Publisher's Summary

Flora Dane is a victim.

Seven years ago, carefree college student Flora was kidnapped while on spring break. For 472 days, Flora learned just how much one person can endure.

Flora Dane is a survivor.

Miraculously alive after her ordeal, Flora has spent the past five years reacquainting herself with the rhythms of normal life, working with her FBI victim advocate, Samuel Keynes. She has a mother who's never stopped loving her, a brother who is scared of the person she's become, and a bedroom wall covered with photos of other girls who've never made it home.

Flora Dane is reckless.

...or is she? When Boston detective D. D. Warren is called to the scene of a crime - a dead man and the bound, naked woman who killed him - she learns that Flora has tangled with three other suspects since her return to society. Is Flora a victim or a vigilante? And with her firsthand knowledge of criminal behavior, could she hold the key to rescuing a missing college student whose abduction has rocked Boston? When Flora herself disappears, D. D. realizes a far more sinister predator is out there. One who's determined that this time, Flora Dane will never escape. And now it is all up to D. D. Warren to find her.

What the Critics Say

"As Flora, [narrator Kirsten] Potter transitions from the fragile tones of a survivor to her fearful, desperate thoughts while being held by her captor. Portraying Warren, Potter projects confidence and excitement as the detective uses her intuition to get to the bottom of the case. Each snappy remark adds power and validity to this strong character while engaging the listener." (AudioFile)

    "Dark and Fascinating"

This is the story of Flora Dane. Lost and found and lost again. It's a story of monsters and survival. So horrifying and gut-wrenching that I dare not listen close to bedtime because I was afraid of the nightmares.

Several times I thought I would just quit. I couldn't stand anymore. But then I'd start again because I NEEDED to know what happened to Flora.

Lisa Gardner is an excellent writer. One of the best I've ever read. The book is well-worth 5 stars. Glad I finished it. Never want to read it again....but if Gardner writes more about Flora, I'd be first in line to get the book.

What about Kirsten Potter’s performance did you like?

Kirsten Potter as D D Warren? Could anyone else compare?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes, and I did.

    Any additional comments?

Wow! This book is unbelievable (in a good way)! I cringed when Flora described the time she spent locked in the pine box, I mean I could feel my anxiety level and !heart rate! increasing and really thinking about "what would I do in that situation?). When an author can do that to you, you know she's good. The book OUTSTANDING! I started listening and from the very first sentence I was on the edge of my seat. When the protagonist (Flora) describes her life with her captor and the things she participated in to stay alive while costing other women theirs or her complete submission to his every dark perversion and her acceptance to what she believes to be the rest of her life. Having an opportunity to escape and letting it pass because she no longer believes she's worth it - heartbreaking. I think for me the really heartbreaking part is knowing that this story is a compilation of headline stories from the past few years. This book is extremely thought provoking, disturbing and knowing that it is a work of fiction - thrilling!
    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

    "Wow, so damn good."

One of the best suspense thriller books I've listened to. I was on my seat from start to finish. There wasn't one moment I got bored with the story line or characters. Nothing predictable about it.

It was hard to stop listening to this book! I loved the way the story centred around the victim and her efforts to help other victims. The detectives had their own background stories going on and it was all interesting and believable. A few unexpected twists just made it more delicious.

    "Amazing story!"

I loved this book, it was one of the best I've ever listened to! I listen to audio books on my hour long drive to and from work, this book however I could not put down. I listened even when I worked. I loved every moment. It kept me entertained and wondering what was going to happen until the very end. Normally books like this are predicable, this one was far from it! While I wanted to know everything I was honestly so sad when it ended.

This is the first time I've even heard of Lisa Gardner and I now plan on reading and listening to more of her books! It's been a long time since a book has kept me this enthralled. I'm going to recommend this book to everyone!

    "Another winner!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been a fan of Lisa Gardner since I read her first book. She has done an excellent job creating D.D. Warren and a believable supporting cast. I always look forward to her books. Kirsten Potter is the voice of D.D. I highly recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys mysteries/thrillers. You won't be disappointed!

    "Disliked the narrator."

Based on other reviews, I must be the only one who didn't like the narrator. I almost stopped listening after the first two hours based on the narration. I found Kirsten Potter's voice reminiscent of an angry college professor giving a lecture to a bunch students.

The storyline was good enough to keep me going however, and either I got used to the narrator's voice or she toned it down as the book went on.

As far as the story itself, I think it was good, though the repetition of some of the dialogue and descriptions wore on me a bit. I got the impression the author was trying to fill a word quota. The plot was good enough to keep me guessing on whether or not I had figured out who the killer was. Overall the story and characters were interesting enough to give a listen to another DD Warren stories.
