Liam Hemsworth Proudly Snaps Pictures of Chris as He Surfs up a Storm

7 hours ago | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Liam and Chris Hemsworth hit the beach in Australia on Tuesday! Liam stayed out of the water, snapping pics of Chris as he tackled huge waves with his surfboard. It's no surprise Liam is serving as an unofficial photographer, seeing as he's been nailing the Instagram game for almost a year now. Chris's relaxing day at the beach comes in the wake of a slew of exciting benchmarks in his career - he just wrapped his promotional tour for The Huntsman: Winter's War, which yielded plenty of sweet Pda with his wife, Elsa Pataky. Not to mention the fact that he's already killing us with his Ghostbusters role and helping Ellen DeGeneres up her surprise game. Liam, on the other hand, recently claimed he's "not engaged" to Miley Cyrus, despite the fact that the two were spotted at lunch and she's been wearing her engagement ring. Keep reading for more »

Can Disney's Jungle Book Win Week 3 at the Box Office?

9 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After dominating at the box office for two weeks in a row, Disney's The Jungle Book will go up against three newcomers in the final weekend of spring, before the summer movie season officially kicks off with the May 6 release of Captain America: Civil War. Standing in The Jungle Book's way of a three-peat is the Warner Bros. comedy Keanu, Focus Features' animated adventure Ratchet & Clank and Open Road Films' Mother's Day. While The Jungle Book most certainly won't win on May 6, going up against Captain America: Civil War, it should have no trouble taking the top spot for a third week in a row.

According to Box Office Mojo, both Ratchet & Clank and Mother's Day are expected to open in approximately 2,800 theaters, with Keanu expected to debut in more than 2,600 theaters. Keanu is already a hit with the critics, with a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Mother's »

Universal Takes Writedown On "Huntsman"

10 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Ouch. A new report in Variety indicates that Universal Pictures is set to take a bath of anywhere between $35-70 million on the failure of its big budget fairy tale feature "The Huntsman: Winter's War".

Universal does not provide a marketing and distribution budget for its films, but the film's production budget was $115 million - that's actually quite a bit cheaper than the $170 million the first film cost to make. Even so, the film opened to just $19.4 million at the U.S. box office last weekend, down 65% from the original.

It has grossed $98 million worldwide so far and is expected to close out at just over $200 million at the box-office, three-quarters of it from international markets. It's estimated that in order to break even theatrically, assuming Universal spent around $70 million in marketing costs, it would have to earn approximately $325 million at the box-office.

Pay-tv deals and home entertainment sales will mitigate some of the damage, »

‘The Huntsman’ Faces Steep Writedown After Chilly Box Office Results

26 April 2016 2:08 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The failure of The Huntsman: Winter’s War has ended Universal’s attempts to establish a new fairy tale franchise and could lose the studio as much as $70 million.

It’s difficult to accurately assess the amount of red ink the studio will be mopping up, given that Universal does not provide a marketing and distribution budget for its films, but several rival studio executives said they are confidant the film is a money-loser. Other sources projected that the film will be able to find some relief on home entertainment platforms, estimating it will lose between $30 million to $40 million over its life cycle.

Though the film is still in theaters, and has a handful of foreign locations left to open, such as Greece and Japan, these executives predicted that the film will ultimately bring in $55 million domestically and $150 million overseas, topping out at just over $200 million. Universal has to split those receipts with theater owners. »

Sony Scares Up 'Goosebumps' Sequel

26 April 2016 6:01 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

I'm not sure what alchemy goes on at studios in deciding when is a good time to make a sequel, but their formula doesn't always work. After "Snow White And The Huntsman" made nearly $400 million worldwide, Universal figured they could use that as the foundation for a prequel/sequel only to see "The Huntsman: Winter's War" flop pretty hard last weekend. And that brings us to "Goosebumps" which earned a respectable $156 million worldwide off a $58 million budget, hardly the figures you might think compel a sequel, but the suits at Sony think otherwise. The studio is gearing up "Goosebumps 2," enlisting Rob Letterman and Darren Lemke to return to direct and write, respectively. Apparently, "Goosebumps" has done well on home video which is also prompting the followup film, not to mention the R.L. Stine brand does seem to have some staying power. Not confirmed to return just yet is Jack Black, »

Mirror Mirror on the wall who is the fairest of them all?

