Doctor Who: Bill, Pearl Mackie and Peter Capaldi

Mid-way through the F.A. Cup semi-final, a new Doctor Who companion was announced. A few thoughts...

So, all in all, I feel the second half was much more exciting than the first. Stones started to push forward from the back for Everton and Delofeu's introduction meant a better final ball into the box. Shame Lukaku was off form. Probably a fair result though, and it's intriguing to see what Man United will do now that van Gaal has started to inject a bit of excitement back into the team.

In Doctor Who terms, I feel like the new companion, who Twitter has christened 'asBill', is an interesting prospect on a number of levels. From the little we've seen of her, in many ways Bill falls in with the general pattern of young female companion from the present day, quick of wit and inevitably feisty. You could »

Want to buy such hit games as Assassin's Creed Syndicate ? You'll need to shell out for Amazon Prime, we've learned...

For a subscription amounting to £79 per year for UK users, Amazon Prime offers access to one-day deliveries, streaming video and other perks. As highlighted by Videogamer, however, Amazon is now attempting to coax customers into signing up for Prime by only making certain games available to subscribers.

These "Prime-Exclusive Items" reportedly include such games as Grand Theft Auto 5, Rainbow Six Siege and Far Cry Primal. Curiously, though, there doesn't appear to be any consistency over which games are locked up on which system - the Xbox One Far Cry Primal is an exclusive, yet the PS4 version isn't. GTA 5, Rainbow Six Siege and Far Cry Primal on the PS4 are exclusives, but the Xbox One versions are available to everyone.

The Legends Of Tomorrow enter Terminator territory this week, as The Pilgrim is sent to kill their younger selves...

This review contains spoilers

1.12 Last Refuge

Legends Of Tomorrow really makes the most of its time travel, doesn’t it? In season 1 of the show we’ve already visited the Old West, hung out with Marty McStein in the 1970s and seen a fair few scary dystopian futures. And now, Last Refuge has come up with another fun way to utilise temporal trickery...

The Time Masters have sent another assassin after The Waverider crew - The Pilgrim, played with cold callousness by guest star Faye Kingslee – and tasked her with stopping the Legends by killing their younger selves. ‘If you had a Tardis, how would you stop The Terminator?’ is essentially the question posed this week. Of course, Ray Palmer spotted this quickly and got in the spirit »

The Secret Warriors have their own little Civil War in this week’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., which ended with a hefty twist...

This review contains spoilers.

3.17 The Team

Ever since Skye’s real name was revealed to be Daisy Johnson, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans have been expecting her to bring the Secret Warriors super-team together as per the comics. The end of last season teased this in a particularly big way. And, after plenty of teases and allusions, the Secret Warriors are now a real, actual thing...

If it weren’t for Daisy breaking bad at the end of the episode, The Team would probably be remembered as ‘the one where the Secret Warriors finally went on a mission’. So let’s start with that: seeing this gang get together and use their powers to take down a Hydra base was a thrilling way to kick things off, »

Ruiner: first trailer for great-looking sci-fi shooter

It's a top-down shooter with a cool cyberpunk aesthetic. Check out the first trailer for Ruiner here...

Imagine the quick-and-dirty, top-down shooting of Hotline Miami fused with the cyberpunk lore of William Gibson and Katsuhiro Otomo. That's the best way to describe Ruiner, a PC game coming soon from Poland's Reikon and indie publisher Devolver Digital.

The first trailer below offers a first glimpse of the game in action, and it reminds us an awful lot of Bullfrog's spectacular 90s action strategy title, Syndicate - there's the same shadowy city which mechanically goes about its business until all the shooting starts. If you like what you see, Ruiner's website's also worth a visit - it takes you through the game's backstory and mechanics. The dash ability looks particularly impressive.

Ruiner's out this year for PC. When we have a more precise release date, we'll be sure to pass it along. »

HBO has ordered season 7 of its fantasy mega hit Game Of Thrones, but the remaining episode count is unknown...

Sound the ‘Not Particularly Surprising News That's Still Quite Exciting’ klaxon! HBO has renewed Game Of Thrones for season 7, before season 6 has even begun its televised run.

As per tradition, we’d expect Game Of Thrones season 7 to reach our screens in the month of April next year. There’s one thing we don’t know, though – how many episodes will make up the season this time around.

Seasons 1 through 6 have all had 10 episodes apiece, but word on the web is that the next two seasons of the show could have less. Speaking to Variety recently, co-showrunner David Benioff said “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season [the sixth one]”, and HBO executive Michael Lombardo mentioned that the showrunners are planning “probably two more years after »

Rod Daniel, the director of Teen Wolf and K-9, dies at the age of 73.

Here’s some (more) sad news that we missed earlier in the week: Rod Daniel, the director of Teen Wolf, has died, at the age of 73.

Daniel’s directorial career also covered films such as Like Father Like Son, K-9, Home Alone 4 and Beethoven’s 2nd. He notably was quite dismissive of his own work in a later interview he gave, telling reporter Christopher Borrelli that “I hold no illusions. I wouldn’t buy a ticket to any of my movies”.

“It's going to sound like a cop-out, but when I retired, I never once thought about it. Does that answer your question? I don't rank with the greats. I made these [expletive] movies because I could, and because they paid me a great deal of money. Which is not to say I »

Alfonso Cuaron has been brought in to "give notes" on Andy Serkis' upcoming Jungle Book movie...

With Disney and Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book riding high at the top of the box office charts worldwide, Warner Bros has opted to do some additional surgery on its own Jungle Book film, that’s due in 2018. The studio has already changed the name of the movie from Jungle Book: Origins to Jungle Book, and it pushed the movie back to October 2018, buying itself more time.

