Razor thin DOF. Why, just why ?

Absolutely do not get this.
We now have lenses that will only focus on part of an eyeball
in a head and shoulders shot. Whoopee !

Meanwhile the OOF face is so soft,
it could be Donald Trump in there,for all we know.
The latest 85mm wonder is by definition a "portrait" lens.
So which customer is going to pay for 90%
of their make up or garment product to be rendered blurry ?

Weddings ? If the groom's mum is so average, Vaseline has already been invented
and it's a good deal more cost effective too.
$1800 bucks U.S. for an effect easily done in software ? C'mon.

I would have thought 30-50mm of DOF would have been the giddy limit,
but no, 3mm is the new black.
What bit am I not getting ?
