in the shower? Struggling to break free from the stereotypes that would see them dead, each of the friends try to stay alive in whatever desperate ways they can.

Omg… We’re in a Horror Movie!!! is insane, ridiculous, over-the-top, self –aware and breaks the fourth wall in ways I didn’t think possible. The result? A hilarious film. About halfway through I wondered if »

‘Alienated’ Review

Stars: George Katt, Jen Burry, Taylor Negron | Written and Directed by Brian Ackley

Reality check: Alienated isn’t a science fiction film. I know, I know, it’s got “alien” in the title, and yes, there are UFOs involved in the story. However, Alienated is as much a sci-fi film as two pieces of bread with jam smeared lightly on the crust is a sandwich. No, this film’s filling is very much a drama, with a light sprinkling of sci-fi on top.

I found Alienated a very interesting film to watch. It quickly became apparent that this film wasn’t going to be as alien heavy as I had initially hoped, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. The more I watched the more I realised that the writing in this film is really, really good. Basically, the film is about a married couple arguing about the issues »

‘Better Call Saul 2×04: Gloves Off’ Review

“That’s a bell you don’t un-ring.”

The secret to not living in a state of perpetual regret is, of course, to make the right choice in the first place. Witness Jimmy scrambling to correct his eminently preventable error, one that saw Kim banished to document processing in the basement of Hhm, and you have all the object lesson you need in playing by the rules over taking the path of least resistance. “You’re like an alcoholic who can’t admit he has a problem,” a deeply un-self-aware Chuck, so brittle from an imagined disease that his every motion crackles and crunches thanks to the foil he wears, chides his errant brother. He’s right, though. Jimmy does what he wants and then tries to paper over the cracks. To him, life really is one big episode of Let’s Make a Deal.

Wild Eye to debut Debbie Rochon’s ‘Model Hunger’

8 March 2016 12:28 PM, PST

WildEye Releasing have announced they are set to release the directorial debut of Scream Queen Debbie Rochon, Model Hunger. After nearly 300 films, Rochon (Return to Nuke ‘Em High, Phobia, The Theater Bizarre) steps behind the camera to skewer audiences with her blood-curling take on an actress’ response to forced retirement.

Former pinup model Ginny (Lowry) had been cast aside by the heartless and exploitative modeling industry.  Ginny didn’t take rejection well and grew into a revenge-seeking, bloodthirsty, broken woman. When her new neighbors Debbie (Shepis) and Sal (Capobianco) move in, Debbie begins to notice strange things going on. Sal believes she is mentally unstable, but Debbie becomes determined to figure out what secret life Ginny is leading. Her new nosy neighbor throws a damper on Ginny’s private life: her cannibalistic addictions and ever-growing body count. Both women become determined to put an end to the other’s obsession. »

Brand new trailer & poster for ‘Hardcore Henry’

8 March 2016 9:13 AM, PST

Strap in. Hardcore Henry is an original film that was shot completely from the hero’s perspective (inspired by That online sensation from a few years ago). Hardcore Henry‘s cast includes Sharlto Copley, Danila Kozlovsky, Haley Bennett, Andrey Dementyev, Dasha Charusha, and Sveta Ustinova.

Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, »

‘Vinyl 1×04: The Racket’ Review

8 March 2016 8:53 AM, PST

“Put it into the couch, not your marriage.”

‘The Racket’ is loud, angry, and fucking hilarious. It begins with Richie taking his anger out not on his and Devon’s relationship but, at his glacially calm therapist’s suggestion, on the couch. With a tennis racket. His subsequent golden-boy claim that he’s worked out his shit is just one of the many rackets in an episode which ends with our hero seeking not catharsis but an alibi, from his estranged father no less, for Buck’s murder. Everyone’s cheating and chiseling everyone out of everything, and nobody’s in on the joke. ‘The Racket’ feels like throat-clearing from Vinyl‘s emerging voice, at once frustrated and playful, riotous and contemplative.

Lester walking into Richie’s office to burn the reel Richie put together from his old material is a good scene on its own. The man who lost »

‘The Venture Bros 6×06: It Happening One Night’ Review

8 March 2016 4:22 AM, PST

“We’ll know how cool we look.”

I think the Monarch just murdered Andy Warhol. Or Wes Warhammer, anyway. Who may or may not have been Andy Warhol. ‘It Happening One Night’ sadly repairs the hole in the floor of Venture Tower, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the season’s best entries so far. From Hank’s dorky-sweet date to the Monarch’s lunatic raid on the Doom Factory’s lair, there was plenty to recommend the episode. It even managed to whip up a little tension with a moment that looked like it was heading for a repeat on 24′s death when the Monarch, eager to do a slow-motion-jump-away-from-the-explosion deal, got his coat snagged during his heroic leap. Shying away from pulling that trigger is understandable, and the brick joke that lands at the episode’s end as a result is side-splitting.

Horse Racing Movies Based on True Events

8 March 2016 2:03 AM, PST

In 2003 Universal Pictures released Seabiscuit, an Oscar-nominated film about horse racing in Depression-era America. Based on a true story, the film had the feel good factor, and perhaps introduced many to the thrilling world of horse racing for the first time. Seabiscuit, the horse, was undersized and unfancied, yet thrilled America with wonderful victories in many races, with the film astutely capturing the atmosphere of the time. However, Seabiscuit was not the first – and perhaps not the best – movie about the sport of kings.

Champions (1984) stars John Hurt as Bob Champion the legendary English jockey who had great success in the 1970s and 1980s. The film portrays Champion’s battle against testicular cancer and how he overcame the disease to win the 1981 Grand National. John Hurt – as ever – is brilliant in the role as the star jockey, giving a nuanced performance that highlights what it takes to be at the »