Now comes the news that Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron has been brought in to take a look at the project.

Andy Serkis is making his directorial debut with Jungle Book, and he shot the footage he needed for it last year. His cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett, with Callie Kloves penning the script.

A rebooted G.I. Joe will lead the upcoming Hasbro movie projects - and a lot of Marvel writers have been recruited to help.

When it was looking to expand and set-up a Transformers movie universe last year, Paramount Pictures hired Akiva Goldsman to bring together a writers’ room to come up with a whole bunch of new Transformers films. That they duly did, and Paramount – from 2017 – will be releasing a Transformers film a year.

Now, it wants to repeat the trick with other Hasbro properties.

It’s thus moving ahead with a Hasbro movie universe, to pull together the likes of a rebooted G.I. Joe, Micronauts, M.A.S.K. and Visionaries. Akiva Goldsman is again heading the writers’ room up, and here are the people he’s recruited.

Robert Downey Jr hints that Sherlock Holmes 3 might finally be happening...

It’s been five years since Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law came together for Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows. Since then, both actors have expressed that they’re keen to make a third Sherlock Holmes big screen adventure, and director Guy Ritchie is also on board with the idea. The problem has been scheduling, and just fitting the project in.

But there could now be progress.

Robert Downey Jr is currently doing the interview rounds for Captain America: Civil War, and he’s confirmed that a third Sherlock Holmes big screen adventure is edging closer. “We’re talking about it right now”, he told Shortlist. “I can’t wait. Line Of Duty series 3 episode 5 review

Line Of Duty series 3’s penultimate episode is a gripping hour of drama that doesn’t fail to shock. Major spoilers...

This review contains spoilers.

Jed Mercurio says he doesn’t write tragedy, but what else could you call tonight’s episode? It unfolded like a Greek play, from the opening commendation ceremony—a scene scarcely more ironic had Mark Antony popped in to present Cottan with the award for most ‘honourable man’—to the death of Lindsay Denton, a conflicted hero whose fatal flaw finally proved such.

Denton’s tragic error was taking a shortcut to what she perceived as justice. You could say her fate was sealed the moment she broke faith with the law to see Tommy Hunter punished. Everything that happened to her since the ambush resulted from that mistake and her subsequent denial. She was Oedipus. With a fringe.

James Bond: Ralph Fiennes on his future as M

Ralph Fiennes tells us that he’s signed for three James Bond movies, but he's not sure what the plan is for the next one.

There’s been a lot of questions about what will happen next for British superspy James Bond in the next installment after last year’s Spectre - especially on whether Daniel Craig might return as 007 since he’s been fairly vocal about not wanting to play the part a fifth time.

At the press day for Luca Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash, Den Of Geek Us asked actor Ralph Fiennes, who took over the role of Bond’s handler M from Dame Judi Dench, whether he might stay on as M once they change Bonds, similar to how Dench remained in that role between Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig

“I have no idea”, Fiennes said, unsurprisingly. “I’m poised to do another Bond if they want me, »

2016 can just stop now.

Reports are coming in that the singer, actor, performer and genius Prince has died. He was just 57 years old. According to TMZ, he was found in his recording studio in Minnesota earlier today.

The news has since been confirmed by Prince's publicist.

Where do you start? His music. His movies. The summer of the Batdance. Prince’s work saw him sell over 100 million records in his lifetime, and bring us the immortal Purple Rain.

Horrible news, this. We seem to be writing these words an awful lot this year.

Rest in peace, Prince. You leave a body of word that will live on for a very, very long time.

Guy Hamilton, best known for the his work on the James Bond movies, Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever, Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun, has died at the Hospital Juaneda Miramar in the city of Palma de Mallorca on the Spanish island of Mallorca. He was 93.

Hamilton raised the profile of the James Bond movies through his work with original film 007 actor Sean Connery and Roger Moore, who played the spy starting with Live and Let Die and in 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun, which Hamilton directed.

"Incredibly, incredibly saddened to hear the wonderful director Guy Hamilton has gone to the great cutting room in the sky. 2016 is horrid," Moore wrote on Twitter.

Does The Flash have a woman problem? On the basis of its latest episode, it would seem so...

This review contains spoilers.

Can we please talk about Caitlin Snow, and what a huge mess The Flash has made of her this season? It feels like a good time to do so, her being kidnapped again and all.

I'm starting to think that The Flash hates women and, with Arrow having gone through a similar problem since it premiered, that's really very sad. The show is so very good at so many things, but it's quite terrible at writing its female characters anything interesting, inoffensive or proactive to do. Caitlin is the most obvious victim of this, because I'd argue that Iris now is much improved from Iris a year ago.

No, Caitlin is continually shafted in Team Flash storylines, and her only function at this point seems »

Idris Elba shines and Richard Madden snarks in Paris-set terrorism-tinged action movie Bastille Day...

It’s about time that Idris Elba took centre stage in a big screen action film. And if there’s one thing that stands out during Bastille Day, it’s not the eerie real world parallels (the film, about a terrorist attack in Paris, was actually shot before the events of November 2015) or the brace of British actors speaking with American accents; it’s that Mr Elba is very good at taking centre stake in a big screen action film.

But the film doesn’t open with him. Instead, we’re flung straight into the centre of France’s capital while Richard Madden’s Michael sneaks through a throng of distracted Parisians and pickpockets the lot of them. Madden is playing against type as a sarcastic street criminal, but enough of his Prince »
