In an eight-season-long show with several recurring faces spending literal years between appearances, it’s not surprising that many Game of Thrones characters were recast throughout the series. Game of Thrones featured an incredible and ever-changing ensemble cast. With such a large variety of characters and storylines during times of wars and violence, it wasn’t uncommon for actors to sign onto the series and expect their characters to die fairly quickly. For example, Game of Thrones was largely promoted with the image of actor Sean Bean for season 1, and his character Ned Stark was surprisingly killed off after only 9 episodes. Quickly showing that nobody is safe in the series, very few characters survived from the first episode through Game of Thrones’ divisive finale, with four of the six Stark siblings and Tyrion Lannister being the key exceptions. However, that doesn't explain all the Game of Thrones recasts.