Oh, Charlize you're gorg but those beasts in Jungle Book are fairest to moviegoers, who plucked down another $60 million to watch dem pixels. And all those other computer generated animals in Zootopia in their eighth weekend were also still going strong. Maybe you should have dissolved into birds more often? (With a budget north of $100 million, the opening of The Huntsman reminds Hollywood of a fairly obvious lesson: not every hit is meant to morph into a cash cow franchise by sequelizing it.)

"Disney proves once again that the jungle is where audiences around the world wanted to spend their time as 'The Jungle Book' dominates at the multiplex this weekend with a bear-sized $156.8 million and pushes this pre-summer season hit film to over the half billion mark through Sunday. Notably, Universal's 'The Huntsman: Winter's War' had its North American debut and in combination with the international cumulative box office to date of$80.2 million pushed its total to just over $100 million globally. »

5 Reasons 'The Huntsman: Winter's War' Bombed at the Box Office

24 April 2016 2:01 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

What were they thinking? That's the question you have to ask Universal and the makers of "The Huntsman: Winter's War."

As expected, the messy prequel-sequel to 2012's "Snow White and the Huntsman" failed to topple Disney's live-action "Jungle Book" from its box office throne. In fact, no one even expected an opening anywhere near the $56.2 million debut of the first "Huntsman." Nonetheless, it was at least tracking to open with a respectable $24 million or so. And yet it couldn't even muster a debut that big, settling instead for an estimated $20.1 million opening weekend, about what the first "Huntsman" earned in its first day.

What went wrong with Universal's $115 million wannabe hit? Here are five reasons it failed to measure up to its predecessor.

1. No Snow White

How do you tell a Snow White story without Snow White? Granted, the whole fairytale-backstory thing has worked elsewhere, as in "Maleficent" and on »

Weekend Box Office: The Jungle Book Remains King, The Huntsman Freezes Up

24 April 2016 1:02 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With no new significant competition at the box office this weekend, The Jungle Book held the number one spot for a second weekend in a row. Adding $60 million, a typical 40% drop from its opening weekend, Jungle Book just missed $200 million, landing at $191 million. Despite that strong showing, it has yet to prove it has the stamina of Disney's other major movie on the market, Zootopia. Zootopia, now in its 8th consecutive week in the top five, dropped less than 20% from last weekend. With $316 million it has set a bar that Jungle Book may struggle to meet. Prequel The Huntsman: Winter's War froze up solid over the weekend, tanking to the tune of just $20 million, well short Snow White and the Huntsman's $56 million opening in 2012. Foreign sales of $80 million helped bolster Winter's War against its $115 million production budget, but don't look for this limp performance to inspire Universal to pony »

The Jungle Book Wins Again at the Box Office with $60.8M

24 April 2016 1:01 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

With just a few weeks left until Marvel's Captain America: Civil War kicks off the summer movie season, Disney's The Jungle Book put up big numbers in its debut last week, raking in $103.2 million. This weekend, the Disney adventure only went up against one new movie in wide release, Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War, while a number of other movies like Pantelion's Compadres, Bleecker Street's Elvis & Nixon and Roadside Attractions' The Hologram For the King also debuted in limited release. None of these movies ended up standing a chance against The Jungle Book at the box office this weekend, which won again with an impressive $60.8 million.

