The first part of Jesus Of Nazareth highlights many important events in Jesus' life like the annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary;his birth at the manger, his getting lost at Jerusalem at age 12 years;his baptism by John The Baptist;the recruitment of his first apostles namely Simon Peter,James and John;the teachings and miracles that Jesus performed. It reached to the point wherein thousands of people in the mountain were fed by Jesus through the miracle of the multiplication of two fishes and five loaves of bread.
This definitely highlighted Olivia Hussey's performance as the Virgin Mary. Her virginal beauty as well as her portrayal of Jesus' mother were the highlights of the first part.I felt that she somehow overshadowed the great performance of Robert Powell as Jesus. From the meeting the Angel Gabriel at night, being at service with Elizabeth and coming into full understanding of who Jesus is all about and what his son's mission on earth particularly in the scene when she heard her son read the torah to the Pharisees and telling them,"Today, the scriptures are fulfilled". Despite the fact that the wedding of Cana wasn't presented in the TV series,at least it gave value to Jesus' mother which many Christian denominations don't really do much with the exception of the Catholics, who perceive Mary as an important figure in their faith.
