If it’s a Friday late in the year, it must be time for an update to my predictions. Of course, it’s not just any Friday today though, it’s the release date for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I’m saving a more in depth look at the film until Monday (with probably another piece or two to come next week as well), once more folks have gotten a chance to see it, but today I’m mentioning it alongside my Oscar predictions. Why? Well, basically people seem to be raving and as it starts its history making run at the box office, awards chatter is going to be begin, so I wanted to address that Asap. This isn’t the last I’ll speak of the two together, but that’s just the thrust of today’s piece, alongside the usual update that I bring you…

Social buzz charts feel the Force.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has smashed the weekly UK buzz chart by generating more than 70,000 comments across social media, news, forums and blogs, according to analysis firm Way To Blue.
The latest instalment in the blockbuster fantasy franchise has taken the biggest box office in a single day in the UK and looks set to continue raking in the cash, with more than 13% of those mentions expressing ‘intent-to-view’, meaning they would look to convert those comments into cinema tickets.
After a week on release, Us comedy Sisters managed to generate close to 1,250 mentions while drama By The Sea, written, directed and starring Angelina Jolie, could only secure just over 325 comments (just seven of which expressed ItV).
Of the films set for release, Ron Howard’s maritime adventure In The Heart Of The Sea drew close to 1,400 comments; animation The Peanuts Movie racked up just over 1,100; and Will Ferrell-[link

Film Review: 'In the Heart of the Sea'

★★★☆☆ Yarns don't get much more ripping than the story of Moby-Dick - a fictional tale inspired by the real-life exploits of an early 19th century whaling ship which purportedly came off worst when it went up against a colossal, blubber-lined adversary in the form of a bull sperm whale. It's this gargantuan clash which has captured the imagination of Ron Howard, who brings to the screen an adaptation of Nathaniel Philbrick's 2000 book of that infamous nautical clash, In the Heart of the Sea (2015).

Ron Howard engagingly reworks the story that inspired Moby-Dick, with Chris Hemsworth and Cillian Murphy among a band of shipwrecked sailors
They’re going to need a bigger boat – or a smaller obsession. Ron Howard’s new movie is an entertaining maritime yarn from the 19th century, all about a doomed voyage: like Apollo 13 only with more scurvy and beards. Howard is a director who believes in strong, primary-colour storytelling, with plenty of uncomplicated emotion. Yet this story is oddly more subtle than you might think, giving an unexpected oblique sidelight into the psychological origin of American literature’s greatest mythic monster. It re-imagines the true story that partly inspired Herman Melville’s great novel Moby-Dick, though English teachers the world over will be pained to see this film do without the hyphen. A Massachusetts whaling ship, The Essex, sank in 1820 leaving a handful of crew adrift on open

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for

Yesterday afternoon, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made another category announcement. This time, it was the shortlist for the Best Makeup & Hairstyling category. The large field has been reduced to just seven contenders, with three set to be nominated for Oscars (this is the rare category that doesn’t have five nominees, hence the smaller than usual short list finalists). I wanted to take a quick look at the films left in contention for this Academy Award, show you a bit of history with the category, and try to figure out just what might happen here. So, let’s do it…
First up, here is the recent history of the Best Makeup & Hairstyling field, at least in terms of winners:
2014 – The Grand Budapest Hotel
2013 – Dallas Buyers Club
2012 – Les Misérables
2011 – The Iron Lady
2010 – The Wolfman
2009 – Star Trek
2008 – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
2007 – La Vie en Rose
2006 – Pan

The action in this year’s crop of awards contenders takes place on stages of all sizes, spanning the spectrum from the vast to the claustrophobic.
On one hand, a number of films deal with giant spaces and big vistas. “The Martian” occupies the surface of Mars and the enormous expanse between Earth and the red planet. “The Revenant” progresses relentlessly through an endless, uncharted wilderness. High-altitude mountains and wide panoramas form the environment for “Everest.” And the crazy vehicles of “Mad Max: Fury Road” roll across a desert without borders in a dystopian future.
On the flip side, the basis for “Room” is a tiny 100-sq.-ft. space — a micro-universe in which a mother raises a child, cut off from the outside world. Much of “The Hateful Eight” unfolds inside a confining stagecoach stop where eight strangers seek shelter from a blizzard.
“Brooklyn,” while it alternates between Ireland and the U.

It took many months for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to agree on the new actor who would play Spider-Man in the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe. What may surprise you, however, is that when they actually did make their choice, they told the world before the ever told the performer. Or at least that's the story that's being told by actor Tom Holland, who learned from the internet that he was to becoming the latest live-action version of the web-slinger.
The actor, who can currently be seen in theaters starring in Ron Howard's In The Heart of the Sea, was recently a guest on Sway's radio show, and it was while talking about his role as Spider-Man that he revealed the moment he learned that he got the part. Thinking back to that particularly special day in late June, Holland recalled,

The box office has been dominated by Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 over the past four weekends, with newcomers like Krampus and last weekend's In the Heart of the Sea failing to take down this franchise finale. This weekend, there are three new movies hitting theaters, but all eyes will be on just one, Disney's highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is expected to break box office records. Universal's Sisters and 20th Century Fox's Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip are sharing their debut with this behemoth, but according to the box office projections from Pro.BoxOffice.com, they naturally won't come close to this new Star Wars adventure.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which held its world premiere in Hollywood last night, is projected to take in a whopping $223 million in its first weekend. If this projection is accurate, it will be more than enough

Disney juggernaut set to play in a host of UK independent cinemas but some venues are resisting.
As UK independent cinemas increasingly bite on blockbusters and studio-level films, the majority of London’s independent cinemas will be screening Star Wars: The Force Awakens from Thursday, December 17.
A fleet of London independents, including most of the capital’s Picturehouse and Curzon venues, are due to show the film, helping to boost the site count beyond an expected 600+ venues.
For some, however, it wasn’t an easy decision.
Kate McCarthy, head of business operations at single screen indie stalwart The Phoenix, told Screen:
“The decision was taken to show Star Wars after quite a bit of discussion with our trustees, because obviously it’s not the regular choice for us.”
“We felt we wouldn’t do Star Wars and Spectre because it makes the ‘independent cinema’ tag slightly less true…but we hope it will enable us to show
