A 5-axis stabilization system and redesigned shutter should ensure shake-free images whatever the cause, and the new back-illuminated sensor is capable of capturing 4K video. The Sony a7R II is a huge step forwards for the a7 series, offering a series of class-leading features. Its 42MP BSI CMOS sensor is hugely impressive across a wide range of shooting situations. The 5-axis image stabilization helps make the most of both this high pixel count and the camera's excellent 4K video footage. The ergonomics aren't perhaps as polished as some of its peers and battery life is short, but these concerns are secondary to the camera's sheer capability.

Reasons to buy

  • State-of-the-art sensor: The a7R II's 42MP BSI CMOS sensor delivers phenomenal resolution and noise performance, dispelling the myth that you can only have one or the other. Dynamic range performance is formidable as well, allowing you to shoot stills and video of high contrast scenes with finesse.
  • Innovative autofocus: Perhaps most exciting is the Hybrid AF system which has 399 on-sensor phase detect points that offer over 60% horizontal and vertical coverage. Eye AF focuses on subject's eyes with unprecedented precision, even if they're moving. You'll be able to take advantage of the speed, face detection, and tracking abilities of the system on third party lenses as well, using the appropriate adapters.
  • Vibration-free: Sony has doubled-down on reducing shutter-induced vibration on the a7R II. The new shutter mechanism reduces vibration by 50%, and the electronic shutter eliminates it entirely - and allows for silent shooting.
  • 5-axis image stabilization: As with the a7 II, the a7R II offers sensor-shift image stabilization that corrects for translation, roll, yaw, and pitch movement.
  • 4K video: The Alpha 7R II captures 4K video in either full-frame or Super 35 format with a full suite of manual controls as well as headphone and mic jacks. Phase-detection makes for usable AF in video.

Things to consider

  • Short battery life: When shooting with the LCD you can take 340 shots per charge before running out of juice, which pales in comparison to what full-frame DSLRs can pull off.
  • Ergonomics: While the lightweight body and articulating screen offer much to like, the lack of haptic feedback from dials and buttons, or direct AF point selection, may feel frustrating to seasoned DSLR users.
  • No touchscreen display: Having a touch-enabled LCD would have made autofocus point selection easier and rack focusing more discreet when recording video.
  • Limited AF features with adapted lenses: Although the ability to focus third party lenses using phase detection is groundbreaking, many of the features that make the a7R II's AF system so compelling are unavailable with adapted lenses. Notably: Eye AF and Lock-on AF, as well as AF in video.

Sony is first out of the gates with a full-frame BSI CMOS sensor. By putting the circuitry behind the photo sensors, light capturing area goes up, which should decrease noise levels in low light. The camera's hybrid AF system puts 399 phase-detect points on the sensor, offering more coverage than in any competing full-frame camera.

Sony has totally redesigned the a7R II's shutter, which promises to reduce vibration (which was an issue on the a7R) by 50%. The addition of an electronic first curtain completely eliminates vibration while also allowing for silent shooting.

FINALLY a Good Digital Camera....from an Film Photographer

I mostly shoot black and white 120 film, and make my living selling big fine-art prints. I returned to film 5 years ago for aesthetic reasons, and tried all kinds of digital cameras and hated them all (5dmkiii, D800E, etc). The Sony A7Rii is the first digital camera I really like and can live with.

For the past year, I've also brought along a Sony A7R (with 16-35 and 24-70 zeiss lenses). It was a slow, clunky focusing camera with an amazing sensor. I liked the mirrorless concept, so I tolerated its faults. The mark ii version is a vast improvement; about 5 generations ahead of the old one. Sony has fixed just about everything about A7R, while adding some unique features.

I am the last person on earth to run out and buy the latest gear. I was lucky enough to walk into a local store who had one for me to try and buy. I was not happy about the price, but I could quickly see why it cost so much. The build quality and speed were terrific. You're definitely paying an early adopter fee for all the R&D.; It will be years before all this technology becomes cheaper, so go ahead and buy it now. At least this time Sony includes 2 batteries and a charger.

