'Allegiant' Opens Short of $30M, 'Zootopia' Tops $200M and 'Bronze' Bombs

20 March 2016 9:18 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

It's another #1 finish for Disney's Zootopia as the animated hit crossed $200 million this weekend, topping all newcomers. Coming in second was The Divergent Series: Allegiant, with an opening that was down over 44% from its predecessor, and in third was Sony's latest faith-based feature, Miracles from Heaven, which over-performed the studio's conservative expectations. In all, the top twelve was down just a hair compared to the same weekend last year with a combined gross of $119 million, of which Zootopia accounted for nearly 32%. Dropping only 25.9%, Zootopia took in an estimated $38 million this weekend, bringing its overall cume to $201.8 million domestically, the third highest domestic total for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title (not adjusted for inflation). Additionally, it brought in another $64.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $591.7 million, which places it just behind the $591.8 million Tangled brought in globally over the course of its entire run back in 2010. In second, with an estimated $29 million, »

Taiwan-based film distributor and producer, Catchplay is launching a video-streaming service that it hopes will take on rival platforms in Asia and reverse piracy. Its Catchplay On Demand service launches initially in Taiwan, with Singapore and Indonesia set to follow in the second quarter of the year.

The company, which through a deal with New Regency, is one of the financiers of “The Revenant,” says the new service has a mix of content that has more new releases than rival platforms and delivers them quicker. It will be available in transactional video on demand and subscription VoD modes.

“In recent years, Catchplay has quietly and purposefully expanded its business from theatrical distribution to film financing and production, aggregating digital content for many leading digital platforms and the operation of our own movie channel,” said Harvey Chang, Catchplay chairman in a statement. “Today we launch our new digital platform that extends »

Film Review: ‘Thank You for Playing’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ryan and Amy Green designed their video game “That Dragon, Cancer” with a highly unusual purpose in mind: not to amuse or entertain, but rather to capture and demystify what it’s like to care for a terminally ill child. That experience is accessed on an even more intimate level in David Osit and Malika Zouhali-Worrall’s “Thank You for Playing,” a documentary that works as both an emotional portrait of a slow-motion family tragedy and a slippery inquiry into the therapeutic properties of making art. Raising, but not always answering, difficult questions about the advisability of coping with grief through the creative process, this alternately poignant and perplexing film is presently in limited theatrical release, and is set to air on PBS’ “Pov” series later this year.

One would have to play it to be sure, but based purely on the abundant footage we see here, “That Dragon, Cancer »

Why do we fund Australian films but not the cinemas to screen them in? | Lauren Carroll Harris

2 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

To support contemporary art we fund art galleries; in theatre we build new stages. Why isn’t the same approach taken with Australian independent cinema?

In the world of contemporary art, policymakers use our taxes to fund galleries and museums. In the world of theatre, we build new spaces and new stages. In the world of music, we fund broadcasters (imagine the Australian music scene without Triple J, or the network of small community stations whose mandate is to play local and emerging artists).

So why in the film world do we predominantly fund films but not the spaces to screen them in? Why isn’t Australia’s film policy angled more towards distribution, access and experience?

Another Key Cast Member May Be Coming Back For Mission: Impossible 6, Here's What We Know

4 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If it wasn't for the adrenaline filled thrill ride known as Mission: Impossible . Ghost Protocol, the television turned film franchise might have run out of gas long before Christopher McQuarrie got to put his personal touch on the equally impressive Mission: Impossible . Rogue Nation. Both of those films owe their success in part to the comedic and action adventure timing of Jeremy Renner, and it looks like McQuarrie is teasing the possible return of our man Brandt.  A Twitter exchange broke out between writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and his potential Mission: Impossible 6 star, Renner. Though, to be fair, Jeremy Renner started it; and McQuarrie definitely knew how to finish it.  Hey, is the band getting back together? Should I start stretching? @chrismcquarrie. 8 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Netflix is promising plenty of low-brow gags in the teaser trailer for “The Do-Over,” courtesy of Adam Sandler and David Spade.

The footage features plenty of gun play, car crashes, jumping off massive cliffs, young women in skimpy bikinis on the beach and repartee between the stars as Sandler and Spade decide to fake their own deaths.

“You sure about this, tough guy?” Sandler asks. “F— yeah,” a typically laid-back Spade replies.

The streaming service is releasing “The Do-Over” on May 27. Sandler and Spade starred in Netflix’s Western spoof “The Ridiculous 6” with Spade portraying General George Custer.

“Netflix got Ridiculous,” the trailer notes. “Now this Memorial Day, the madness continues.”

Besides “The Ridiculous Six,” Sandler and Spade also teamed on “Saturday Night Live” between 1992 and 1995 and on the “Grown-Ups” movies.

“The Do-Over” is directed by Steven Brill, who also helmed “Little Nicky” and “Mr. Deeds.” The ensemble cast also includes Paula Patton, »
