Flickr makes Auto-Uploadr tool a Pro-account exclusive

Flickr is an absolute mess. Its UI "overhaul" was a fiasco, but there it has sat, a festering pile of crap, for years now.

Then again, what do you expect from a site that was named FLICKr but didn't have video on it for most of its history?

Yahoo was a great company some years back.
Sadly, it became, and still is, a body without a head.
It lacks leadership
Their board has been selecting the wrong people as CEOs for quite a while.
Such non-qualified CEOs have been sending the company on a sharp down slide. All they know is: cut down on jobs and services to minimize their losses, rather than innovate and grow.
Take lessons from Google for crying out loud!

Yahoo needs to dump its current, and useless, board of directors, and to stop rewarding CEOs with $ millions for doing nothing but make the company less and less valuable.
Otherwise, they will be filing for bankruptcy rather soon (or acquired for cheap) if they continue along the current sliding path.

Finally, the most obnoxious feature made premium. Nice. There are so many cloudy apps wanting to suck in that crap I snap with a smartphone (because proper pictures are made with cameras), that one such thing less seems to be blessing.

People are not really interested in other peoples photos.

flickr is determined to commit hara-kiri. so be it. :-/

Any suggestion for a replacement to Flickr as a place to share images with the general public? I do like Flickr's proposition of community-based photo sharing, but their execution of the concept has been rather suspect for some time now.

I do not enjoy 500px as it is way too slanted towards the popularity contest aspect, and too often "the best Photoshopper" contest at that. DPR is too slanted toward gear talk, and few photo sharing opportunity apart from contests. Instagram is, well, Instagram. I generally want to brush up my photos carefully before sharing with the entire world, and Instagram runs exactly counter to that philosophy.

I have it, have had Pro before, and don't know any actual Pros that use it. The uploader is annoying as it is trying to suck up any card or device it sees...not my style.

Poor Flickr, desperately trying to make it's premium account more tempting.. The irony is, the Auto-Upload tool was useless what it was free. No options to sort, tag pictures or create albums. It's just a glorified "upload all" button. Lightroom with Flickr plugin was and still is a much better solution. Or simply using the normal Flickr upload.
And also... who pays for Flickr? Seriously?
It's a closed ecosystem, and like 500px, basically a popularity contest where the winner gets nothing. But to each his own, I guess..

Yeah, people who pollute Flickr with all their pics should pay. It's the polluter pays principle.

I've been paying $25. for years for a "Pro" account there. Not a pleasant surprise to find that it now will cost $50. And this Auto-uploader is something I never use. Too bad that anyone uses it. The pages of photos, when you want to look at a certain model's results, are often clogged with thousands of photos from single subscribers, who post every exposure they take. One such guy boasted that his camera was so good, that every shot he took was a keeper. He often takes and posts dozens of shots of exactly the same thing. I never saw even one from him that I would have put there, if I'd taken it.

I also may take dozens of shots of the same subject and maybe one or two or sometimes none, will get posted there. It's better to be your own toughest critic, than to wait for someone else to do it. If you do take excellent photos, but post all the others with them, they will mostly be lost in the jumble, to anyone viewing them. This is the downside of digital photography.

I mistakenly let that auto uploader take over and it uploaded thousand of template and system images. It's a pain to have to delete them and now my private photostream is clogged with lots of pics of patterns, blue skies, textures and such. I'd pay a little to get Flickr to autodelete them.

what else can u expect from a company now owned by Yahoo.....one thing leads to another and as much as yahoo sucks....they are passing on that image to flickr as well...

Quit my Flickr account after their 'redesign' several years back. Never regretted it. Flickr sucks.

Good! Never liked the Auto-Uploadr.

Especially when it came as "on" by default, and my entire phone ended up online.

I'm a "free" user and have found the Auto-Uploadr tool very useful. I've configured it so that it links to only one directory on my computer, and it is that directory in which I save jpeg exports from Photoshop that I think I want to display publicly. Later (and it usually needs to be later because uploading to Flickr is very slow) I can go to my private directory on Flickr and make a final decision on which of the those uploaded jpegs I want to make public. I often do this from my iPad because that gives me a better take on what people will see than making the judgment on my large, ultrahigh resolution desktop monitor.

I can get to the same place without Auto-Uploadr but it is going to take more work. If they're going to make me pay $35-$50 for the tool they've motivated me to look for another service.

I use Flickr and for the most part enjoy it but I do not subscribe to the Pro version as It provides me no extra benefits. I have no reason to pay for a title that says I'm a "Pro", have access to how many people have viewed my photos or use Auto-Uploadr. The free version works just fine for what it is.

Upon pulling Photoforge from the AppStore Flickr became more trouble than they are worth.
They seem to have a strategy based on alienating users.

Who cares anymore? I was charged the then $25.00 for a Pro account without asking for one when this was first proposed by Flickr. I canceled when it was time to renew. To be honest, I seldom go to Flickr anymore because of the time it takes to upload and sort photos. Also, it seems every time I do go into Flickr something has changed and I have to learn the new "system." Don't get me started on putting albums into collections. I do enjoy the group discussions as knowing who one is talking to keeps the trolls and naysayers and fanboys away.

We slowly get aligned to the fact that the digital economy is subject to the same laws are the real economy: if there is no profit to be made you are out.

I think it is a healthy step. If we want to be able to have thriving photography communities in the first place, we need to contribute to their survival. Not that you have to join Flickr, but as a general rule.

Flickr is soooooo slow.
