Editors’ Notes

The creative path that Michelle Williams has taken since leaving Destiny’s Child has been winding but rewarding. While Broadway roles and touring theater dates have expanded her résumé, gospel has been the primary focus of her talents. Her fourth solo release, Journey to Freedom, returns her to sanctified realms with a batch of uplifting tunes that combine scripture-rooted lyrics with sparkling, inventive arrangements. Williams’ singing style avoids diva grandstanding in favor of a more natural approach, infusing her testimonies with gratitude and compassion. Producer Harmony Samuels adds African musical elements to the album’s mix of dance club grooves and old-school R&B melodies. “Need Your Help” and “Just Like You” delve into sleek electronica, while “Free” captures a vintage soul vibe and “Believe in Me” waltzes with a country air. “If We Had Your Eyes” (featuring American Idol winner Fantasia) and “Fall” (boasting guest appearances by Lecrae and Tye Tribbett) are very spiritually insightful. “Say Yes” is a track that reunites Williams with Destiny’s Child partners Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland in an exuberant celebration of faith.

NewGospel - Awesome!!!!

Awesome tracks really get me inspired. Some will not understand outside of their box that we serve an infinite God. So why would he restrict us to a certain sound. Modern Gospel has meaning and testimony... and just another way to give glory to the Kingdom of God. Awesome album. All glory to God!!!
