There is a major difference between displays and sensors regarding the cost. Display manufacturing process is mainly tied to electronics and tooling and as we know they march on steadily, size and pixel count goes up and relative cost goes down.

Image sensors, however, still rely on silicon wafers. Pure wafers are expensive and the cost of a sensor does not scale linearly (2x sensor size -> 4x cost). Additionally, yield does not scale linearly either, because the bigger the sensor is the bigger chance there is to have a defect in it. Therefore, as long as there are no major shifts in the technology, the big sensors are going to be significantly more expensive.

Good points and I like the condition of "no major shifts in the technology...."
