It’s been almost a decade since Denzel Washington has directed a feature film, which is a bit of a shame, since his two directorial efforts, Antwone Fischer and The Great Debaters, showed he’s capable of far more than acting. After starring in August Wilson‘s Fences on Broadway, the actor has decided to return to the director’s chair and bring Wilson’s story to the big screen.

First Order origins

By now you’re probably well aware that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was even more star-studded than it appeared at first glance. That was Simon Pegg lurking inside that Unkar Plutt costume, and Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz helping to voice BB-8, and Daniel Craig and Nigel Godrich and Michael Giacchino as some of those stormtroopers, and so on and so forth. That’s just the kind of property Star Wars is: one so beloved, even big stars are willing to work as faceless extras in it.

But even the power of the Force has its limits. And it reportedly met its match in one A-list comedian who was offered the chance to appear in a cameo role — and turned it down. Find out who and why after the jump.  Read More »

Ferris Fest

Back in February, we learned that Chicago would play host to Ferris Fest, a special 30th anniversary celebration of John Hughes‘ classic comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. There’s a whole slew of events, including a screening of the movie and a tour of filming locations in and around Chicago, planned for the event. Now the first promo has brought Ferris Bueller’s parents, played by Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward, into the mix to help promote the event from a very familiar house.

Watch the Ferris Fest promo after the jump. Read More »

ben hur remake

The chariot race sequence in William Wyler‘s Ben-Hur took a year to plan. The massive sequence, which was shot in five weeks, involved 7,000 extras and a set that cost $1 million to build. All that hard work paid off, because that sequence remains just as thrilling today as it probably was back in 1959.

It’s inevitable the new adaptation of Ben-Hur will face comparisons to Wyler’s film, especially in regards to how the new chariot race holds up to the 1959 film’s classic set piece. Below, director Timur Bekmambetov tells us about the planning and work that went into shooting the sequence.

star wars stage show

Star Wars characters haven’t been strangers in Disney theme parks for some time now. Even before the cooperation acquired Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, Darth Vader and Stormtroopers and other familiar faces were regular sights at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida as part of the Star Wars Weekends event. And if you go back before that, there’s Star Tours, the ever-popular motion simulator attraction.

But between Disney now owning Star Wars and the upcoming Star Wars land being constructed in the Hollywood Studios park, these characters have officially been upgraded from guest stars to main cast members. Heck, they now have their own live stage show and everything.

Speedy Gonzales Movie

Over the past few years, there have been a couple different big screen projects with ties to the Looney Tunes in development. At one time the iconic animated characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and more were going to get rebooted in an animated Looney Tunes feature. A couple years later, some kind of spin-off was in the works called Acme with Steve Carell attached. But we haven’t heard anything about those projects since they were announced.

Now it looks like Warner Bros. has turned their attention back to bringing individual characters to the big screen. They’re going to start with Speedy Gonzalez, the fastest mouse in all of Mexico, and they’ve already got someone lined up to voice the little rodent. ¡Ándale! ¡Ándale! ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba! ¡Epa! ¡Epa!
