Kingsman The Secret Service review: Heaven is a place on Firth

18 hours ago | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Matthew Vaughn; Screenwriters: Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman; Starring:Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L Jackson, Michael Caine, Mark Strong, Mark Hamill, Samantha Womack; Running time: 128 mins; Certificate: 15

'Colin Firth vs Scum'. In an alternate reality, we'd like to think this movie was given that iconic title. Especially as its most joyous scene involves the former Mr Darcy tackling a pub full of rampaging thugs armed with just an umbrella – and without even one of his immaculately groomed hairs coming out of place or a single expletive emitting from lips that wouldn't scowl if you offered them a blank cheque. The Firth doesn't do disheveled or uncivilised, for as we learn from his character - 'manners maketh man'.

We also discover that the creative forces behind Kick-Ass maketh another belter that puts a dynamic twist on a well-worn genre. Boasting immense performances from Firth as an aristocratic agent and »

Samuel L Jackson: 'Jonathan Ross inspired Kingsman character's lisp'

25 January 2015 4:11 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Samuel L Jackson has revealed that his character's speech impediment in Kingsman: The Secret Service was partially inspired by Jonathan Ross.

The actor told The Guardian that he chose to give his villainous character - internet billionaire Valentine - a noticeable lisp due to his own personal experiences.

"I did the lisp because people tend to dismiss people who have defects," he said. "In interesting sorts of ways. And especially... speech defects.

"I stuttered when I was a kid. People laughed at me when I talked. Smart people."

He added that chat show host Ross, whose wife Jane Goldman co-wrote the screenplay for Kingsman, became a type of model for his character's lisp.

"I remember the first time I met Jonathan Ross on TV, and even I was distracted by his speech impediment," he said. "I spent more time dealing with that than talking to him.

"And it's something [Goldman and I] talked about a lot. »

Kingsman: The Secret Service Review

24 January 2015 11:57 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Matthew Vaughn

Cast: Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton

Certificate: 12A

Running Time: 129 minutes

Synopsis: A veteran secret agent takes a young upstart under his wing.

Mark Miller and Matthew Vaughn (the team who brought audiences the blood-stained joy of Kick-ass) are back with Kingsman: The Secret Service, a new take on the spy film that is riotous fun and full of surprises.

When a spot opens up, each of the Kingsman spies are asked to nominate a potential candidate to take on that position. While most nominate someone of a higher class, wealth and position in society, one nominates the son of a former colleague – after getting him out of jail that is. Eggsy is persuaded to try out but the fish-out-of-water dynamic certainly presents a few challenges and as his relationship with his mentor grows, his hidden potential starts to reveal itself.

First off, there is an incredible ensemble cast to consider. »

Second Opinion – Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)

Kingsman: The Secret Service, 2015.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn

Starring Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Sofia Boutella, Mark Strong, Sophie Cookson, Michael Caine and Mark Hamill.

Synopsis:

A veteran secret agent takes a young upstart under his wing.

The last time comic book writer Mark Millar and director Matthew Vaughn collaborated on an adaptation we got Kick-Ass, a madcap hyper-violent outrageously funny deconstruction of the superhero genre. It was lightning in a bottle, and thankfully that lightning hasn’t left as their next project, Kingsman: The Secret Service, is just as outlandish and entertaining. Imagine taking the over-the-top action sequences of Kick-Ass and mixing them with the narrative of a 60s reminiscent James Bond flick, cranked up to 50 on the absurdity scale. Sounds awesome on paper but the execution is even better.

Part of the reason why has to stem from Matthew Vaughn’s vision as a director, which »

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)

Directed by Matthew Vaughn

Starring Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Sofia Boutella, Sophie Cookson, Michael Caine, Mark Hamill, Tom Prior and Jack Davenport

Synopsis:

A veteran secret agent takes a young upstart under his wing.

Marking the second time Matthew Vaughn has directed a comic book created by Mark Millar, Kingsman: The Secret Service is a ridiculously fun movie with a wonderful sense of comic violence and a sweet heart. It’s a film that never takes itself too seriously, but treats its subject matter with respect to ensure the best cinematic experience. It may have some flaws, but there is so much to love about Kingsman: The Secret Service that they can be overlooked. Or shot at.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' Casts Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm!

