About me:

I began shooting with an old Brownie Box as a kid in the early 70s, moved quickly through 126 and 110 formats to 35mm with an OM-2 for my high school darkroom club, followed by an OM-10, OM-1 and OM-4T. I bought my wife a Stylus Epic when our daughter was born, which produce lots of great photos, and then moved her into digital with a D560Z P&S in 2004, and since then a variety of Canon, Sony and Olympus P&S models. I followed in 2009 with my first DSLR, the Olympus E-410. In 2014, I moved to micro four thirds with the E-M5.

I enjoy nature, macro and portrait photography.

  • Some of the 3rd party batteries will not charge fully on the OEM Olympus charger, which is the case for the two sets of 3rd party batteries I have for my E-M5. I charge them instead on a 3rd party ...
  • Replied in Pixel peeping
Just tested two 65" and 75" 4k displays in my office today before deploying. The text scaling issues with 28" 4k go away but you may need a bigger office... :)
  • Replied in Google Drive
The Google Drive sync app can be buggy and crash prone, and a bit tricky if you use it on multiple computers and accounts, but otherwise Drive storage itself is pretty solid. If you have an ...
  • I wouldn't swing it by the lens, but if the lens weighs more than the body by a good margin then it's probably safe to cradle the lens around the mount and let it carry the body. That said, even ...
  • For times when MF is often used, like closeups and static subjects, the control of a legacy lens is nice to have, and the rendering is often difficult or impossible/expensive to replicate with a ...
  • Here is a test I did a few years ago, which includes the kit lenses and an OM Zuiko 50/1.8 http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53141632
  • Thanks, the size and weight of the lens makes it quite nice for freelensing. The entire lens unit moves inside the barrel for focussing, so I suspect it is a very simple 4 or 5 element design. I ...
  • I found a bit of time tonight to choose a few shots taken in the garden with my new $25 Petri 55/1.8, and am quite pleased with the results so far. Several of these were shot with the lens loose ...

  • Yes, those two are among the best. My 24/2.8 drowned in a boating incident and never got replaced, but I eventually got a 21/3.5 that I loved even more! I still have the 35/2.8 for its size and ...
  • I think this generalization comes from the fact that most legacy lenses are softer wide open than good native lenses wide open, and they often suffer from flare and coma, further adding to the ...
  • My E-M5 seems fine - no sign of movement at all. But I will probably not trust the lugs or the factory strap with the Vivitar S1 70-210/3.5 I just got it, it's a beast. (just a beater lens for ...
  • Just got home from a weekend away and my M42 adapter was in the mailbox, so I tried out the Petri 55/1.8 in the garden. Seems fairly sharp wide open, and contrast improves at f/2.8. Build quality ...
  • Thanks for the correction; clearly I am not familiar with these types of scenes in China. Travel is something I wish I had more time for, but it will probably have to wait for retirement.
  • (I'm typing this on a 4 year old Dell consumer desktop that has been flawless, and my oldest Dell consumer desktop was still running as a firewall until last week when I got tired of wasting the ...
  • Agreed on the mechanical points - comparing a 60s or 70s SLR to a current OM-D is like comparing an early 1900s upright piano to a current electric keyboard. Our 105 year old Heintzman has a ton ...
  • While I tend to agree, I also believe there is a case to be made for asking in order to get a shot that you could not otherwise get. For instance, the homeless man in the centre of the frame, who ...
  • I just tried this with a shot from my 12-40, and I don't see any change when the Enable Profile Correction is checked, until I choose a profile manually. This suggests that building a lens profile ...
  • This implies then that if you Enable Profile Corrections, and no profile is found, that no correction is performed. Can you detect a difference between these two settings? If so, then this is a ...
  • Thanks for the samples and feedback. My Petri 55/1.8 just arrived, so I'll be occupied with that for a while... :)