The Jungle Book was being projected to drop a healthy 43% in its second frame in theaters, winning for the second week in a row with $59 million, but it ended up faring a bit better than those predictions. According to Box Office Mojo, The Jungle Book »

The Jungle Book remained in first place in its second weekend by a large margin over the weekend runner up as it tripled the opening weekend for Universal's The Huntsman: Winter's War. With an estimated $60.8 million, Disney's The Jungle Book dropped only 41.1%, the fourth smallest second weekend drop for a film that opened over $100 million as its domestic cume now climbs to over $191 million. Internationally the film took in an additional $96 million this weekend as its global take is now over $528 million, fifth largest for the year so far. In second place, Universal's prequel The Huntsman: Winter's War struggled out of the gate. Weekend Box Office: 'The Jungle Book' Rules Over 'The Huntsman'

24 April 2016 9:21 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

By Lindsey Bahr, AP Film Writer

Los Angeles (AP) -- "The Jungle Book" remains king of the box office in its second weekend in theaters, beating new opener "The Huntsman: Winter's War" by nearly $40 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

While "The Jungle Book" celebrates a $60.8 million weekend and a $191.5 million domestic total, "The Huntsman" sequel is flailing in second place.

Chris Hemsworth-starring movie took in only $20.1 million against a production budget of $115 million in its first days in theaters. The first film earned $56.2 million in its debut in 2012 and went on to gross $396.6 million worldwide.

"Barbershop: The Next Cut" landed in third place with $10.8 million in its second weekend in theaters. "Zootopia" and "The Boss" rounded out the top five with $6.6 million and $6.1 million, respectively. »

"Jungle Book" Buries "Huntsman" Prequel

24 April 2016 8:33 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Universal Pictures' big-budget fairy tale "The Huntsman: Winter's War" was a dud at the box-office this weekend as it opened to a mere $20.1 million - that's 64% lower than the domestic debut of its 2012 predecessor "Snow White and the Huntsman" with $56.2 million.

With a $115 million budgeted film and terrible reviews, it's going to have to hope to make its cash back overseas. Yet, after two weeks of global release, the film has managed only a further $80.2 million outside the U.S. so far. It also marks the latest non-Marvel costly film flop for Chris Hemsworth off the back of last year's "Blackhat" and "In the Heart of the Sea".

Disney's "The Jungle Book" stayed in first place, taking in a further $60.8 million over the weekend domestically and globally soaring past the $500 million mark. "Barbershop: The Next Cut" came in third with $10.8 million, followed by "Zootopia" with a further $6.6 million domestically »

The Jungle Book” remains dominant at the U.S. box office, heading for an estimated $62 million for its second weekend — more than triple the opening of fairy tale “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” at about $20 million.

Disney’s “The Jungle Book” pulled in $16.5 million at 4,028 locations on Friday, its eighth day of release, towering over the opening day of Universal’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” with $7.3 million at 3,791 sites.

Should the estimate hold, “The Jungle Book” will have posted the best second weekend of 2016, topping the $56.5 million second frame for “Deadpool,” and will wind up the weekend with about $192 millon after 10 days.

“The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” a prequel to 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” generated a B+ CinemaScore from audiences amid mostly negative reviews with 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Box Office: ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ Can’t Match ‘Jungle Book’

22 April 2016 1:28 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Huntsman: Winter's War” is having a bear of a time competing with reigning box office beast “Jungle Book,” which is looking at a healthy $56 million weekend as is continues to win the lion’s share of audience affection.

The fairy tale prequel to 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” should pull in $7 million to $8 million Friday, based on studio estimates, leading into an opening weekend total that could reach into the low $20 million range.

The new interpretation of the classic tale will be at best a pale reflection of “Jungle Book.” Disney’s reimagining of its 1967 animated classic, which opened last weekend, is expected to haul in $15 million Friday, to jump-start a $56 million weekend, according to estimates.

Jungle Book,” based on the Rudyard Kipling’s story and combining a live-action child with computer-generated animal characters, has won over audiences globally, bringing in a total of $377 million through Thursday night, »

Chris Hemsworth trades in the hammer for an axe once again in The Huntsman: Winter’s War. It’s both part-prequel, part-sequel, as the film follows Queen Ravenna and her turn to darkness as she desperately tries to stay the fairest in all the land. We also meet Ravenna’s sister Freya, played by Emily Blunt, who has the ability to manipulate ice, giving the film a very Frozen feel. Apparently this movie was a blast for the actors to make. They would bring their kids to set and Hemsworth admitted his would chase each other around with prop weapons during the shoot!
