Possible, because Olympus is now partly controlled by Sony (which may yet swallow it, as it has so many others), and Sony is using its huge resources to go head-to-head with Canon and also arch-rival Panasonic, the other big Japanese conglomerates with substantial sensor-manufacturing capacity. Also possible because Sony may seek to exploit the Olympus brand and its user base for yet another novel format/type foray, as it has a notorious record of doing in audio as well as imaging.

Very interesting article here in Wikipedia; here is just one sentence:

"The company [Olympus] is owned 17% by two large camera makers, Sony and Mitsubishi (makers of Nikon)."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_Corporation

The sentence you quoted is outdated information.

In fact, the same article provides more current, but nevertheless also outdated, information in the box on the right hand side where it shows the four companies with the largest stake in Olympus: Nippon Life Insurance 9%, Sony 5%, Mitsubishi 5%, and JP Morgan 5%.

According to the Olympus investor information, the largest owners as of Sept 2015 were:

The Master Trust Bank of Japan: 5.28%

Sony: 5.04%

State Street Bank and Trust Company: 4.35%

Nippon Life Insurance Company: 3.88%

The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd.: 3.88%

JP Morgan Chase, which bought a 5% interest from Sony last April, had reduced ownership to 1.74%

But probably not good news for those of us using Olympus and already suffering considerable losses in value of our FT equipment, and even the rather too diverse offering earlier mFT models.

Thanks to both, for the needed corrections. I think it is significant to remember that Nikon is in there, too.