1) This is the first camera to shoot as unobtrusively as my rangefinder film cameras, except that I get a really nice preview. DSLRs were always old technology slapped onto modern technology. I hate DSLRs because you constantly need to 'chimp' and take your eyes away from the viewfinder to check exposure. With mirrorless, you can get a full what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview before hitting the trigger. No need to review for focus or exposure.

2) The new viewfinder more improved then you can initially tell. When turning a polarizer, for instance, I can see the change in sky much better.Read more ›

I am a changed man, buh-bye Canon...

Long time Canon user here. Pretty old school lover of the optical viewfinder and non-believer of mirrorless until this beast had surfaced.
My experience does not include the use of Sony/Zeiss since I only have Canon glass to use with my Metabones adapter but the AF on this combination has been fast and accurate so far with the Canon 24-70mm 2.8 Mark II.

Dynamic range is a huge improvement over the Canon systems, along with the AF system. This thing just doesn't know when to stop. The resolution is just ridiculous and is giving my Mac Pro 3.7ghz Quad Core, 32gb ram, 2gb AMD FirePro a run for performance. Luckily I upgraded my computer not too long ago because my old Mac Pro probably would have died.

Anyways without getting into a long review, I am a believer! I will be leaving Canon after 12 years, it's finally time to say goodbye...

Sony a7RII: the camera that set a new standard

Last night we received the Sony a7RII camera that we had preordered about a month ago. It’s a good thing that we jumped on an available deal so quickly, because apparently it’s now sold out in most places and backordered at most of the popular online camera retailers, including B&H;, Amazon, Adorama and BuyDig.

When we first saw the specifications on the a7RII, my husband and I were both extremely excited. Yes, it’s expensive, but it has just about every feature we wanted:

- 42 megapixels world’s first backside-illuminated full-frame sensor, with class-leading dynamic range, color depth and high ISO performance.
- 4k internal video recording with color profile at 30fps, with Super 35mm mode and clean HDMI output.
- SteadyShot 5-axis in-body stabilization.
- High ISO performance, ISO 25600 expandable to ISO 102400.
- Silent shutter mode and electronic front curtain shutter, rated up to 500,000 shutter actuations.
- 399 phase detect points and 25 contrast-detect points, rated to -2 EV sensitivity for low light autofocus performance.
- Continuous eye autofocus, which automatically detects and tracks an eye of a moving person.
- Bright electronic viewfinder, with 2,359,296 pixels, 0.78x magnification (largest for full-frame), and 100% coverage.
- Articulating LCD screen with 1,228,800 pixels that tilts both up and down.
- Minimum shutter speed for auto ISO, with options to change how the camera responds to changes in lighting.

Sweet MOTHER OF ZEUS!

WOW. Unbelievable. This camera is unbelievable.

I started with Nikons, and eventually found my way to the Sony A7II. Loved it, the in-camera stabilization, the amount of customizable controls, the great design, and obviously the image quality. That camera was about an 8/10, but I had two gripes, as minor as they may be:

1. I always wished the A7II had a little more resolution for cropping purposes, and this camera answers that. Unbelievable amount of size for cropping and getting the perfect shot.

2. I had also wished the A7II just had a somewhat quieter shutter. With the electronic first curtain they added to that camera, it wasn't THAT bad - no shutter shake, but the noise could be a little 'alarming' if you're doing street photography type things and want to be discreet. Well, this A7RII has a completely silent shutter, which is seriously amazing. You can still FEEL the shutter in a slight physical tactile way, but there is just zero sound.

Honestly, this camera is a 10/10 for photography. Maybe if you're a completely video guy, wait for the A7SII, though the 4k video on this is unbelievable as well, and has great light sensitivity given the obscene megapixel count. I LOVE the zeiss lenses available for the camera as well. Also, its important to realize that between the 399 phase detection points with lets say, the Metabones MarkIV adapter, you can perfectly use canon lenses as well, and autofocus them rather quickly.

All around the best camera I've used (though to be fair, it is the cutting edge right now) that isn't some $30,000 pro-grade type.

Also if you get this, highly recommend you check out the Zeiss BATIS line of lenses, they go really well with this.
