Why Ethan Hawke Wanted To Join The Magnificent Seven Remake

50 minutes ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There were probably quite a few perks for Ethan Hawke signing on to the upcoming remake of The Magnificent Seven. The movie not only has an absolutely brilliant cast and an epic story, but it also has the potential to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2016. These a pluses that would draw the attention of any talented actor, but for Hawke the attraction to the project was two-fold: the chance to do a completely different kind of western, and an opportunity to reunite with his Training Day collaborators director Antoine Fuqua and co-star Denzel Washington. Ethan Hawke can currently be seen in limited theaters playing legendary jazz musician Chet Baker in the film Born To Be Blue, and it was after recently chatting with the actor about the new project that I took the opportunity to ask about his involvement in The Magnificent Seven. The Oscar-nominee explained that he »

Film Review: ‘Collective:Unconscious’

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Five independent filmmakers interpret each other’s dreams in “Collective:Unconscious,” an omnibus feature whose intriguing premise bears fruit in a diverting, diverse array of idiosyncratic miniatures. Shot in different formats and aspect ratios, the result offers enough tonal and aesthetic flavors that sheer variety elevates those sections that might seem too twee or obvious if viewed in a different context. Commercial prospects are iffy, but this serving of surreal cinematic appetizers is perfect fest fare, and will burnish the directors’ developing resumes.

After an introduction of framework sequences (dubbed “All Hypnosis Is Self-Hypnosis” in the end credits, and co-directed by Daniel Patrick Carbone and Lauren Wolkstein) in which hypnotist Daniel Ryan puts filmmaker subjects in a trance, the first segment is “Hide Your Smiling Faces” helmer Carbone’s “Black Soil, Green Grass,” drawn from Wolkstein’s dream. Shot in pristine black-and-white, it features Frank Mosley as a man recording the »

A Key Batman V Superman Collaborator Just Threw A Curveball Regarding Batman's Knightmare Scene

7 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

One of the more jarring sequences from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the infamous "Knightmare" sequence, where Batman tries to fight off a bunch of paramilitary goons, Darkseid and his Parademons, and of course the Man of Steel himself. Audiences have been lead to believe that this sequence is a dream, but a DC insider has come out saying that the horrific events we saw actually happened. Storyboard artist and director of several DC Animated films, Jay Oliva, has drawn on his experience in the DC Universe to deliver a new interpretation of the events Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice depicted during the time it took Bruce Wayne to decrypt a hard drive of LexCorp goodies. This theory comes from the Hall Of Justice podcast, via ScreenRant, which saw Oliva justify his viewpoint with the following logic:  What if what you saw was a Time Boom, a »

Film Review: ‘Gary Numan: Android in La La Land’

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The eponymous pioneering Brit synthpop star moves across the Atlantic and stages a comeback in “Gary Numan: Android in La La Land.” This portrait doesn’t provide much of a career overview, let alone fill in the blanks for those who wonder just what he’s been up to in the 30 years or more since he was last significantly in the public spotlight. But if Steve Read and Rob Alexander’s documentary feature sometimes seems too transparently a glorified promo for a recent album/tour, its subject is winningly candid and guilelessly charming — a far cry from his cold, “android”-like original persona, which was at least partly taken up as a cover for his Asperger-related performing anxiety. The polished pic will primarily access fans old and new via home-format sales.

Observance review – low-budget horror that manages to stand its ground

8 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Made on a measly $11,000, Joseph Sims-Dennett’s twitchy psychological thriller is poised on a knife edge between excellence and a cabin-fever B movie

For 11 days in January 2013, director Joseph Sims-Dennett holed up in an apartment in Rozelle, Sydney and spent $11,000 making his second feature film – roughly the same cost as the duck canapés and gougères served at a Hollywood premiere. Two years later he emerges with Observance: a twitchy, icky, genuinely unsettling psychological thriller about a private investigator who takes on what appears to be a simple, well-paying job.

From a derelict apartment across the street, all Parker (Lindsay Farris) is employed to do is spy on a woman and report daily updates over the phone to his employer (voiced by Brendan Cowell). Things aren’t as they seem, as these things often go, and Parker – traumatised by the recent death of his young son – spirals into confusion, delusion and possibly madness. »
