Writer/director Christopher Downie wrote the role of Sergeant Svenning for himself, a character he intends to revisit over the course of his career. When Downie had to recast the character of Elis Heimermann, originally offered to Ernie O'Donnell, Downie felt that the right thing to do would be to offer O'Donnell his role in place of the one originally offered.