22 January 2015 5:26 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The casting search for younger mutants in X-Men: Apocalypse is over, with director Bryan Singer announcing on his Twitter page that Sophie Turner will play Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan is starring as Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp will take on Storm. All three actors were mentioned as contenders for their respective roles in a report earlier this month. Saoirse Ronan was also up for Jean Grey, with Zendaya Coleman up for Storm and Taron Egerton and Jamie Blackley in contention for Cyclops. Oddly enough, Taron Egerton definitively stated yesterday that he was not playing Cyclops, and now we know why.

Producer Simon Kinberg confirmed in Septemeber that X-Men: Apocalypse will feature younger versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm, since the story is set in the 1980s. Very little is known about the story, except that it ends the trilogy that started with X-Men: First Class and continued with last year's X-Men: Days of Future Past. »

Colin Firth: 'I've never seen my wet shirt scene in Pride & Prejudice'

Colin Firth has opened up about his "prudish" behaviour that led to his famous Pride & Prejudice wet shirt moment.

The Oscar-winning actor told The Jonathan Ross Show that he was initially supposed to be naked in the scene which sees his character Mr Darcy dive into a lake on his estate.

Firth said: "I haven't seen [the series] since and I suppose I should see what all the fuss is about… The funny thing is the whole shirt thing has grown as the rest of it's been forgotten so I thought at the time it was well reviewed.

"People talked about the scene where I proposed to the girl and all the rest of it. And I thought that must mean I've done a good acting job and then there was some attention about the shirt and now it's just the shirt."

Taron Egerton Confirms That He Won’t Appear In X-Men: Apocalypse

Considering that X-Men: Apocalypse is well over a year away from release, talk of who will appear in the mutant sequel continues to rile up intrigue. A few weeks back, a shortlist of actors reportedly in the running for roles hit the web, sending the rumor mill into overdrive. That wishlist included Saoirse Ronan, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Jamie Blackley and Taron Egerton, who were all thought to be testing for pivotal parts in the franchise. Following an interview with MTV UK, we can now strike that last name from the list, as Egerton confirms he won’t be in the movie.

Out on the press circuit to promote his latest movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service, the actor was asked about the X-Men chatter and if he was a favourable candidate. Alas, it seems he won’t be appearing after all:

Watch as Kingsman: The Secret Service's Colin Firth turns a street kid into a spy

22 January 2015 1:18 PM, PST | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

A working class street kid becomes the new modern gentlemen spy courtesy of Colin Firth in Kingsman: The Secret Service.

This new behind-the-scenes look at the film gives us insight into the super-secret underground British society of spies, known as The Kingsmen.  Veteran secret agent Harry Hart (Firth) takes up the challenge of converting the young troublemaker Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton) to an elite and dapper secret agent under his tutelage.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class), Eggsy faces some pretty intense challenges as part of his training including the predicament of what exactly a Kingsman member is to do when one of their group finds himself plummeting through the air without a parachute.

There’s some tongue-in-cheek humour on display in this featurette.  After all, it’s not every day you hear a suave spy reference classic make-over movies of the 1980s and 1990s!

Matthew Vaughn suggests Guardians of the Galaxy deserves award recognition, clarifies recent Dark Knight Trilogy comments

22 January 2015 11:00 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In a recent interview for HeyUGuys Matthew Vaughn put forward the argument that superhero films are largely underappreciated in the world of cinematic award ceremonies, in particular Guardians of the Galaxy.

He suggests that the Marvel Studios film was a bigger challenge to create than a number of other films “where you just plonk a camera here and there and have a good actor”.

Vaughn also went on to comment on remarks he made about Christopher Nolan’s dark style of superhero film, which he says were taken out of context by the internet.

“What I said is Nolan is very good at doing what he did with Batman, and the subject matter of Batman deserved to be dark, but there are other superheroes, like I don’t think Superman should be dark. The clue’s in the costume, what it should be like…You have to always respect source material, »

Taron Egerton, who plays the lead role in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming "Kingsman: The Secret Service," was rumored to be one of around half a dozen potential candidates for the role of a young Cyclops in Bryan Singer's upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse".
