Black and White in Nature

Challenge #3 in the Different series. Hosted by Rastoff.

Challenge has finished

Black is the absence of all color. White is a mixture of all color. Neither truly exists in nature. Take a picture of black or white or both as it occurs in nature. Try to get as much contrast as you can. Understand, this is an exercise in understanding. I will be the final judge on what is black or white for this challenge.

I thought the rules for this were simple. Sure, the object is difficult, but that's why it's a challenge.

In the future I will work harder to make the rules more clear.

Well, the disqualified photo is full color, with perfectly adjusted white balance. Pump up the saturation and see it for yourself.

Well, I have to eat a little crow here. I posted a sample photo without looking at it closely first. I posted a picture of the moon that had indeed been processed into black and white which is not the intent here. It was a genuine mistake and I intended to post a different picture.

I can see where that would cause some confusion. I have removed the wrong picture and replaced it with the correct one. Sorry for the mistake.

Sorry for the confusion. Looking for pictures that have black and/or white in them, but naturally occurring. This is why I posted a picture of the moon as an example. The space is black, but the moon itself reflects what appears to be white.

Since neither black nor white truly exist in nature, find subjects that are as close as you can get. There are already some really good pics submitted. Follow their example.

Correct. Trying to post process a picture into black and white is not the goal. The goal is to find subjects that get as close as possible to white or black or both.

Please clarify what you mean by: "Take a picture of black or white or both as it occurs in nature." Since you state neither (black nor white) truly exists in nature, this is a bit confusing. Do you mean to take a picture of something that exists "naturally" in black and white. That is . . . the image would appear black and/or white without special processing to remove colors (e.g., like a colored picture of a zebra). What are you really wanting?

The zebra is a good example. It's stripes are not truly black or white, but we categorize them as such. So, a zebra is a good subject for this challenge.

Post processing in color is not the idea. The idea is to find things or subjects that come as close as possible to black or white as it occurs naturally.
