Emma Stone is attached to star in the Black List spec script “Letters From Rosemary.”

The script tells the story of Rose Marie “Rosemary” Kennedy, the first born daughter to Rose Fitzgerald and Joseph Kennedy, Sr., and the eldest sister of President John F. Kennedy and senators Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy. After displaying behavioral problems that caused her to fall behind accolades of her siblings due to a mental disability that was long kept secret, Joseph Kennedy arranged one of the first prefrontal lobotomies for her at age 23.

The procedure failed and left her permanently incapacitated. The spec, written by first timer Nick Yarborough, will take a look at broad look at the moments leading up to the procedure and how it affected the family going forward.

Steve Golin and Doug Wald of Anonymous Content, whose “Spotlight” just took the top prize at the Oscars, will produce the project. »

20 March 2016 9:18 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

It's another #1 finish for Disney's Zootopia as the animated hit crossed $200 million this weekend, topping all newcomers. Coming in second was The Divergent Series: Allegiant, with an opening that was down over 44% from its predecessor, and in third was Sony's latest faith-based feature, Miracles from Heaven, which over-performed the studio's conservative expectations. In all, the top twelve was down just a hair compared to the same weekend last year with a combined gross of $119 million, of which Zootopia accounted for nearly 32%. Dropping only 25.9%, Zootopia took in an estimated $38 million this weekend, bringing its overall cume to $201.8 million domestically, the third highest domestic total for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title (not adjusted for inflation). Additionally, it brought in another $64.8 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume to $591.7 million, which places it just behind the $591.8 million Tangled brought in globally over the course of its entire run back in 2010. In second, with an estimated $29 million, »

Taiwan’s Catchplay Launches Asian Movie Streaming Service

Taiwan-based film distributor and producer, Catchplay is launching a video-streaming service that it hopes will take on rival platforms in Asia and reverse piracy. Its Catchplay On Demand service launches initially in Taiwan, with Singapore and Indonesia set to follow in the second quarter of the year.

The company, which through a deal with New Regency, is one of the financiers of “The Revenant,” says the new service has a mix of content that has more new releases than rival platforms and delivers them quicker. It will be available in transactional video on demand and subscription VoD modes.

“In recent years, Catchplay has quietly and purposefully expanded its business from theatrical distribution to film financing and production, aggregating digital content for many leading digital platforms and the operation of our own movie channel,” said Harvey Chang, Catchplay chairman in a statement. “Today we launch our new digital platform that extends »

Film Review: ‘Thank You for Playing’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ryan and Amy Green designed their video game “That Dragon, Cancer” with a highly unusual purpose in mind: not to amuse or entertain, but rather to capture and demystify what it’s like to care for a terminally ill child. That experience is accessed on an even more intimate level in David Osit and Malika Zouhali-Worrall’s “Thank You for Playing,” a documentary that works as both an emotional portrait of a slow-motion family tragedy and a slippery inquiry into the therapeutic properties of making art. Raising, but not always answering, difficult questions about the advisability of coping with grief through the creative process, this alternately poignant and perplexing film is presently in limited theatrical release, and is set to air on PBS’ “Pov” series later this year.

One would have to play it to be sure, but based purely on the abundant footage we see here, “That Dragon, Cancer »

Three weeks to the night after Hollywood’s most stylish event —  the Oscars red carpet — Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Kate Hudson, Jeremy Scott and other fashion heavyweights huddled at the Sunset Tower in West Hollywood, California, Sunday for an intimate 200-person post-awards season, post-European fashion week season salute to designers, models and stylists making waves in the industry. Unlike the SXSW festival that just wrapped in Austin, Texas, nobody uttered the word “disrupter.” Which was ironic, since the stripped-down, principals-only gathering for “The Daily Front Row’s Fashion Los Angeles Awards” refreshingly deviated from other Sunday night trophy handout tropes. »

After Donald Trump declined to lend his marquee value to a planned Fox News Gop debate that was subsequently canceled, CNN cannily took advantage of the vacuum. They hastily scheduled their own event, billed as "The Final Five" (it's not too long ago that it could have been "The Hateful Eight"), featuring in-depth interviews with those still standing. To which it can only be said: Thank God the candidates are finally getting some media attention! ComScore Teams With Adobe In Media-Measurement Battle

4 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

ComScore may have moved another inch in its effort to dominate the media industry’s yardstick.

ComScore, which in recent months has become more aggressive in its bid to unseat Nielsen as the predominant arbiter of measuring audiences around media content,  said it will tap new metrics from software and analytics firm Adobe Systems. The effort is aimed at helping to measure consumption of video content across multiple screens, ranging from TVs to tablets.

“When people look at their audiences, they don’t have the entirety of the viewership,” said Manish Bhatia, chief product officer of ComScore, in an interview. “TV comes from one place. Ott comes from another,” he said, referring to so-called “over the top” content viewing that is done with streaming video and a broadband connection. “How many people are you reaching? It’s a basic question, but it becomes a very hard question for media companies to answer. »

'Get a Job': Film Review

There are some very fine films about emotionally and/or financially flailing college grads — think Reality Bites, The Last Days of Disco, Funny Ha Ha, Adventureland and Tiny Furniture. Get a Job, an unfortunate new comedy starring Miles Teller and Anna Kendrick, isn't one of them. To put things in starker context: The mediocre recent How to Be Single, in which Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson gal-palled around Manhattan, positively sparkles in comparison to this dimwitted and grindingly tedious chronicle of millennial angst. Get a Job was shot in 2012 and you can feel those four dust-collecting years

‘Better Call Saul’ Writer Breaks Down The Latest ‘Breaking Bad’ Connection

5 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Spoiler alert: The following interview includes plot details from “Better Call Saul” season 2, episode 6, titled “Bali Ha’i.”

Better Call Saul” is looking a lot like “Breaking Bad” lately. After Mark Margolis reprised his Emmy-nominated role of don Hector Salamanca last week, he continues the story in “Bali Ha’i” and brings his menacing twin nephews — better known as “The Cousins” — with him. Played by twins Daniel and Luis Moncada, the Cousins (a.k.a. Leonel and Marco Salamanca) were lethal enforcers in Season 3 of “Bad,” before meeting their dramatic demise at the hands of Hank Schrader. Now we get to see their origins in the “Saul” timeline (which is taking place about six or seven years prior to the start of “Breaking Bad”), as they threaten to make Mike’s (Jonathan Banks) life miserable, unless he gives in to Hector’s demands.

Review: On 'Better Call Saul,' Mike and Kim struggle with half-measures

(Other than his performance of the episode's title song, "Bali Ha'i" from South Pacific, he doesn't appear at all between when he pulls out of the nail salon parking lot and when Kim calls him to announce she has a fish on the line.) And, for the second week in a row, the stories involving Kim and Mike are so compelling that the show does just fine leaving its leading man to suffer off-screen mortification at the hands of Erin.
